View Full Version : OMEGA Seamaster PLANET OCEAN review

Okay guys,

Here's a watch that may or may not appeal to all. Believe me, the pics don't do it even 25% justice....you really need to see it for real.

Watch: Available in 2 sizes - 42 mm and 45.5 mm. Both are COSC certified and are available with a black or orange bezel. Also available with bracelet, rubber strap or orange leather strap (with orange bezel).

Weight: Massive 222 grams (for the 45.5 mm model) with all links on.

Bracelet: Impressive and very powerful with all solid links: 14½ links all up. The ½ link is very important for final adjustments, but this is where we have a big drawback - the bracelet can only be resized by a jeweller.....too tricky, clumsy and tough to do it yourself unless you've had enough practice and have the right tools. Clasp is thick and very strong. Unfortunately, no holes for fine adjustments.....that's where the ½ link comes in very handy. Beautiful embossing of selected words at the back of the clasp.

Movement: 2500C Co-axial COSC movement, 27 jewels, 25,200 A/Hr. The slightly slower beat rate has given a much higher Power Reserve (I got a phenomenal 51 hours with mine from start to finish) and super-duper accuracy.

Accuracy: On the wrist: spot-on, ZERO deviaiton during an entire normal day's wear.
Crown UP: -0.5 sec./12 hrs.
Crown DOWN: +1 sec./12 hrs.

The caseback is very impressive with its beautiful Seahorse logo and the words PLANET OCEAN embossed in bold print. Very thick watch at 15.05 mm.

All in all, a very satisfying experience and a real eye-catcher. I'd recommend that anyone with a 7"+ wrist go in for the larger 45.5 mm model. Less than 7" would be comfortable with the 42 mm.

NOTE: I've actually placed the 42 mm version next to a 40 mm Sub and the Sub looks bigger. That's because the Rolex bezel overflows the perimeter of the case. With the PO, it's the other way around. The bezel is well within the confines of the case perimeter giving it a smaller appearance.

Some pics....

A look at the Planet Ocean in profile....a rather solid 15.05 mm in thickness....won't exactly fit under a shirt cuff, but then I wouldn't recommend this watch as a dress watch. :chuckle:

Yes JJ. I like it a lot, think the orange bezel and numerals, give it the wow factor. If I
would nitpick, not sure with the double arrow hands, but a great looking watch.

I must commend you, JJ. For you, that's a very restrained set of pics. Well done.

One nit to pick. That's an awefully small date window for such a massive watch. I think it needs a cyclops to look right.

JJ Irani
29 June 2005, 04:32 AM
I know you're kidding, Ed, but seriously that date is very clear. Omega have designed the small window to merge in well with the rest of the dial and a cyclops would just ruin the whole look.

Also remember, I'm near-sighted, so have no problems with the tiniest of script or details.

You're right, JJ.I forgot to add a J/K to my post. :banghead:

Sorry about that. The pics are nice but it's not a watch I would wear. It's the orange color that I'm not really crazy about. But, hey, that's why the man makes 28 flavors.

JJ, I'm in Las Vegas this week and today I did some watch shopping. One of the places I stopped into had a wonderful collection of Omegas, incluing 3 different Orange Monsters, from small to gargantuan. I tried on the 43 mm model and concluded that it is not for me. It's heavier than I like and I confirmed for myself by eyeballing it that the date window is too small (kind of on the order of the SD, which I also don't like). It's also very bulky, somewhat like my GP ww.tc. It definitely did not fit under a shirt cuff.

But I'm glad you enjoy it and I am confident you will wear it proudly until you trade it for the next great watch that you would never think of parting with. ROTFLMAO!!!

JJ Irani
1 July 2005, 06:12 PM
Funny you should say that, Ed, but what really seems to bug Zemina is not so much my buying a new watch, but trading off the one she likes.

Believe me, she wasn't very happy when I knocked off the TT Blue Sub....but was somewhat pacified by the sheer beauty and exquisiteness of this baby...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/JJIrani/YM819.jpg

She also likes my Ommie, so I'm pretty confident now that these two will stay with me....besides, they are both very new watches. The YM is a D-029xxx which means it was manufactured probably in April 05 and the Ommie is very, very new too.

So there you are....hope I've sounded convincing. Yeah, right!! :chuckle: :chuckle:

I just got around to reading this. Well done! I like the large PO alot, but I like the black one the best. I was quite impressed with it, both as a good looking watch and as what looks like would be a very good REAL dive watch.

I've dived with the Bond Seamaster and found it useless as the bezel is almost impossible to rotate when wet. Vis is great, but without being able to mark time, I found it very lacking.

At the time I owned two watches...the SMP and a Tag 2000 quartz. I opted for the Tag as a dive watch for awhile, until I got a Citizen Aqualand Duplex which is a GREAT dive tool!

Anyway, the PO looks to have solved the problems of the SMP and probably improved on readability as well. It's a great choice for divers IMO!
Cheers,
Bruce

9 July 2005, 03:29 PM
You're right, Bruce. SMP bezels were in fact very difficult to turn. This PO bezel is not only easy but has very definite CLICK stops which make it easy to even "Feel" the clicks in the dark.

Large version looked much better to my eye, again. Even that leather wasn't so bad to see live ;)

I almost walked out of the jewler's with a Planet Ocean on my wrist. What changed my mind was when the watch's crown fell off as I was adjusting the time. :OMG: I picked-up a Submariner instead and I'm very happy now.

Would agree, the resale value on Patek's Aquanauts and Nauticas are better than Rolex. At least that is what I saw in Asia.

Also, some of the Panerai models have very good resale value.

The other thing to consider is this as well, many other Swiss Watches, you can buy at 25% to 40% off retail. Where as with Rolex, 10% is about as good as you can get.

But generally overall, Rolex watches will sell easier. This I think has to do with the general public acceptance and knowledge of Rolex being the best in their minds. There are many other watch companies that make far superior watches compared to Rolex, but unless you are a WIS, you will not recognize this - thus a smaller portion of the population as potential buyers.

I wear a Planet Ocean - Super Avenger - and now a GTM-II (among many others) - just thought this shot would be good for everyone to compare.

I find the rolex very small and light - but looks great and is classic, and I don't always want something heavy.

the breitling is HUGE and draws A LOT of attention. So I don't wear it often, but sometimes I am in the mood to.

The 44mm Planet Ocean is the perfect in-between for me. But many of my friends think it's too large/heavy for them.

Believe me, she wasn't very happy when I knocked off the TT Blue Sub....but was somewhat pacified by the sheer beauty and exquisiteness of this baby...

That is one good looking Rolex---even for an Omega fan like me. Is it crazy priced?

Hate to bring this old thread back to life but I love the orange bezel on that PO JJ. Great looking watch and nice review. I am a big fan of Omega.

I was thinking of trading up the 2254 when these came out, but I just can't part with my 2254.

I guess I'll just have to add to the stable...

Thanks, but no thanks.....I'll stick with Rolex ONLY!! :agree:

It is not only possible, but a desperate AD will go as high as 40% on a NOS model which simply refuses to sell.

Hey JJ
What does NOS mean?

New Old Stock. Basically that watch that's been sitting in the display case for six years.

Yes JJ. I like it a lot, think the orange bezel and numerals, give it the wow factor. If I
would nitpick, not sure with the double arrow hands, but a great looking watch.

I agree totally !!
