And this is part of the magic of owning a fine writing instrument!

I can write kind of "fancy" when I take my time. I remember being in a shop not long ago and I decided to sign the cc receipt using my Pelikan 400 Tortoise with a left oblique nib in what I call my "vicious script" (almost like what is in the photo in my sig). I signed it an pushed it toward the clerk and he picked it up and just stood there looking at it and said "wow" He was a young man about 28 or so and you could tell he hadn't ever seen any writing like that. I found it pleasing that someone so young could be impressed by something as simple as a signature on a credit card receipt.

My point is that there was a time when literate people took great pride in their penmanship. That may be a characteristic that has been long been put away in this Bic generation. I can remember when Penmanship was a subject taught in Elementary school and you were actually graded on it on your report card.

The vellum Indentures that I use in a lot of my pen photos are all hand written around the turn of the 20th century. No one can imagine taking all that time to write something anymore. When is the last time your received a long handwritten letter?

I think that is one of the main reasons I appreciate fountain pens, ephemera, journals, diaries, and such. It takes me back to a time when charm and grace were valuable.

What does 'snorkel' mean in pen terminology?

A snorkel is a tube that is extended from under the nib of the pen and is used to draw up the ink into the pen's reservoir. This is so that you don't have to submerge the nib / feed / section into the ink and is thus less messy.

WoWzers! That is extremely impressive, I am in total awe over that writing style! Truly an art and something that I would love to perfect over time. I guess I need to get myself a quality instrument first and begin practicing every day.

Penmanship is definitely a forgotten art in this digital age.

Wow, that is nice, my wife has beautiful handwriting, looks like calligraphy , I will have to have her write something and post it. Now me, I could have a thousand dollar pen and it still looks like chicken scratches...

Fine penmanship is a discipline and bordering on a science.
