Hi guys,
Thought I'd try and throw in a brief review of my new WHITE dial Exp-II.
I'll start with the....
DIAL - Having had a bad experience with my previous white dial one about 3 years ago, I spent like 5 long minutes at my AD scrutinizing the watch very carefully under a powerful watchmaker's loupe.:chuckle:
PERFECT!! As WHITE as the driven snow with perfect printing and markers symmetrically spaced. Excellent and very easy to read dial printing of the usual words.
Hands nicely painted over in black to contrast clearly against the white background. RED 24-hour hand has the RED paint going all the way down to the arrowhead. RED hand to be always read off the BEZEL - never the dial!! All hands perfectly synchronised to my satisfaction!!
CASE - Solid Oyster case with crown guards just high enough to engulf the TWINLOCK crown....which more than adequately serves its purpose for what this watch was intended.
BRACELET - OYSTERLOCK with 13 original links. I can never figure out why Rolex supplies the watch with a 7+6 configuration of the watch bracelet. If you try and wear it that way, you will find the clasp going toward one side of the wrist. So the best thing to do is have your AD change it over to an 8+5 arrangement. In any event, have no more than 5 links on the 6 o'clock side even if you have a smaller wrist and have to take one off.
Very comfortable bracelet on the wrist once it has been resized properly.
MOVEMENT - Time proven 3185 movement which enables the user to move the small hour hand independently - an important convenience when travelling from one time zone to another.
31 jewels and a hi-beat 28,800 A/Hr (8 bps) gives this watch its characteristic fast ticka, ticka, tick!! :chuckle:
COMFORT - Very, very comfortable on the wrist. At an actual diameter of 39 mm, this is one of the slimmest Rollies in their line-up. So it sits well on the wrist and is good for small wrists too. Being slim, it slips in easily under the shirt cuffs....so can be worn as a dress watch too.
READABILITY - Superb!! The WG painted over black hands contrast so well with the Snow White dial that time reading is instantaneous!! No problems in that department. Even the cyclops is perfectly centralised over the date window. Dates are in BLACK on a WHITE background, making date readabilty instantaneous too.
PRICE - Listed at US$ 5,000...the watch is quite freely available and good discounts are possible with this model. If you plan on buying it, then buy it as a keeper. Resale on this baby is not as good as the Subs or SS Daytonas.
To summarise - The Exp-II is a superbly practical watch. If you are not a "bezel-fiddler"....even better.:chuckle: I love the brushed finished bezel, gently sloping away from the sapphire crystal.
If you are looking for a dual timezone watch, this would be a great choice. While the GMT-II is quite the stunner too, the SNOW WHITE dial of the Exp-II gives me an adrenalin rush like no other WHITE DIAL watch!! :read:
So, guys, if it's a WHITE dial SPORTS Rolex you're looking for, you might want to consider the Exp-II as an option.
The other options are rather high priced (like the white SS Daytona or the TT White YM!!).
Thanks for reading.
Cheers - JJ
Easy to read dial....great lume too!!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/SD008-1.jpg
Crown guards not too bulbous or obvious....and yet serve their purpose of protecting the crown!!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/SD010-1.jpg
Stunning, brushed-finished, sloping bezel....
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/SD107.jpg
Solid OYSTERLOCK bracelet....more than adequately strong enough for the purpose it was intended for!!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/SD041.jpg
Cyclops - perfectly positioned over the DATE window....for easy DATE readability...
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/SD031.jpg
RED 24-hour hand nicely contrasted against the white background and different from the other 3 hands - so no confusion in time reading...
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/SD021.jpg
No lug-hole case sides...
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/SD108.jpg
Very, very comfy on the wrist!!

Just go for it, guys!!

Agree with the above. Only thing I found is that compared to the Black dial version, the lum is harder to see in low light conditions, and the slim minute hand is hard to see at times. Love the case adn bezel design though and the way it fits. Very nice. If, I could change one thing, it would be to put a Maxi dial on it like the new GMTs.
The Exp II is a very classy yet sporty watch at the same time.

Always thought the Explorer II was a bit of a naff watch, nothing special. But I've just spent an evening with an old Mate with a plat YM. Now WTF has a YM got to do with a white faced ExPII??
Nothing except
I thought the Ym was a naff watch too until I'd met one in the flesh. Sweet as.. Monday I'm off to my AD to try on an ExpII.
JJ great review but nothing beats the real thing, got to try it on and see if she smiles back. And I tell you what, the plat YM smiled and sang sweet songs. Soooooo.....
Can't wait to see and hear what the ExpII does on Monday.

Yes, Clive, considerable difference between the two watches....and in price too!! :chuckle:
Try on the Exp-II and see how you feel about the fit. In all fairness to the YM, I've owned that one too at one stage and it too is a very comfortable watch on the wrist, albeit a tad heavier.
Good luck in your final decision and do keep us updated.

The white dial with the black numbers on the bezel make the white faced exp II a stunner.
I went to an AD wanting to buy a Plat/SS YM, saw the White Exp II in person for the first time, and was struck by its looks. I decided I better hold off buying the YM until I was sure which I really wanted.
I spent the next week thinking about that EXP II.
When I returned to buy the EXP II it was gone and so I had to wait a few months for another to come in. The black dialed EXP II they had was not singing to me. And the YM I once thought I had to have, well it now looked just "so-so."
I will never part with my EXP II. I have bought many watches since then, but have never felt about any of them the way I felt when I first saw the EXP II white dial in person.

This is a great review. Actually, it is the perfect review for me to be reading since I am considering this watch (and am relentless about these "small" details before making such a purchase).
That being said, I do have a couple of questions.
You mention that you've had problems in the past with a white dial - is this related to a Rolex?
When you refer to the Explorer as a "slim watch", are you referring to the height of the watch as it sits on the wrist?
When comparing the Explorer's stainless bezel to the black bezel of the Submariner, I'm wondering about durability. The brushed stainless of the Explorer can easily be refinished after a nick or scratch. Can this be said of the Submariner bezel, and if not - perhaps this translates into the Explorer being able to keep its newness longer?
Thanks for the review!

Thanks for your comments and kind words, Carolina.
My experience with a similar watch (and white dial) in the past was....after I had just purchased it from my AD, I went home and noticed a rather poor quality control bit from Rolex - a huge gash running through the black coronet on the dial.
Of course, I took it right back and had the dial replaced....but all that took almost a month and pissed me off real bad!!
The slimness of the Exp-II relates with the height of the watch - the slimmest of all the sports Rolex models out there.
As for the brushed finished bezel, yes I guess it can be buffed out. In the case of the Sub, if you damage the insert, the insert can be fully replaced.
If your hubby has no need for a rotating bezel, the Exp-II would be ideally suited for him.
Good luck in your final decision.
Cheers - JJ
PS: The good news is that the Exp-II can also be had at good discounts as it does not sell as fast as the other sports models.

Nice review, JJ... I was especially interested in your suggestion on sizing the bracelet. I took my Exp II to my local small town jeweler when it came. I have knnow the repairman at this shop for several years now and think he is very skilled. Anyway, when I took him my Exp II he said it was very important to have the clasp flat on the back of my wrist and to do that he suggested the 5 link arrangement you suggested! He sized me to have 5 links on the 6 o'clock side and 7 on the twelve o'clock side. My Exp II fits my wrist perfectly and, as you say, is a very comfortable watch to wear. Thanks again for you review! Cheers, Bill P.

Thanks, Bill....yes, with the Oysterlock bracelet, one should have a maximum of only FIVE links on the '6' side - no more. The remainder of the links can go on the '12' side for a good fit.

I'm tempted to trade my 03 GMT-II for the Expy II, I really really like the white face. Been thinking about it everyday since I saw this thread JJ... sigh. :) :) :)

Did the Expy II ever come with lug holes for the bracelet?

Yes, it did....here's a pic of Jocke's Exp-II on Jubilee. You can clearly see the lug holes on the sides.

Wow JJ! Thats the first time I have ever seen an Explorer II with a Jubilee bracelet. I actually like a lot but still prefer the classic Oyster bracelet. That jubilee does make an already fairly dressy watch even more dressier though. I can see it used for formal occasions.
I always wanted to try putting a SS Daytona bracelet on my Explorer II since it has the solid center links and improved clasp but it cannot be done in the US. Oh well...Ill try going to the UK someday to do it. Ill have myself a "Frankenstein watch!"
By the way, excellent review on the Expy JJ. Very thorough, detailed and well-written! BRAVO!!

Remember, that pic of the Exp-II on the Jubilee is NOT mine. Also note that the Exp-II pictured above is the older model WITH the lug holes on the sides.
It could be a problem getting the Jubilee onto the newer models WITHOUT the lug-holes.
I think I just might stick with the original Oysterlock bracelet that has come with my Expy.....and maybe some day muster up the courage to pick up a beautiful SS/WG bezel DJ on the newer Jubilee bracelet with all solid links and concealed clasp.

To answer your question, it is quite the contrary. The white dial EXPII in my opnion is one of the most readable dials in the Oyster line under ANY lighting conditions. I consider it to be more readable than my GMT I when both are in the same lighting conditions.
I can also see the time from a greater distance on my EXPII. I did an experiment to come up with this result:
I made both watches stand up and face me as I stood all the way across a room. The room is 12 feet by 12 feet.
EXPII: I can still make out orientation of the hands from all the way across the room and can give a pretty good guess at the time.
GMT: I cannot see the orientation of the hands as well. The hands look like they disappear into the dial looking at it from all the way across the room. I could not see the second hand moving AT ALL.
Conclusion: The Explorer II white dial is very readable, even from about 10 feet away in a room with one moderately bright ceiling light.

In normal light - NEVER a problem. The white dial Exp-II is one of the easiest and quickest time readability waches out there.
But when you are sitting in a darkened movie house, it's bloody useless. No matter how hard you try.....even try and bounce the bright light off the screen onto the dial....and you see NOTHING.:thumbsdow
On the other hand, with my TT Blue Sub, it's pretty easy to read the time against the reflecting light from the silver screen.

In all honesty, lume on all Rollies sucks. If you want real lume, get an OMEGA Seamaster or a SEIKO Monster.
I find that Rolex lume shows up best in PITCH darkness. If there is some outside light, then somehow the lume is useless.
All in all, there are much better watches out there for lume....much better than what Rolex offers.

It's a simple yet very beautiful watch. If you are NOT a "bezel fiddler", then this is the perfect watch.
The sloping, brushed finished bezel gives the watch a nice touch and that slightly smaller look - in reality it's only 39 mm as compared with the 40 mm of all other sports models.
You won't regret the purchase - also very, very comfortable on the wrist.

Yes, the Explorers IIs are great models. But you will find the AR coating, the lower cost and the Better Lum on the Omega 2245.5 to be outstanding!
I like them both.
As for the Explorer II, I have currently a Black and White Model and like them both. But if was forced to choose between the two, the Black would be the choice for me. Better lum.

Hello all, I just recently joined the ranks of Explorer II owners, I purchased a pre-owned gently loved black face K serial, (Only gripe is the holes in the outside of the lugs but it gives me something to shoot for in the next watch I guess). It still has the vinyl sticker over the hologram and I weaseled the new style box out of the dealer. I'm already debating in my head what model to get next!!!
JJ, your review of the Explorer II was very informative, and lead to the purchase.

Hello all,
I read somewhere about Chapter Ring on the Explorer II. May I know what is it and is it supposed to be available on the latest series of EXP II?
Another question on bracelet configuration of 7+6 converting to 8+5. Is this something all AD can do to adjust when you purchase?
Thanks.

Many thanks to JJ review, I make the decision in buying a white Exp II M series yesterday for US$4600. The watch c/w chapter ring - Rolex engraved all round and watch serial number but then it does not have the etched logo at 6.
Can anyone enlightened me whether this is an original or original mixed and match watch?

Thanks, but your new Expy would definitely have the laser etching at '6'. It's hard to see against the white background, but if you use a reading lamp and a 10x loupe, you should succeed.

Actually a very good question.

Wasn't the Explorer II designed for cave-dwelling? It's strange that the white dial makes it difficult to read at night! :banghead:

It was made for spelunkers in mind, but the original version (1970's), the "Orange Hand Explorer" only came with a black dial. The early "cream" white dial was introducer in the '80's and is very desirable among collectors. The current white dial is whiter than the "cream".

Hi Guys
I own Omega and I have decided to buy a Rolex. I was going to buy DateJust but not like it once I put it on. The jeweler suggested that I should try Explorer II. I loved it and is very very nice.
My Omega Constellation is Automatic SS White. I am not sure if I should buy Black Dial Explorer or White. I have not actually seen Black Dial Explorer II. I am in Darwin, Australia and they do not have any rolex dealer here :(.
Any comments, if I should go to another white dial but different watch or should I buy Black Dial Explorer II.

Question: Both JJ's and a couple of other posts mentioned that the White Exp II is typically very available and that you can get a good discount at an AD on it - what % have you guys typically been able to get? 10-15%? or even more?

You will not be disappointed when you take Expy home for the first time and strap on it your wrist. I know I wasn't, I'm so happy everyday that I own the Explorer II and its definitely a keeper for me.
About discounts, the typical percent is about 10-15% as you have mentioned. This is a great value in my opinion and you take him a brand new Rolex. The ADs here in the Bay Area usually don't offer discounts on SS models but they can waive the sales tax for you which is around 8%.

Well, I've actually measured it with a Vernier caliper and found it to be 39 mm. I think it's the FIXED bezel that gives it the slightly smaller diameter as compared with the rotatable bezels of the GMTs and SUBs.

Thanks, JJ! I am a new member and am grateful for any info -- especially from seasoned owners like you. Actually, my Explorer II is my first Rolex. I considered an Omega Seamaster GMT White Dial before but held back as I've always wanted the Explorer II White Dial.
I also own Omegas ( a PO Chronometer, 45.5. mm and a Speedmaster), Tags (Carrera Twin Time Automatic and Series 2000 Automatic), a Raymond Weil (which I find a bit too dressy), an Oris (Tonneau Classic), a Buler (Ocean Conqueror), a couple of working Swatches and even a Casio G-Shock Frogman.
Anyway, my obvious favorite is my Explorer II. Glad I held back on the Seamaster GMT -- the wait was worth it!!!
Looking forward to more of your reviews!

Well, after reading this review and seeing one at my local AD I finally bought one. It's my first Rolex and I just love the white face. I think you can really dress up or down this model so it's very versatile. Now, I just need to do the link re-arrangement.
I have seen the Exp II's with the RRR chapter rings/inner bezel markings. They are coming out and your AD can get one for you if you like it. For me, they had one in stock without the markings and were willing to deal on it so it made sense for me not to get an updated one.
Now if they came out with an Exp II with the new 3186 movement that's in the GMT IIc then I would want to upgrade.

Great review! BTW...I own this watch and am curious as to what kind of crown mechanism the EXPII has since there is a solid line under the Rolex symbol on the crown as opposed to the three dots of a triplock or no dots of a twinlock? Is it either of these or something entirely different?
Thanks for your help anyone.

Welcome to the forums kelsod333!
The Explorer II has a twinlock crown. The line under the crown indicates that its a twinlock. They are guaranteed water resistant to a depth of 330 feet or 100 meters. The twinlock is also smaller than the triplock.
On the Submariners, you would see a crown with three dots under the crown and that is indeed the triplock.

I have a question about the position of the Rolex crown on the winding crown (hope that makes sense) on the ExpII. On my Z series EXPII when the crown is fully screwed down the Rolex Crown symbol is pointing up to the 12 o'clock position. That is, if you were looking at the watch from the side the crown symbol would be laying on it's side with the top of the crown points pointing to the right.
I've seen pics of other Rolex's where the crown is upside down when fully screwed it. Does it vary based on model or year or what? Is there a proper position the crown should be in? I got my watch new from an AD in February so it must have come from the factory this way.
I hope my question makes sense. Thanks for your help anybody.

While your question does make sense, it's an age old question. It would be virtually impossible to align two crowns in an identical manner. The threads on the stem have to match up with the threads inside the crown.....and to attain that perfectly each time is well nigh impossible.
So you would have to be very lucky to get a crown perfectly lined up straight.

Thanks JJ for the very quick reply :)
I just noticed on the picture you posted of your EXPYII that your crown seems to point 180 degrees opposite of mine (your's toward 6 O'Clock). Mine does in fact point perfectly to 12 o'clock and I'm glad as you say, that it at least points perfectly in one direction. As anal as I am it would probably drive me nuts if the crown was pointing in some funky direction like at 8 o'clock or something like that. But that's just me.
Thanks again!!

I personally find reading the time to be easier in most lighting conditions on my white dial Explorer II than on my black dial GMT Master 1.
This is because there is more of a contrast of the hands on the white dial (black painted white gold hands on white dial) than there is on the black dial (white gold hands on black dial). More contrast usually gives better readability.

Based on all the pictures I have seen, my own experience, and to my knowledge, the white dial of the Explorer II has not and does not fade to a yellow over time.
There was a small period during the mid-1980s when Rolex intended to produce a white dial Explorer II but due to some fault in the paint that they used, the dial came out to be a creamy/ivory dial instead. These Explorer II's ref. 16550 were known as the "cream dial" Explorer II and were produced in small numbers. They are quite rare, very collectible, and have very high resale value today.
At about 1988, Rolex began production of the Explorer II ref. 16570 which is the model currently seen today. They have been produced with the option of a white dial ever since and all models that I have seen have remained snow white throughout all those years. Absolutely no fading whatsoever.
Here's a link with some information about the cream dial model:

Cant argue against that. I think the Explorer II, and the Explorer line in general, is a good first watch to learn more about what the brand has to offer. A lot of people will associate the Sub with Rolex but the Explorer is a good first watch because it shows the wearer that the brand has much more to offer than just their legendary Sub.
Its also a pretty simple watch in general. No rotating bezel to fiddle around with, classic but simple design, just set the watch and wear it.

A fair price I believe would be 10% off the MSRP with no sales tax. I'm sure you can get that price on the Explorer II.

Hi guys, great chat on here. I have both the Explorer II, black face and the Sub non date. Cant go wrong with either of them. Hard to pick a favourite one as both of them are iconic. The sub is the most popular and rugged of the two but the explorer is less seen so has the 'coolness' about it.

JJ solid report I like it. My AD said the EXP is due for a change over by Rolex. I told her stop making guesses. She said next year at the show look for a change. I bet her $5,000 or a DJ Rolex she is up in the night wrong. She and her manager took the bet. Looks like another Rolex for me in March 2009.

Tks JJ!
Hi everyone,
JJ's absolutely right in suggesting to hold them both side by side and then deciding which you like better. The problem when I bought mine was, I took nearly an hour staring at both ! I eventually chose the white face as I had actually fallen in love with it 10 years prior. I got the EXPII last year for RM15K.
As for white being popular, it depends on which part of the world you're in. I was told by the AD that black is more popular here in Malaysia and generally Asia. At the AD I purchased mine from, the white face was on display whilst the black one was in the vault.

Thanks for the review I have been looking at an Explorer II as a keeper - I am not worried about resale. What is your experience on maintenance costs - I have seen some expensive figures out there and just don't know if they are valid. Also as a keeper I am looking for reputable place to find a pre-owned Explorer II white dial as they seem to not hold their value - but with all the fakes out there I just have no idea where to turn. Or possibly where to find the best deal on a new one. Any guidance would be appreciated on purchasing would be great.

The Exp-II is not so much in demand as the other sports models, so a good discount would be possible.
The only "expensive" maintenance could possibly arise if you scratch the brushed bezel. Unlike the Sub bezel inserts which are relatively cheap to replace, the Exp-II bezel is fixed and will be expensive if you scratch it badly. The scratch, in most cases, cannot be taken off.....so you would have to be careful in that department.
Other than that, it's a terrific watch, very comfortable and feels light on the wrist as it sits nice and flat.

Great thread, thanks much to all posters ...
Got my white faced Explorer II as reward to myself for making CPO in 1994. I was a marine navigator and wanted it for celestial navigation. Since that requires a log of timing rate changes, I know it is time for service when it begins to lose time synchro on a changing, accelerating rate.
good news is, just got my watch back from AD from only my second factory (or any) service in fourteen years.
Service charges were $1,100 US which included a new crystal due to a tiny chip at 10:00 incurred in my first year of ownership knocking it against a water-tight door knife edge, and a new bezel since the black paint had worn out of the 24-hour numbers. I thought the cost of service was quite reasonable projected over the years, my first service was in 1999.
This is my 24/7/365 watch and I felt pretty naked without it on my wrist for six weeks, even though I had a Tudor 79160 chronograph for backup. The Explorer never fails to draw compliments.
Retail today is 2.5x my original purchase price.

Welcome to the forums! The Explorer II does have good lume in terms of brightness, the only issue I have with it is that the lume doesn't stay "charged" as long as I prefer it to. However, the lume does not even take away from the amazing craftsmanship and quality that goes into every Rolex. Enjoy your Explorer II to the fullest.

As AUD has now dropped to a 5 year low, it will be better for you to buy locally. Also, I read a thread in TRF that the Rolex has not increase its current prices in Australia yet.
If you go to http://www.rolex.com/en/index.jsp#/en/xml/inside-rolex/sales-service/find-a-rolex-dealer/index, you will find an AD named J Farren-Price in Adelaide on Rundle Mall.

I am looking at an Explorer II that a friend of a friend has for sale. It does not have the Rolex crown etched at the 6 position. When I pointed out to him, he said that the crystal had chipped and he had an "aftermaket" replacement put on it. How bad does this effect the value? Or does this just scream "FAKE?"

The Explorer II was designed with spelunking (cave exploration) in mind. The bezel is marked for a 24 hour period and the third (red) hand is used when you are in total darkness to determine when it is day or night. If you can't see the sun, how would you know if the 1:00 you were looking at was one in the afternoon or one in the morning? Rolex's solution; just glance over at the red hand and see if it is pointing at the one or if it is pointing at the thirteen.

It was, believe it or not, very helpful when I was in the USMC and stuck on a ship for months on end! I sometimes went weeks without seeing the light of day. Not exactly spelunking, but a practical use of the 24 hour markings on the Exlporer II's bezel.

The main difference in function between the Exp II and GMT II is the latter has a movable bezel that allows the wearer to keep a third time zone.
IMO, the brushed bezel of the Exp II looks cool and durable

The Exp-II bezel too can be a scratch-magnet. Unfortunately, if it gets scratched, it cannot be buffed to the same specs as the original Rolex finish. So it would have to be replaced.......at a cost, of course.
In this respect, the GMT-II and Sub bezel inserts are cheaper and easier to replace if scratched or damaged.

Me and my partners just put a deposit for 4 pieces of the Explorer II !!! Two black and two white colours !!! It is at our local AD here in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Very good service by AD and also price is quite reasonable as we checked around all the other ADs. We were told that we can bring our Rolexes to them to clean every month.....which is a service done by them for Rolex purchasers !!!
We were contemplating taking four different models as the GMT Master II with the green dial and Cerachrom bezel was nice, one of my partners like the Sea Dweller, another like a Datejust......but in the end we all decided on the Explorer IIs !!! Hope we made the right choice !!

It was made for spelunkers in mind, but the original version (1970's), the "Orange Hand Explorer" only came with a black dial. The early "cream" white dial was introducer in the '80's and is very desirable among collectors. The current white dial is whiter than the "cream".
Here's a link to an '80s cream dial 16550 that sold for around £12,000

I never noticed before but just seen that the "10" to "16" numbers are inverted to aid readability on a fixed bezel. I guess the "8" is as well but that looks the same upside-down.
I guess it will be true for all watches that have a fixed bezel then.
You all probably know this already but I was tickled because I realised this all by myself without anyone telling me.

I don't see that happening. The Exp-II is still quite a popular watch in the sports line up and is one tough mother.
It's also one of the most comfortable watches I've had the pleasure of wearing......so, at best, Rolex could come up with some enhancements or modifications, but that too could be a long way off.

I love the Explorer II the way it is and hope that there aren't any dramatic changes to it at all.
The watch would have been perfect for me had it featured a brushed finish Daytona bracelet and clasp as well as a triplock crown introduced to it a long time ago. Add those two innovations in and the Explorer II is the best it can be. :agree:
I'm not really a big fan of a maxi dial, fatter hands, or supercase on the Explorer II.

I was just wondering as march has come and gone did Operator win the bet and if so do you have your new watch/cash?

Here's my new "M series" Explorer II.
I love everything about this watch. It truly is the most comfortable, best looking
most functional watch I have ever owned. I've had it for about two weeks now and I like it more every day.
This one is equipped with the new 3186 movement and is running +3 sec after two weeks!
I may write my own mini review on this one after wearing it for a month or so.

You know ... I own a Expy II and did not know it until I saw your post :banghead:. Talk about embarrassing.....
This could be another uniquely Explorer feature as the rotating bezel models would not be this way.

Spot on mate, GMTs (& others) do not have inverted numbers (example pic - not mine - below). The current Exp II and the GMT IIc bezels use the same number font, albeit bigger on the GMT. A nice touch, I think...

I have owned my Explorer II for 16 years. From time to time I consider buying a different model and in fact purchased a Turn O Graph two tone SS/Rose Gold at the Dubai duty free two years ago while returning to Iraq. It sat in the box for more than a year. I knew that I would not enjoy and most likely would not wear it. Turn O Graph is a nice watch but not suited to my lifestyle. Explorer II is still on my wrist and the Turn O Graph is with a new owner.
Cheers,

Very nice watch Troy. Sitting in the box there, it seems to be saying "ready for action"
A Sub and an Exp II make for the perfect sports pair, in my 'umble opinion.

Me thot of flipping my polar for the iconic sub on many occasions .... Many bros in the forum also opined that they will do that too if they can only keep 1 Rolex.... I've tried to look for deals and managed to find some... but when it comes to the crucial moments, something in me kept telling me that I'm gonna regret it if I flip it :smokin:.... tough decision indeed, but my polar is still on my wrist... mixed feelings here but I'm sure the exp 2 sure mean something to me....

Does anyone know if the parachrom bleu spring is used in the Expy2? If so, what is the serial it is first used?

If you can pick up a late M-series or the latest V-series Exp-II you might get lucky and get it with the 3186 movement.
Not that the Blue Parachrom spring makes much of a difference. Accuracy of this watch with the older, time-proven and very dependable 3185 movement is dead on too.

You can find out by carrying out the very simple "wiggle test".
Just unscrew the crown, then pull it out ONE notch and start to move the small hour hand (the one with the Mercedes symbol on it) in any direction.
If the long, RED 24-hour hand wiggles, then the watch has the older 3185 movement.
No wiggle.....and you've got the new 3186 movement. Then, if you like, you can have your watchmaker open up the caseback and check out the actual calibe number embossed on the movement.

Great JJ. Thanks for that. Can you kindly describe what you mean by the red hand wiggles?
It will have a slight shake to it with the 3185 movement.
No shake if the watch is fitted with the 3186 movement.
To test this, you would need to unscrew the crown, pull it out ONE notch and then move the small hand around the dial.

Dear JJ. I understand. Fortunately, i had a chance (this morning) to test it out at a local shop. I tested it on a Z series which shows the red hands wiggling. The black M22XXXX didn't budge a bit. However, a white M3XXXXX wiggled a fair bit. Strange.... i would have thought a later model would be 3186. Therefore, the serial will not tell..only the wiggle test will show. Thanks.
Will probably get the black Expy2 in a few days.

Hi JJ. This is andrew and i'm new here. I bought my M-series white dial last december and i'm very happy with it. Just want to ask something regarding the bracelet. Is there a chance of adjusting it to 4+6? Now it is 5+5. And is it normal that it is delayed by 3 sec a day every time i compare it to my digital clock? By the way, nice pix and great review! Thanks and hope to hear from you soon. CHEERS!

Hi,
The original Oysterlock bracelet should come with 13 links all up.
ALWAYS have more links on the '12' side and less on the '6' side. The 5+5 arrangement you have will give your clasp a lop-sided fit on your wrist.
Get it down to 6+4 with 6 on the '12' side. Don't know if the last link can be taken off from this bracelet from the '6' side, so you might have to take some help from your AD.
Good luck - JJ
