I got this new Lamy Sarari and the nib just doesn't seem to be anywhere as smooth as the nib in the test pen that I tried. Both nibs were the same width (1.9mm). Mine straight up felt very scratchy and didn't seem as juicy in laying down the ink :banghead:

So I took the pen back to the shop today, and the attendant tried the pen and said it was "O.K.".

He said that the nib will get smoother over time, and that many people sit down and just write the figure '8' to run a new nib in to get it smooth......

Is this all a load of cobblers......???

What would you do and what should I do??

O.K. I'm off to do some figure '8's :banghead:

This sounds correct.

I've had a few pens which were a bit like that to start with but eventually wrote brilliantly.

The nib will eventually adjust itself to suit your writing style.
That is why they say you should NEVER lend anyone your fountain pen as it takes ages for the nib to adjust to your style and to let someone else use it can slightly damage it.

Not sure about the last bit but thats what I heard.

You could also try it with a different ink.(??)

Just keep 'wearing it in' and it will settle down after a few months.

Can't you read the stickys.:read::dummy::chuckle:

And don't say 'Lamy' on TRF.

Steve.

There is a well known trick to smoothing out a nib that a lot of folks over on FPN use including me.

Find a brown paper bag, the sort that over here we get at the mushroom counter in the grocery store or that they package your shopping in at the check out. It has a slightly rough texture.

Load your pen up with ink and write away on the paper figure 8's is a really good idea!

Have a peice of your normal writing paper next to it. keep checking your progress by writing on the normal paper.

It is a really quick way to smooth out a rough nib and works a treat!

I have the 1.5 version of that nib and found it to be similar. The edges are extreme so I also ran those over the paper a few times and it seemed to very slightly smooth them of, my nib is perfect now!
Hope that helps!

Thanks guys for the advices really makes me feel a lot better.
I have a lot of brown cardboard boxes, and I might just put them to some good use, otherwise I'm off to buy some mushrooms :chuckle:

Hey JJ,

'Steelinox' wants to know why you shouldn't say 'Lamy' on TRF.

Anybody?

Would a pix of 'Lamy' help?

I agree. It is not unusual for a pen to "scratch" when new. There are also some good products out there that will help smooth out a rough nib.

Go here and scroll down to the Nib Smoothing Kits. Tryphon is a great place for all kinds of pen supplies. I have purchased a bunch of stuff through them.

I got some advice from Chris, a good suggestion is to do figure '8's on the bottom of a glass bottle. It works pretty good

Ooooh! Be careful with sand paper of any grit and if you do decide to try it please begin with about 3000 grit. They use this to polish the resin barrels of FP's and so it can't hurt your nib. You can always go more course if you need to.

Shore 'nuff! It can be readily found via Google.

Micro mesh will go up to 6000 grit.

No mate, it's real. They use them as 'sniffer dogs' at Auckland Airport.:agree::agree::chuckle:
