View Full Version : Philly GTG for 2010

Hi Everybody,
Hope you had a great holiday season. Last year we got together on April 4th and that general timeframe seemed to work well for almost everyone. This year I'm thinking about Sat., April 3rd or the following Sat., April 10th for our GTG. (I also want to alert you to the fact that April 4th is Easter Sunday for those of you who celebrate. I didn't know if that would be a deterrent.) I like Jim's idea of meeting in Center City but what's your thinking about this? It might seem far off, but it's 90 days away. Please vote for which date will work better with your schedule, and let's get some ideas out there for restaurants.

I am aware of that GTG and actually posted on that thread. Philly GTG is independent of that one, but no doubt there will be some who attend both. For example, Dan came to our Philly GTG last year and will hopefully attend again this year in addition to coordinatiing the York one.

I got a feeling there will be alot of "no shows" if we do this on Easter weekend.
I'm for the 10th in Center City, perhaps "Chinatown", I'm feeling some Dim Sum, spiced chicken corn soup and Peking Duck, then maybe a trek down to Jewelers Row. However, I know that isn't going to go over too good with some people because of the parking and eating Chinese, so I'm open.
BTW Herm and Dan, I got a good tale of woe for you from this New Years Eve weekend, I concerns an acquaintence from the Mid-West and a stalker. You'll get a kick out of it.
Also, "Abernathy", After seeing some of your most recent threads, I've come to the conclusion that you are in need of a new appropriate user log-on. I'll let you know of this new suggested name at the GTG.

Hmmm...please send a PM, my interest is awakened. I'm planning a lot of stuff in April, and planning for June for the NAWCC National/TRF York GTG starts in earnest very soon. I'm amenable to any date you guys pick, and downtown Philly is fine. Two great restaurants, not on 'Jewelers' Row' but not too far is: Cuba Libre(best Mohitos in Da Woild) and Fork.
But, really, you guys plan it, and I'll try and be there.
Happy New Year!!:cheers::chuckle::thumbsup:

My recommendation for a restaurant is "The White Dog Cafe" located in restaurant row in University City. Someone last year raised the issue of difficulty parking in this vicinity, but let me reassure you there is no difficulty on a Saturday. I am very fond of this place because the food is eclectic and very good. It has a wonderful ambience and exudes warmth, in a word, it's just charming.

A group of TRFers meet for lunch and to look at, big surprise, Rolexes. We are likely to meet on April 10th in Center City, but have not yet decided where to have lunch. You are most welcome to join us. Just post on this thread within the first few days of April letting us know whether you'll attend so we can put in a reservation for you in the restaurant.

Hi Nelson,
It appears that Sat., April 10th will be the date we meet, but as of this entry, no restaurant has been chosen. I invited a number of members, but if this year is similar to last, some people won't know about their availability until we get closer to that date. I hope you can join us, the more the merrier. OK Gal and Guys, were getting close to the date and here we are again making Faith do all the work. Its been 5 years since I roamed the streets of Center City Phila. and I'm forgetting half the places I used to haunt that can accomodate us at lunch time without shoving us out the door in 30 minutes. So here is an idea. How about a diner. Plenty of parking, usually have large tables or seperate rooms to accomodate us, menus with every thing in the world for any ones taste and normally couldn't care less how long we stay.
A few I can think of in differant locations are:
1. South Street Diner - South St.
2. Oregon Diner - South Phila.
3. Country Club Diner - Roosevelt Blvd.
4. Country Squire Diner - Western Delaware County
5. Villanova Diner - Villanova
6. King of Prussia Diner - KOP
Just a thought, I'm still ok with a Center City place if we can come up with one.

Hey Jim,
If you don't mind, I'd like to add one more diner to your rather inclusive list -EVERYBODY WHO KNOWS GOES TO MELROSE!

Faith, I think that slogan should be - EVERYBODY WHO KNOWS, DOESN'T GO TO MELROSE!
The last time I went there was 20 years ago to have a "it just isn't working out" conversation. They pack you in like sardines at tables with a 3" high divider across the center of the table so strangers can sit 2' across from you, hearing every little whisper you say! An older woman sitting across from me was giving me the look of complete disgust while I was having his conversation. I swore I'd never go back there!

If we opt for a diner, my vote is for the South Street Diner. My friend and I ran the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Run a few years ago then enjoyed a wonderful breakfast there. It's practically a Philly institution.
diversified
13 March 2010, 01:41 PM
I'm ok with South Street, but I used to have an office at Head House Square around the corner and I used to eat breakfast they 1 or 2 times a week and I don't remember it being that big, so I made a phone call. They don't have any big tables or seperate rooms, but I was told that if a call was made the day before, they could probaly put us in a group gathering of seperate tables. Something to think about.
BTW Faith, that Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Run is a pretty good thing. I just found out somebody who was rather dear to me at one time died of breast cancer back in Feb., so keep on running "Sh....as"!

I'll throw 1 more out there. The Rose Tree Inn, outside of Media, a couple blocks from my office is a top notch restaurant with the best food in suburban Philly.
http://www.rosetreeinn.net/
Draw backs:
1. a little pricey, and I know some people last year didn't want anything too pricey.
2. kind of far from any thing "Rolex" - closest KOP, 30 minutes away.
But , I used to eat lunch there once a week and dinner 1 or 2 times a month there and I know for a fact, Patty and Robert can make cardboard taste good. Robert is an Austrian chef.

Oh yes, been there a few times now! I wish I could get away but work and a filming schedule is keeping me here for the next wee while!
I spent the millenium driving from Canada to California with an old Girlfriend. We spent the millenmium night in a campground just outside of a place called whiskeytown, then spent the next few days driving back up 101 through Oregon, what a trip!
My favorite though is Manhattan! I would love to live their one day. Spent many happy times in New York, love the place. In fact I think you have one of the most diverse countries in the world, you've got everything:thumbsup:

Or somewhere around Shuler's Jewelers (Rolex AD) in East Norriton. I know the owner there and it's not far from the Plymouth Meeting exit of the Blue Route. There is a diner close by that has a semi-private room that should be able to accomodate a large party.

The more I think about the restaurants I used to frequent in my Philly days, the more that come to mind. This one, "Harrys", on Naamans Creek Rd. in the Brandywine area of Delaware is most likely the best restaurant in the tri-state area. I have eaten there literally hundreds of times and have never had a bad time or a bad eating experience. While a bit far, it is also close to tax free shopping ADs if anyone is looking to buy. If anyone is familiar with the Brandywine Country Club, this is right around the corner.

I personnally think both the Rose Tree Inn and Harrys are the best suburban restaurants in the Philly area. Neither one is a dissapointment.

03/16/2010 - I just got off the phone with Robert and he told me he is revamping the menu 04/01/2010, however he said "NOT TO WORRY", it will still be the same types of things I typically stuff my face with!
