View Full Version : Okay fellas....the inevitable Pt./YM review!!!

Well, here ya go, guys....my personal feelings on the SS/Pt. YM 16622 model.
What can I say? Let's start with that gorgeous....
DIAL - Made of solid 950 grade Platinum, the dial is simply mesmerising. It has a beautiful shimmer which tells you that you're looking at the noblest of metals on the Periodic Table.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/IMG_0054-1.jpg
The dial is fitted with the maxi markers and hands. Makes for easy readability and the lume is absolutely terrific. Surprisingly, the white hands do not clash against the Pt. dial - hence, camouflage and readability is not a problem. Lume on the watch is excellent!!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/IMG_0133.jpg
Which now brings us to the remainder of the nobility left on this watch....
The BEZEL - All Platinum again - the serrated bezel as well as the insert. Unlike the Sub bezel which is only uni-directional, the YM bezel moves both ways. It has the same markings as any Sub, but would mainly be used for timing a yacht race.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/IMG_0073-2.jpg
The bezel moves quite easily and centres perfectly. The little triangle on top is solid platinum.
Hands and markers - Made up of 18 K white gold, the hands are markers are maxi. The centre second sweep is RED and very attractive with a smooth sweep around the dial. The word YACHT-MASTER is also printed in red and looks terrific against the Platinum background.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/IMG_0125.jpg
The Bracelet - Fitted with the dependable and solid OYSTERLOCK bracelet, this is one helluva comfy watch to wear. Perfectly balanced and weighing in at 146 grams (with all original links), the watch has 8 links on the '12' side and 4½ links on the '6' side.
Clasp centralization is perfect and watch sits beautifully on the wrist. Unlike the other models, the coronet crown is located on the flipover secure clasp.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/IMG_0127.jpg
Note 8 + 4½ links all up!! Also note all SOLID centre links!!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/IMG_0104-1.jpg
And superbly centralized clasp!!!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/IMG_0093.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/IMG_0047.jpg
The Movement - None other than the very dependable, reliable, accurate and time proven 3135 calibre - same as the one in the Sub-dates, SD and the DJs.
Accurate as hell and keeping perfect time from day one!!!
The Crown - TRIPLOCK with all the features of a regular diver's watch. The ONLY reason it gets just a 100 m rating is because the YM cannot be classified as an official diver's watch. Other than that, the TRIPLOCK crown is as good as that of the Sub or the SD.
I hope you've enjoyed reading this review in as much as I've enjoyed typing it out. The Pt. YM is one helluva beautiful looking watch - both, dressy and sporty!!
I would recommend it - in a heartbeat!!
Thanks for reading!!
Cheers - JJ

Nice review JJ. Tried it on last month at local AD and looked much better on my wrist than in display case. This WILL BE my next Rolex!

JJ - your reviews are always well-written and helpful for those of us currently in the market...I hadn't really considered this one, but now I have an errand to run this weekend - if my AD has one in stock that is.
Oh - and really nice pics. You give any tips to SLRDude?:cheers:

Brilliant pics and review JJ!
So does the heavier bezel make it a bit top heavy and does it sort of flop one side to the other?

I could NEVER give tips or photographic lessons to masters like Chip (SLRDude) or Jocke. My camera work doesn't even compare.
