It's a great review. I looked at that very watch at an AD yesterday. Very heavy. I'd say heavier than an SD. Too small for my 8" wrist though.
Thanks for posting, Frostie.

Glad that you liked the review

I've never seen that watch from close. Do you think that this watch would look small on a 7 1/2 " wrist?

Maybe a little small. from looking at your avatar with your wrist it would probably look ok. And it was only $22,500. Lunch money right? Way too rich for me.

You know the funny thing is that 22,500$ are 15,192 euros and that's the list price in the US. The list price for that specific watch here in greece is 22,500 euros (33,323$) which is quite scary :chuckle:

So i guess someone should have a wrist smaller than 7"

I think that rolex should start producing a 40mm DD.

On my 7.5-8" wrist, the watch seems a bit smaller than what I'm used to, but it's super heavy and a decent size for a dress watch.

I've never tried one so that's why i am so confused. I have to try one.

The thing is that i got used to the big Ceramic bezel with the huge numbers and any other rolex watch looks small to me

Strange that I haven't seen that review before. I often visit John's site. Is it a fairly new review?

Anyway, very nice review! And thanks for sharing!

I looked in vain for the information that the current Day-Dates are the ONLY Rolex watches made with a slightly DOMED sapphire crystal, though. And IMHO he could also have mentioned that the bracelet got updated in year 2000, resulting in SOLID centre links (in fact, the centre links on the predecessor DD's did not have solid centre links. They were hollow inside, but looked solid from the outside).

As a sidenote, the new clasp did not come together with the other updates in 2000. It came with the K series (possibly late P-series).

See about the Basel 2000 news here. (http://www.ukwatches.com/Notes/basel.htm)

Hi Bo
In answer to the above, its been on John's page for about 2 - 3 weeks.
I don't know how you do it, but you always amaze me by coming up with all these different links, you certainly have a great wealth of knowledge.

My AD has had a pre-owned YG DD in the display case for a while now. For $17,000 it'll probably be there for a while.

That's a little high for being "pre-owned"!

I see this size issue all the time. I find very hard to believe that the DD looks "small" on a 7" wrist. My wrist is 7 1/2" exactly. I'm 6' 1", 210lb and trust me, it does not look small. It looks exactly the same on me as it does on the guy in the tutorial. You may be used to a larger size and prefer the larger size, but it does not "look" out of place on an average size guy in the 6'...7 1/2" wrist range.:dummy:

Thanks a lot for the info:thumbsup::cheers:. If the DD would look good on my wrist it would be my grail watch cause at this moment it's unaffordable for me. I guess i have to visit an AD and try one

I have always loved the DD model, especially the 118238 (YG, fluted bezel).

I tried one on at an AD some months ago. I have a 7 ½ and IMHO the DD does not look small on my wrist:

My father owned a DD. I would probably not wear a watch like that. You may remember that I sort of scoff at people lamenting the blinginess of gloss dials and WG hands and polished center links, but a gold watch on a solid gold bracelet is too much for me.

If I were going for a high end dress watch, I would get a Patek Calatrava.

Bo, do you typically wear your watches above your wrist bone (elbow side) as it looks in your pics or below the bone similar to guy in the tutorial? IMO...the smaller watched (DD/DJ) look better below the wrist bone or on it...NOT above it.

SPACE-DWELLER

I _always_ wear my watches ABOVE the wristbone:

Watch > wristbone > hand

I hate when the watch is obstructing my hand movements and the crown is touching the overside of my hand.

I wear mine like the guy in the tutorial...wristbone>Watch>hand. I have more space between wristbone & hand then the guy in the pic. Enough that the crown doesn't dig into my hand when I bend my wrist up.

I think that why I don't like the sport models as much. When I wear it below the wristbone (which is where I find it most comfortable) the crown constantly diggs into my hand, similar to how the WG DD does in the tutorial pic.

A stunner in WG. I tried on the platinum with ice blue dial and man is that a heavy watch. Beautiful and solid. $40,000 +. I think if you could get the white gold with the ice blue dial and Romans that would be the bomb.

Great review - I think the WG version looks really good. I have never been a big fan of the YG versions. YG doesn't look good on me (some would claim that SS doesn't look good on me either :-).

Thanks for sharing the review Frostie!

The platinum and wg versions of this watch are simply amazing. I tried one on a few weeks back and was just stunned at the weight of them; obviously because of the weight of gold and platinum as compared to SS.

It is the ultimate rolex in my opinion. I would really love to have one one of these days, but the price is so high. beautiful watch.

I have very wide wrist, way above 8", and always used to wear my Omega 42mm.
I have recently bought my Datejust 36mm and, while it took me time to get used to it, I find it ok. Actually, I love it.

Yes, by today's standards, it is small - but it is a classic watch and the size is completely a matter of getting used to, combination with your clothes and style, as well as judged by fashion and trends...

I have small wrists under 7". My TT DJ fits and looks just right on my wrist. I remember before I got mine I worried that it would look too big. Not so thank goodness! With that in mind, my TT DJ wants to be a Gold Presidential when it grows up.

I TALKED TO MY AD THIS WEEK AND I AM CONVINCED THAT ROLEX WILL "TOUR" THE DDII AND DEEPSEA IN THE US BEFORE END OF SUMMER. I CERTAINLY HOPE SO

A very enjoyable, informative review. John Holbrook's photography IS indeed up there with the best as JJ said, and his writing is excellent too.

I like the white dial Roman DD's as well. Gives a good contrast with the case and bracelet. Truly a beautiful watch!
