View Full Version : I just caught on fire

I was in my kitchen, holding my 3-year old, when I accidentally leaned against the stove. I guess I hit the dial just right. The front burner started clicking, and by the time I turned around, the right sleeve of my sweater was on fire. It took me about 1/10th of a second to set him down and swat out the flames on my sweater. All in all no damage done, just freaky. And my sweater smells like burned cloth.

Bet that spiked the old adrenaline for a few minutes! Glad you're ok. Did something similar to that as a kid, and can still remember it to this day. Scared the heck outta me.

At least you didn't have to employ the old Stop, Drop & Roll. Glad to hear your child is ok and I'm assuming the new Sub is none the worse.

Glad you're okay.

I'm glad you are ok. December of 2006 my father was standing in front of a space heater with his shirt tail out. It caught fire and quickly spread up his back. Instead of immediately dropping to the floor and rolling around he tried to get his shirt off and then ran and jumped in the shower. Before it was over he had third degree burns covering most of his back. It is now January of 2008 and he is still recovering. It can get out of hand quickly. I'm glad you and your child escaped without harm:cheers:

Uh huh.... Lisa, ask Nancy about the time she almost burned my house down with Christmas candles. I only had to strip all the plaster and drywall the foyer.

Glad it worked out.
Long story, but I once set my SOCK on fire. It was on my foot at the time. ( don't ask how)
Later found out it was those dang "dryer sheets" that coat your clothes in a layer of very flamable substance.
Ever since then, non of those anti static, burn your foot sheets.

Short version of the story.
Alcohol was involved.
Playing with a BIC lighter. The old ones with no safety systems.
Was rolling the "clicker-sparker" on various surfaces, ( jeans, jacket, SOCKS & WHOOOFFF":banghead:
It seemed like instantly the whole sock was aflame, but only the surface of the sock. ( Luckily)
No houses, nor body parts were burned ( this time)

Scary!!! Good thing you were calm, and both you and your lil one are ok.

I have a gas stove as well and its somethings scary when you just hear the sparks but no flames.

Where I work, people are catching fire all the time. You kind of get used to it after a while. Fortunately nobody has been seriously burned. They just take it in stride for the most part. Glad all worked out well for you, Ed...

Welders... over 200 of 'em... Everything from gloves, hats, shirts, pants... They're all equal opportunity burning candidates. Funny thing is, I usually gotta tell them cause they're busy, hood down and paying attention to their work. Occupational by-product...

I'm in the engineering dept., no fires for me...:bye:

Years ago I had company coming for dinner. At that time, fondue was a big thing...(I hear it's making a comeback)....and as an appetizer, I was serving a cheese fondue. Wanting to make the company feel comfy and relaxed, we were having the appetizers in the living room while having drinks. The big decorating theme then was the furniture with a crushed velvet look. The woman and her husband were sitting on the couch. I walked into the living room, carrying the fondue dish on a tray....fuel burner thingy going etc. Just as I reached the couch, the fondue dish and all slid off the tray onto the floor. As it dropped, it hit the edge of the coffee table. The cheese poured out of the fondue dish, poured down the front of the couch and the legs of the woman sitting there....instantly melting holes in her pantyhose, causing her to jump up screaming. The pot then hit the floor and the fondue fuel and flame immediately ignited the carpet so now the guests are scrambling around, the woman is freaking and the carpet is on fire. Wasn't quite the way I'd planned the evening.

I found out the hard way to wear rounded toe boots when cutting and welding. A long time ago I was concentrating on a overhead weld and you can guess the rest. No more work boots with top stitching.

Ed,

Sorry about the thread hijack and glad things are ok. You showed good self control by not dropping your three year old. Some times when we get startled it is a natural reaction to drop what is in our hands or arms.

Bubba, where in the world have you been?

I was trying real hard to sneak back in. You know....my first three wives used to ask me the same question. Ha/Ha/Ha. The fourth wife fully understands and I am glad to be back. I have been reading the old threads and trying to catch up. I have noticed a few changes around the forum and I will post my thoughts soon. I was able to send Tom (KansaiVet) an e-mail aound the holidays, but other than that I was out of touch.

It means a lot that you noticed and thanks.

Good people here.

I understand! The joke around our house is that we should have named the four kids BUD/Miller Lite/BUD Lite/Amstel. Alcohol was involved every time!
