Hi guys,

Not sure if this one's been done before, but since it is such a popular model, thought I'd give it a quick rundown!!

Let's start with the....

DIAL - By far the best BLUE dial in the whole wide world!! :agree: I have yet to see a BLUE as gorgeous and stunning as this one - no exceptions!! :read: Dial printing is exquisite. I think this watch looks best with the standard dial. The MAXI would just about over-clutter it and ruin its unique look!!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/16613008.jpg

CASE - Special Oyster Case as described in the catalogue, this baby's good for 1000 feet + easy. Lug edges are sharp, but they tend to stay up and away from the wrist, so I've never had a problem. Comfy fit, but not as comfy as the Exp-II.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/16613031.jpg

CROWN - TRIPLOCK crown, perfect grip, smooth wind down and easy to manouveur. Adequately protects the watch against all the elements and more.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/Bluesy.jpg

BRACELET - Massively strong OYSTER FLIPLOCK bracelet. Don't let those hollow links fool you, guys. They are immensely strong and durable. Time proven beyond measure, the OYSTER FLIPLOCK bracelet has withstood the test of time through the ages and comes up trumps!!

SEL links at the top are solid gold, bordering SS links are solid too, but centre 18 K links are hollow - no worries, guys.....tough as nails!!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/16613015-2.jpg

The beautiful SEL...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/16613015-1.jpg

The CLASP - Serves its purpose of firmly securing the bracelet!!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/Chips053.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/Chips035.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/Chips027.jpg

What can I say, guys? I've been enjoying this baby since the last 7 months and never get tired of admiring its beauty!! That dial has just gotta the be the BEST thing about this watch.

If you haven't got one in your collection, go get it!! Even the purchase will be an experience you'll never forget!!

Cheers - JJ

Nice review JJ. How do you keep you watches in such good shape? You were a long glove? :) I wear long sleeve shirt and tie everyday and still manage to scuff my watches up.

Quite stunning! Superior photography as well. Might I inquire as to your camera and setup? And more importantly, do we know if a maxi dial is pending on the TT blue Sub? I agree with you about the current dial.

Thanks, pal. Those were taken with a Panasonic Lumix with the LEICA lens. The one without the Leica lens is no good. It's the lens that makes the difference.

No news about whether the Sub will ever come out with the maxi dial and newer bracelet....but I guess eventually all Rollies will go that way!!

Agreed, Chris....I think the Blue Sub dial looks great with the standard markers. The maxi dial is going to ruin its aesthetics completely and overcrowd the dial!! :thumbsdow

It's perfect. I'd hate to see any changes. Mine was the last model year before the gold running through the bracelet. Kind of prefer it without as it has enough scratches now. Still, I think the most beautiful watch ever.

Same here, always on the look out for possible fender benders, but even then it happens sometimes.
What always gets my goat (see, people can avoid using sheep remarks :smokin: :bartmoon: :justkiddi  ) are the bigger scratches or dents (if any) which you get and do not know when or where you got them.

Hi JJ, slowly working my way around the forum and have only just run across this section and your blue sub review.
I have been looking at these watches lately and they are quite something, that blue against the gold does work well. I have attached a photo of a 2004 model which looks to me to be identical to yours apart from the overall colour, which looks darker. Is it just the photo or are these earlier ones a darker colour, especially the dial. Any other points of comparison worth noting greatly appreciated, thanks mate:cheers:

How does that one of yours compare colour wise to the one in my photo. Did you buy new?

I think Tools has a black dial one of these and that looks equally impressive.......boy, the more I get into this watch game the harder it gets to make a decision. I was all keen on the white dial explorer until I actually saw it in the flesh and tried it on, stunning looking watch, but just too lite for me. so now it's the sub that's got me going, but I still have to physically try one on yet, tomorrow I hope!

Thanks, Phil.

The only notable difference is that your Sub has the lug holes on the side of the case....whereas mine doesn't.

Other than that, hard to tell. The BLUE dial can appear different shades depending on the angle from which the picture has been taken.

Thanks mate, shall certainly be trying one on soon. I did try on an Explorer 2 white dial the other day, and despite being a fabulous looking thing, I just could not handle how much lighter it was than say the subs. The quest goes on

Hi there!

This is my first message on this great website. I really like your informative review JJ.

Last week I traded-in some of my watches I didn't use and put some money on-top and bought one of these beautiful Rolex Submariner blue dial TT watches. I have wanted this watch for a very long time, I would say that this is the best watch I have ever owned and consider myself very lucky.

I am drawn to this watch, as I consider its design to be classic yet contemporary, handsome, the weight, size and thickness of the case are just right, the bracelet is strong and feels great on the wrist, the colour combination is awsome, the curves and lines are crisp, the movement is a workhorse - tool watch, and in my opinion I would say it comes close to perfection for me.

I have attached a few photos of my new Blue Sub.

Hope you all have a great day!

I believe you are referring to the "ROLEXROLEXROLEX..." engraving on the rehaut. I saw one the other day, they already have. It'll probably be a while for all the ones without the engraving to be sold, so finding either style will still be possible.

hi there i've been planning to buy a tt black dial sub for a while because they look really masculine but when i came across a blue dial tt sub at queen victoria building two weeks ago i couldn't resist it i went back to the shop the following day and made a deposit for the watch to put it aside for me as they were putting the price up because of the aussie dollar value coming down against the us dollar.i was lucky the owner of the shop agreed. so i'm gonna collect it next week!!! if you're in sydney you can visit the shop at QVB L.G. Did you buy your models new JJ?

Of the 3 which I currently own, the SS/Pt. YM was purchased brand new from my AD in Dec. 07.

The SS Sub-date was "gifted" to me by a forum member.

The TT Blue Sub I just could not pass up as it was an amazing offer (also from a TRF member whom I met in the first week of Dec. 08 at the local mall) who let me have a one year old watch for an excellent price.

Thanks, Lach.

Well, I do take care of them; but I must give a lot of credit to my AD-cum-RSC here in Auckland who did a cosmetic make-over on the SS Sub as well as the Blue Sub, the latter I picked up only this morning.

Greetings
This is my first post ! I own a GMT II and will soon buy a TT Sub like you have posted. I have been reviewing the 2008 vs 2009 models of the Sub and am trying to decide if I should wait till October 2009 for the newest version.

Any advice ? is it ' worth the wait " ?

Hi Keith,

Welcome to TRF. Is it worth the wait? Tough quesiton. The current Blue Sub has a unique Cobalt shade of Blue which somehow Rolex DO NOT want to replicate in their newer models.

However, the newer TT Blue Sub will have some amazing upgrades like....

- ALL SOLID links, yes, even the centre GOLD ones.

- A new and much better Oyster Glidelock Clasp.

- Much broader lugs on the case (although case diameter remains the same 40 mm)

- And a new maxi dial with larger markers and hands.

- And, of course, a newer and inflated price!!

Your call, my friend.

Best - JJ

definitely a nice watch to invest in. it seems to me that the dial looks darker in person when I hold it in my hand at the store.

My Man JJ,

I also have the blue face and the blue is mesmerizing. The new blue on the white gold sub is uninspiring. I held both yesterday alongside each other. NO comparison. The TT wins hands down. The blue TT is captivating, unique, very colorful, and great to look at all day long. My best purchase ever on a Rolex.

Question: How or what product do you use to get your TT looking like brand new? I need to get mine looking like yours. I am OSD prone, so I need to know how you do it. I await your reply with eager anticipation.

Thanks,

PONY

Thanks for all the fine compliments, Pony......but ever heard of soap, a soft toothbush and good ole' H2O?? :read::rofl::rofl::rofl:

That's all you need to keep any watch looking shiny and new. Just wipe off with a soft towel and then give it a rub off with any soft lint-free optician's cloth.

Hi JJ!

How are you? The Blue Sub is one of my favorite Rolex watches of all times.
I owned this watch several times in my past but because of the “blink” of this watch and nature of my work I gave it to my dog (Luna)…

yes, very nice watch. I bought one back in 1991. The only problem is the stretching of the links and the lock. The watch is loose and the bracelet lock will not lock. The secondary lock keeps the watch from comming off.

Excellent review JJ and superb photographs. Your blue Sub and your photography do you credit. Like you I'm always aware of my LV when I'm wearing it (7 days a week) and take great care not to contact the clasp with the desk. After nearly 2 years of wear it's still mint. One concern I have though, I never wear it when I fly for fear of having to take it off at airport security. The thought of my pride and joy bumping through the scanner in a tray with coins, keys, belt and shoes is not good. I wonder if any one else has the same fears or am I just paranoid? Having said that I've just come back from a trip to the Philippines and wasn't asked to remove my watch at all in Heathrow, Hong kong or Manila. I'm pretty sure my Sub would set off a few bells and alarms in the metal detectors though. Keep up the good work my friend.....Chris

Hey guys...
Love the review JJ!!!
I'm in the market for one of these babies. I love the combination of colours. I'm 28 and i'm getting a lot of mixed comments about this watch. Some say the combination of colours is 'tacky' some say it's really nice. Opinions? What do your mates say? I'm planning to have it as a everyday watch as well. And working in an office everyday i'm scared i will scratch the bracelet with the constant use of the keyboard!

I wish they would do a solid SS sub with THAT blue dial.

I'm just not a gold kinda guy.

I do think that watch is a stunning work of art, and the colors work great together but... it's just not me.

Blue is my favorite color. But the blue on the WG sub... yeah. Just not me either.

I really don't understand why they won't use THIS darker blue without gold.

Anyone know if there are any plans to make such a watch?

What do people think about swapping the TT strap off the Blue Sub and replacing with a SS strap ? Can it be done ? Would it look good ?

Ideas and opinions ?

Nice shots & review JJ. I totally agree with you that the cobalt blue of 16613 models is much appreciated.. But do you think that the black also in the ceramic model looks a little bit pale than in the old models ??

I heard that Rolex engineers cannot produce a ceramic bezel in Red colors for the other models having the PEPSI colors... Can anybody tell that this pale blue & black is due to the ceramic technology used ???

I think that if Rolex cannot control colors in ceramic bezels it's better to go back to the metal bezels.. Which are also very durable, scratch & shock resistant.. I've been using a SS Sub for almost 14 yrs. without any scratch in the bezel ! ... Or may be it's time to Rolex to use other metals as titanium like Hublot does... Do you agree !?

I think the blue dial is only available in all WG so for it to be exclusive from the SS & TT's.

The blue dial is available in the new TT Ceramic Sub as well as the new YG Ceramic Sub (although I believe that the lettering on the WG dial is white, whereas on the TT and all YG Ceramics it is gold).

Some very tempting pics there! Thanks for sharing. IMHO, I always felt the Subdate 'deserves' to be in blusey form. It the most elegant dressy sports watch on the planet. That blue and gold is simply ICONIC Subdate. Cheers,

Hi peeps,

I am torn between the old blue and the new ceramic blue.

There are 2 BNIB available to me....how should I decide which is best...??

Would appreciate all your advice, please. Thanks :)

Pics taken with my iPhone 4 while on way to have the watch resized this morning.

Have to admit it is a VERY well kept watch else I would have gone for the ceramic model instead. This blue is indeed of a nicer hue than the new blue.

The only 2 things I dont like are, one it isnt hefty enough and two, the gold centre links stop short at the clasp but I guess that distinguishes itself as the older generation.

Usually am quite skeptical with buying old watches but I guess previous owner was just as meticulous. Its a rare find for its excellent condition, "SWISS" only dial and un-named ownership, where to find?

So...Just DO IT.

1st time I've seen the 'SWISS' only dial, always 'SWISS MADE'.
I purchased a 16613 and a 116613 in HK new from an AD and both cards were un-named, but that doesn't make the watch more or less, imo. Enjoy your new time piece :thumbsup:
