OMEGA Planet Ocean chronograph

Recently, I tried on the Omega PO chrono (ref. 2910.50.81 on omega.ch.).

Is it just me, or is this watch VERY big?! I have owned the IWC Doppelchronograph, but the Omega PO makes the IWC DC seem like a ladies' watch!

Anyway, I kinda like the Omega OP chrono, and might buy one some day........on a rubber strap, though.

One tiny thing that disturbes the dial design, IMHO, is the subdial at six o' clock that is smaller than the two others.

But I love the curved sapphire crystal. Is it AR coated on BOTH sides? I hope not! But the Omega website does not state anything about it. Also, the black part of the chrono buttons: What is it made of??

Does anyone here own that watch? I would appreciate your thoughts on it!

... IS coated on both sides with the AR. I know many Omega owners that wished it was just on the inside of the watch.

At 45.5mm it is MASSIVE ! I tried on the non chrono, and loved it. Hope to add it to my collection before the summer :joy:

IMHO, AR coating on both sides makes a huge difference. The glare is not as prominent.

You're right, Vernon. But there are also disadvantages of an external AR coating. Firstly, the AR coating can easily get scratched, and once scratched it need a hole new AR treatment. Secondly, the AR coating is a smudge/fingerprint magnet.

Yeah, similar to any sapphire crystal, it is a finger print magnet. The acrylic ones are great as they don't reveal much finger prints.

The AR coating are more durable that we would think. It takes a good buffing to get it out. I agree though once it gets scratched, it won't look as good. I've seen excellent examples of Breitlings with ARs still in tact after 10 years. The bracelets are scuffed, but the ARs are not :cheers:

However, AR on both sides is a definite turn off for me. Makes the watch less of a "tool". I wonder why Omega changed direction with the PO in regard to this? Are they trying to copy Breitling?

I picked up my PO Chronograph 7 days ago....I got the one with the Orange bezel and pushers.

It is HUGE....makes by Sea-Dweller look like a child's watch.

So far, I LOVE it.

AFter one day, the size is no longer an issue....It looks right at home on my wrist.

The Lume is Terrific...much better than my rolex

Keeps time a +0.5 sec/day.

Bracelet is leaps and bounds better than my Sea Dweller.

I seem to remember having read here that you can use PolyWatch paste for that (the paste you'd normally use to remove scratches from plexi crystals). Apparantly, PW would not scratch the sapphire crystal itself but would remove the AR coating.

I read somewhere on this board that you do have to be very careful, and tape up the bezel. Also scrub very hard. I think you can do a search for that specific thread, maybe it's about 2 months old.

I've read other reviews of the PO and have come across some that scoff at its inner and outer AR coating. One review, which says the outer AR coating is prone to scratching, actually shows photos of the PO's crystal turning blue under certain lighting conditions.

The size (45.5 mm -- albeit there is a 42 mm version) is a matter of taste and is something one can easily get used to. I got a 45.5 mm chronometer last year. It's the big daddy of my collection in terms of size and weight (compared to my other timepieces) but is still a joy to wear. I also have an Explorer II, Speedmaster, Carrera Twin Time and Series 2000 (I have other watches, too, but won't mention them as I only use these and my PO nowadays) so the size and weight of the PO is noticeable. Needless to say, the Explorer II, which I acquired only very recently, is my favorite!!!

I don't like chronos but I think Omega have done a great job with the PO range.
