The most beautifull chronograph EVER made !!! ;)

Manually wound movement with 30 minute elapsed time chronograph and small second hand.
Water resistant to 25m.
Fold-over clasp.
Sapphire crystal case back.
Pink Gold case 42 mm
Caliber CH 27-70
Thickness 5.57 [mm]
Movement diameter 27.50 [mm]
Case diameter 42.00 [mm]
Number of jewels 24
Power reserve min 50 max 60 hours
Balance type Gyromax
Vibrations / hour 18000 [Hz]
Distinctive sign Geneva Seal

This movement CH 27-70 can be found in 3 Patek references
the 5070 - chrono
the 5970 - chrono quantième perpétuel
the 5004 - chrono split-second quantième perpétuel

This is by far the most beautifull chrono mouvement Patek offers.
Their inhouse chrono which you can find in the 5980 and 5960 is great but not not as nice as the CH 27-70

It's personal taste ofcourse but imo this watch is 100% perfect.
It looks great and feels great.
The size of the case is perfect (not too small and not too big) The combination of the silver-grey dial and the red gold case is wonderfull.

If there is one watch in the world who will make you forget all the other watches it must be this one

Of course, the displayed patek chronograph is beautiful. first, i'm not a great fans of chronographs. but let's talk calatreva, with a sweep hand(i think last year was last time they will manufacture the calatreva with a sweep hand....for the privilege of that sweep hand, costs about $16,000.00, as opposed to the calatreva without which(was) about $12,000 or $14,000.00)...so, let's ask this question? if you want a repair on a patek where do you go? who repairs em outside switzerland? how do they stand up to shock, water, temperature variations? i guess some of their movements are curved which is a real feat, and makes them instant collectables....but some of the watches in the $70K range are just downright ugly. so yeah, i'd like a calatreva with a sweep hand, but all in all, i prefer rolex because they do withstand a beating, hold their value, are readily repaired, and they do withstand all kinds of temperature variations and water exposures....so give me rolex.:smokin:

It's a beautiful movement, but it has a major drawback - it's manual wind. I'm extremely lazy. I hate having to wind watches on a regular basis. My one manual wind (18K G Corum dress watch) sits in the drawer.

Wow!!!!! That is a spectacular watch!!!!! That dial is absolutely superb. And although there's a lot of gold, I think it is toned down by the leather strap.

If I sold my house, I could be wearing this and I wouldn't have to be worrying about a new roof, mowing the lawn, or any of the other "joys" of home ownership.

But in all honesty, I'm not a big chronograph fan as I have nothing to time but steaks on the grill. For my money, the PP Caltrava , the Ellipse d'Or, or the Nautilus would be better choices.

That said, I have to agree that the watch pictured is stunningly beautiful. Thanks for posting those pics.

Absolutely beautiful, and if I could have several watches of it's type, maybe, but:

manual wind?????

watchloverdave
18 September 2007, 10:20 AM
I have several manual wind watches and don't see winding as a problem at all. I'm an older guy and grew up with the daily ritual of winding your watch in the morning before breakfast; so, winding seems absolutely normal to me. In fact, I think manual winding creates a more personal connection between the wearer and his/her watch.

I'm not crazy about the partial obliteration of primary hour numbers [see also IWC] nor the 'sharpness' of case edges. To me it is aestheticly confused, with a traditional feeling dial, IMHO too busy, set in modernist angular case with too many planes. If it were food to me it would be too rich..... :thumbsdow

Lot of PP haters on this forum. "It's nice, but impractical for mowing the lawn...."

This is a beautiful watch. Handcrafted, beautifully finished movement in limited production...basically as good as it gets in the horological world. And no--it's not as rugged as a Rolex. It's not meant to be.

Bravo on your acquisition. Don't mow the lawn with it. But do smile like a damn fool every time you put it on your wrist. I only wish I was confident enough in my bottom line to drop the money for a PP. Someday....

The watch is pretty. But to me, the dial looks a bit too busy to my liking. The minute hand is curved down a bit like GS. The recent GS Spring Drive range is better I think. PP is absolutely the sought after watch as the whole but the GS is good value for money. One more thing, only 24 jewels in the watch of 50k pounds. I am not sure how reliable the movement is but paying that sort of money I expect a bit more than 24 jewels. Is it as tough as the GS chronograph?

johnswatch
9 January 2010, 05:29 PM
Wow, this is the funniest thread I've read in ages.

Rolex owners slating a watch collector for spending too much on a watch. 'If I had that sort of money' etc etc.

Take a deep breath and perhaps visit some of the other watch forums where you'll read posters saying that to spend that much on a Rolex you must be either A.) Mentally impaired or B.) Unbelievably wealthy or C.) Both.

You can't justify Rolex prices by talking about quality, neither can you justify Patek prices by the same measure.

Is the Patek as robust as a Seiko chrono? Probably. Why wouldn't it be?

Anyway, the Patek chrono is probably the nicest watch I've ever seen. It is a piece of beautiful artful design. It is in this capacity it needs to be considered - as art not purely timepiece.

Congratulations on your purchase it is truly stunning.

May I respectfully suggest that you do some further research on the Patek Philippe brand?

If you do you will see that the 5070 was fitted with one on the most robust and beautiful movements in a chronograph ever created.
It was not an in house movement but was made by the famous "Lemania" brand.

The number of jewels fitted to a movement does not mean that it is a better or more complicated one.
In this day and age when manufacture's are working with silicon to help extend the wear and tear on a movement, you will find very few jewels.
In fact now a days a jewel may only be there to make the movemment more photogenic!!

The movement that is fitted to a Spring Drive is quite nice, but it can in NO way compare to the finish of movements that crafted to the degree that a Patek is.

This is just my humble opinion.

Thanks for your posting. I agree the PP is one of the most sought after brands in the world. It is really dependent on what you look for. The PP movement at the back is really stunning, I agree. Most believe that Swiss watches are the "gods" of watches. PP is smart in a way that they hand built very limited editions of their ranges. The limitedness plus the myth of Swiss watches thus making PP the most sought after. Quality, theoretically, it "must" be there if you pay that much of money. But???? Is it always the case? However you cannot really cross out the GS. Just a thought. Cheers.

Not true. My Breguet ref 3237 uses the same base movement, and now of course Lemania doesn't exist except as part of Breguet. Patek did make many changes to the Lemania movement, not the least was changing the balance wheel and hairspring.

Pictures dont do it justice really...

I've been thinking for a long time what would be the ideal reference to get as my first Patek watch...
I'm a great fan of Vintage Rolex's and AP's but really wanted to a get a nice Patek... and with so many choices it was confusing...

I wanted a watch that was not too classic looking and the new 5936 WG & 5205 (grey dial) seemed the favourite contenders. I was also considering the 5712 WG and the 5960P though a lot more expensive.

But after much thought, I decided in the end to go with the 5070 WG!

I thought if Im getting a Patek, I would like it to hold its value and I thought the 5070 would be a good choice. I also like the large case size of this watch and its design can go great with suits or semi casual attire.

Since its been discontinued for some time i needed to find a pre-owned one but wanted a sealed new piece. So I flew down on the weekend to the Parma Fair in Italy and found one gorgeous new piece!! And am really happy with my ultimate choice... hope you like the pics!

Beautiful watch, but personally I'd prefer the quantieme complication. Folks who can afford this watch really don't need a chrono. If they need to time something (polo match, yacht race), they can just tell a servant to do it. :)

I just saw the price of the new 5170 ( successor of the 5070)

almost 60.000 euro ???
60.000 WTF, I think a 5070 was only 40.000 (maybe 'only' is not the correct word when we're talking about 40K LOL)

My Grail right their. Stunning.

I never understood a manual wind until I bought my Speedmaster pro.
if I had the cash, I'd buy that any day of the week. Thanks for sharing.

That watch is simply incredible! Who thought a loaded dial chronograph could look so fancy? I love those pushers as well.
