And tell WHY you think it is real or fake

Is this a test for us Bo or is it you having a laugh?

SPACE-DWELLER

OK guys. It's real.

I just thought it would be interesting to see what would come up.

I mean: The "Real or not" threads here on TRF have mostly presented a FAKE Rolex and the question "is this watch real or not" kind of gave it away on its own.

Now: Some of the fakes are SO good that you really have to look for the tiniest details to decide what is what.

This is very worrying since - at the end of the day - wearers of GENUINE Rolex watches soon will be considered wearing FAKES, since the fakes are getting better and better. Of course, the wearer does not have to mind that, but still it pisses me off.

Here you have the original watch and the fake version of it:

GENUINE:
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t245/Wiseled/rolly1.jpg

FAKE:
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t245/Wiseled/rolly2.jpg

Quite a good fake! IMHO, what tells it is a fake is merely the too large rectangular hour markers at 6 and 9 and the slightly too thick "white gold" dial figures.

Again: The "bluish" shine on the bezel on the copy is a trick of the light. You also see it on the genuine SD (pic 1).

Also the dial script dosn't line up exactly as the authentic Rolex.

If, however you only had these two watches to compare for authenticity the back would have to come of to be sure.

Well....I don't think that they are "way" too pronounced, but you are right: The hours markers are probably the best tell-tale sign of this specific copy.

What surprised me very much: The crown guards on that fake! Normally - for some odd reason - copiers simply do not seem to get the crown guards right. But on the specific specimen?? Apart from just a slightly heftier look quite close to the genuine Rolex crown guards, I'd say  (oops, I meant: :thumbsdow ).

Also: The luminous marker in the bezel at 12: quite well made.

I have seen very good Sub fakes in HK and even bought one myself.

The most tell tale sign is the winding. Real Sub winds with discrete clicks, not the fakes.

Also the lume on the bezel and on the indices fell off after 3 months of everyday wear. Zzzz

So how does the fake SD look with the maxi dial?

SPACE-DWELLER
8 June 2007, 06:35 AM
Hi Bo,

So how does the fake SD look with the maxi dial?

Well, in fact it hasn't got the maxi dial. What is "maxi" about it is that the "gold" rims of the hour markers are too thick.

The fakes are getting worryingly similar to the original.

The good thing for now is that the fakes fall apart after a couple of months and the originals outlast the wearer, though just a couple of dollars extra invested at the chinese factory would bring about that all important extra quality and then there's going to be trouble.

One reason I've gone the gold route is that the fake attempts at these just do not hold any credability.

Well Paul....agreed about the terrific similarity of the fakes, but cannot agree about them falling apart that easily.

The really good fakes (which are being palmed off as the real McCoys), are in fact made from good steel and use genuine ETA movements. In fact, they are so damned good that people wear them for years and years.....and only find out that they are fakes when they take them into an RSC for service.

Even then, the lady at the counter will open up a job-card, accept the watch (because it looks so damn real) and let you go. It's only when the watch actually reaches the watchmaker's table a couple of days later, and the watchmaker opens up the case back that the beans are spilt all over the floor!! :banghead: :banghead:

IMHO I d rather wear a timex that I could afford than have anything fake on my wrist.

I dont understand why someone would buy a fake anything?

They themselves know its not real and they are only fooling themselves.

Happens with car insigna's.

I was in my new Porsche Turbo and someone in an E55 (mercedes AMG) pulled up to me on I-95 and started reving his engine,, I downshifted, and let it go and it was no contest. Come to find out the driver bought the E55 AMG designation and stuck it on where it would say E500,,, WHY? It was still a 302 hp E500 and not the 469 hp AMG.

But I did call his bluff and went head to head,,,, I realized after a few seconds something was wrong because the E55 would normally give me a good run on the highway from 70 mph to 130mph. THis car had no balls.

I didnt check his wrist BUT I imagine he would be the type to have the fake watch.

I was always happy growing up wearing and driving what I could afford knowing someday I would have some nice toys BUT why fool yourself. Work hard, save, invest wisely and when the time comes,,, treat yourself well.

Don

ps. I am off to Europe with the wife today for a month.

happy thanksgiving to all...

Bo, another anomaly on the fake is the 4 in 40 on the bezel insert. Really noticeable when it's compared to the authentic watch. Counterfeiters usually can't get it right.

Can you post comparative photos of the helium release valves? I heard that is another easy way to spot a fake sea dweller. The real one uses a different metal (titanium?) that is darker than the rest of the SS casing. From what I hear the fakes are still using SS so there is no difference in color.

The fake SD's I have seen are now using a darker metal for the HEV. I doubt that they go to the expense of using titanium. Up until now, the fake SD's I have seen all failed miserably at recreating the engraving on the back. Some pitiful examples even misspelled "Helium Escape Valve" to read "Heliom EsOape VOlve" or similar gaffs. I guess the Chinese CNC operator didnt know english to well:banghead:

However, they are now even getting the engraving right.

I'm just trying to make sure I understand. Are you talking about the 4 angles on the interior of the 4 b/c there seems to be some variation of the real ones. Some have 4 and some have 3. Mine actually looks more like the fake one in this regard and has 3 angles on the interior of the 4.

And yes mine is real in case anyone was wondering. :chuckle:

I love my Dyna and everytime I thing about getting a Street Glide, I take mine for a ride and that quickly changes my mind. The riding season isn't long enough for two bikes here. Plus with the Dyna being a rubber mount, it's comfortableenough for 250-300 mile jaunts a day and fun enough to go out and drag the pegs and wheelie while the boys go out and play too

Hey Mailman - I assume the Grey Poupon bike comment is in reference to the price tag for the FXSTDSE. I have to agree that the MSRP was nuts. Lucky for me I bought it off a guy who bought it new in Sturgis, put 900 miles on it and then had to sell it to raise money to open another restaraunt. I saved $10k buying it used - maybe my best bargin ever.

As for Aspen Valley HD, no we're in the Denver metro area.
