View Full Version : The Rolex DateJust (current model)
Lol-x
20 January 2008, 10:41 AM
DateJust Reference Numbers:
Date of production:
The Rolex Date Just was introduced in 1945 as model 4467 and was to become the Flagship of the Rolex Line until the Day Date unseated it a decade later. The DateJust is still in production.
It was initially introduced as the DateJust Jubilee, however, the Jubilee title somehow only became associated with the bracelet. Originally offered in a coin edged version, the fluted bezel came along shortly afterward in 1957.
Some milestones for the DJ:
. 1954.... Introduction of the cyclops
. 1956.... First time another braclet besides the Jubilee offered (Oyster, Jubilee, or strap)
. 1957.... Offered in Stainless Steel
. 1962.... Introduction of the Two Tone models
The Two Tone Datejust has remained largely unchanged (aesthetically) for the past ~60 years and is probably the most copied watch ever introduced.

The Datejust had a movement change from the 16013 to 16233 to 28.8 bps, this was considered a major upgrade at the time since the new movement came with a sapphire crystal.

I was browsing around and came across a post listing all the improvements in the datejust model over the years... Perhaps someone has this bookmarked?
Thanks
Also, is the crown on TT datejust models solid gold?
jmjm
5 October 2008, 04:35 AM
I think the best improvement is the synthetic crystal and not the "domed" plexiglass.
The crown, the bezel, the bracelet middle links, everything that is gold looking is solid 18k gold.
When I bought my DJ 12 yrs ago, after they adjusted the band, they handed me these tiny gold links that they had taken out and told me that it was worth about $300.
The new DJ's look fine. They're getting pretty funky with the dials though.....

Are DJ dials interchangeable?, i.e. will a dial from a modern Datejust 116234 fit an older 16220

Thanks. This is the 3rd Datejust I've owned, and I will keep it for the reasons you've indicated. My previous 2 DJ's were older 16220's and they both had Jubilee bracelets and machined turned bezels (not the smooth one that is on my current DJ in the photo). I bought my previous DJ's, wore them for about a year each, and then sold them. When I saw my current DJ at the AD, I knew that the Oyster bracelet and smooth bezel combination is the cleanest DJ to own.
What a great combination of dial, bezel and bracelet. That is so clean and stylish.

Factory Jubilee style bracelets have 18k solid links. This is what comes with your 2005 DJ 16233. After-market bracelets, sometimes comes plated but most custom-made Italian gold bracelets are also solid gold.
Post some pictures when you get it so we can admire your DJ.

i have been thinking of getting a datejust with jubilee bracelet recently. either new or pre-owned, depends on what deal i can get, not too fussed.
quick questions -
is there anything i need to know when looking at a new one and a pre-owned one??
do they have different movements over the years?
whats the mai difference between a Date and a DateJust?
is a jubilee bracelet a "more appropriate" bracelet for the Datejust than the oyster bracelet?
what are the main differences between the clasp bracelet and the new hidden bracelet in jubilee style?
i have tried 2 new DateJusts yesterday, one with the hidden and the other with clasp bracelet, both SS models. the one i prefer has a white roman dial with the hidden clasp.
thanks in advance.

Movement-wise, I believe the big jump for the DateJust was in 1977 with calibre 3035 (Ref. 16013), the frequency was increased from 19,800 to 28,800 bph and, I believe, it was the first to have Quick-Set. Here is a link, FWIW: http://www.chronometrie.com/rolex3135/rolex3135.html

The current DJ's have used the 3135 movement since 1988. Prior to that the 3035 was used and before that it was 1575. The 3135 is regarded as an excellent workhorse-type movement.
The difference between a Date and Datejust is the size. A Date is 34mm and the DJ is 36mm.
In relation to which bracelet is more appropriate - that is a matter of opinion. There is a school of thought that the Jubilee looks better for formal occasions. There is also a school of thought that that fluted bezel works best with jubilee and bracelet and that domed looks better with oyster bracelet. Wear it how you like it!

It is funny to read this. I recently acquired my Submariner and there are times during the day (when I am wearing it) that I will stare at the sweep second hand and marvel as time seems to pass seamlessly. Glad to hear I am not the only one. Then I realize that I have work to do and move on.

My only debate in whether or not to buy the Datejust II is that the second hand doesn't have a lume dot like the Submariner/GMT II. At lights out, I like to watch the second hand sweep around the dial. I agree that it restores a sense of balance and calm into the day, which I find relaxing. Don't think I've ever seen anyone point that out before. Neat.

I want to buy a DJ with stick type dial but cant decide which to go for, I definitely want a stick dial but cant decide between Blue, the black or the gold face, I also cant decide between the two tone and the stainless steel straps...which is the nicest...so hard to say...
Knowing which might hold its value better might help me decide...
I have seen the DJII but I much dont like the wider hour markers, I want stick type hour markers but the ones on the DJII I have seen look a bit big compared to the more elegant stick markers on the DJ...
I presume a DJII would hold its value better as its a new model but do they cost a vast amount more than a normal DJ ?
I keep looking at a SS datejust with smooth bezel and blue or black stick dial but I cant decide... they are both about £2000 and I wont get chance to see one in the flesh as I only have access to mail order ones and we dont have a Rolex dealer near us... They seem a low price though at about £2000 used for SS or TT with Blue or Black stick dial... I was wondering how much they are new as well (the DJ and the DJII) I have searched for ages on the net but cant find any info on new prices here in the UK...
I might even treat myself to a new one if I can decide which is going to be the best bet long term.

Original silver stick dial included. I am 99% sure it is authentic but I can't see the crown etching at the six marker with a magnifier, should I be able to?
BTW....all your pictures are AWESOME! I am a lady and bought the 36mm size, love big watches! Jubilee bracelet. I had a local jeweler look at it and he said it looked good but the only authorized dealer here said they wouldn't authenticate it, they send theirs to Dallas.

I believe I read that if you take an LED flashlight and shine it on an angle, fairly flat angle, it will appear...with the aid of a magnifier/8x lupe.

Im no expert on all the models etc of the Rolex line, but the 36mm is Not the typical woman's model..tho many women wear 36mm's ...
Steel and YG are a norm..as is the futed bezel..
Champage dial with diamonds could be 'custom' ..but may be a production model ?!? - but with a Oyster.?? - more than likely a TT Jubilee...
.
The diff between an Oyster and Presidential bracelet is significant...
Have you viewed the Official Rolex site to view their models..?

Has the Oyster Bracelet on the Datejust always been available with brushed or polished center links? Or is the polished center link a recent addition to the options list?
Also, I never see any with the same bezel as I have on my Datejust. Is this bezel uncommon? Is it SS or 18k WG? I am under the impression it's SS... but the ad I pulled the link from suggests it's 18k WG. I like that it's different than the same fluted bezel I see on most DJ's, but curious as to why i never ever see it.

Has the Oyster Bracelet on the Datejust always been available with brushed or polished center links? Or is the polished center link a recent addition to the options list?

I believe that bezel is called "engine-turned" ... or maybe it's engine-tuned.

right, i believe it's engine turned as well. Just wondering if Bob's Watches got it wrong as I thought that bezel was stainless and they're advertising it as 18k. Or maybe it was available in both?
Does anyone know what years that bezel was available and when they stopped selling it on the DJ?

Hi guys,
A friend of mine picked this up from a supposedly reliable jeweler. He also had it looked at at another jeweler, in another Country no less. But whats with the dial? Any comments? These are the images he sent me from his iPhone.
Thanks

That is pretty similar to my 1st Knock-off (from Asia) that I got as a 'token' Rolex...(quartz)..from my better half, more that 25+ years ago. Its still running, but I hardly wear it At All.. since I got the 'Real Thing'.. - tho not with diamonds...!!
Love my Real TT DJ...!!

Thank you! It took a lot of searching to find (and decide) what I wanted, but I'm glad I did. Couldn't be happier with it!

As I'm looking to purchase a TT Datejust I am noticing that few TT have oyster bracelets. Exactly how rare are the TT oyster bracelets on vintage DateJusts? Is there a year range I should keepy my eyes out for where oyster bracelets are more common?

Hello,
I am new to the community and am not sure if I am posting this in the right place. I have a quick question that I am hoping you can help with. I have a friend who is a jeweler and is going to order a watch for me. He requested the model number but I coud not find it anywhere. He said that 116334WIO is not the right number. This is that watch I want:
