View Full Version : 4 months of owning a Steel GMT-IIC

When I first bought this watch I was pleased with it but had a nagging doubt about it being a bit too flashy and bling.

This feeling grew until at about the two week point of ownership. I felt quite strongly that it should not have shiny centre links (or that rehaut with the ROLEXROLEX rubbish and also the inelegant "fat" case). I though I would never bond with it and hankered after the old GMT but with a better clasp and larger crown but with no other changes. I came very close to selling it and just keeping my Sea-Dweller.

I never did sell it (and actually ended up selling the SD recently). Four months on and it has slowly but surely grown on me. Far from being careful to avoid scratching the "impractical" polished centre links, I have just ignored them and worn the watch for what it was designed to do. The first few scratches (although very fine) really stood out on the mirror finish but were then joined by so many others that although still polished, it has really mellowed. It now has a slightly duller appearance that I like as much as the old all brushed look and no individual scratches now show. Also the case now looks normal to my eyes (but any bigger would be ostentatious and impracticable on my wrist). I have realised that the rehaut engraving is fine detail that you only notice when examining the watch very closely and never really see in normal usage (rather like the water mark on paper currency or good stationary).

Other features of the watch that I never had a problem with that really help make me like it as much as I do, are the slimness of the case and it's flat back - the watch is really very comfortable to wear (especially with the half link extension in the clasp - for hot days). Also the crystal is flush with the bezel and the cyclops date window is anti reflective and much easier to read than the old type. The trip-lock crown is the prefect size and never digs into the back of your hand. The clasp is beautifully designed and engineered and the non-rattly solid centre links are a huge improvement. The maxi dial is also an improvement and I like the scratch proof bezel moving in one hour intervals - e.g. a 4 hour time change equals 4 clicks with no ambiguity or scope for error (worth sacrificing some improvised minute timing capability for - after all it is designed to be a GMT watch). Finally I really like the green hand and writing. In most light the green writing blends into the black of the dial making it look cleaner and less cluttered. Likewise the green hand looks understated and I now prefer it to red.

So metaphorically speaking the new shoes I did not like have faded and worn in to become trusted favourites and I will definitely be keeping my GMT-IIC. Although the real tool watches of today are Suunto's and G-Shocks (because you simply replace them if they fail in the line of duty) the GMT-C is a very comfortable, good looking, robust and practical dress watch that can be worn for almost any activity. In contrast the new Sea-Dweller coming out soon looks to be far more about fashion than any improvement in useful practicality. I am guessing few people will find it comfortable enough in weight or under a shirt cuff to be a daily wearer (and professional divers wearing it...um!)

Until the updated sub date comes out in stainless steel to increase the choice, I think the GMT-IIC is Rolex's best improvement in decades.

Great review Peter. Thanks for sharing. I agree that normal wear will give the polished links a (not unpleasant) "patina" which mitigates the scratches that you first get when the watch is new or recently reserviced. I also agree that the 1-hour increments are appropriate for a GMT watch, although I suspect a lot of us use the bezel for parking meters and the like, hence the complaints we hear.

I also agree that Rolex watches are not really "tool watches" in the contemporary sense anymore, and have been thinking about starting a thread with this topic.

Nice review. The watch is a daily wearer for me and I love the comfort of it. I have mine adjusted so that it feels like it is a part of my wrist anyway so there is no slop. I don't even notice it is on anymore. The accuracy is amazing.

Here's to a fine watch and we should have a GMT-Master II c club for the SS and TT versions. FINE WATCH

Excellent review, Pete!

Personally, I went the other way, though, selling my SS GMT IIc to get an SD again since I simply couldn't get used to the bling of the GMT IIc. It's still a very nice watch, however, just not for me.

Nice review. Your comments are spot on. I am still on the fence on my TT GMT. I love the way it looks and turning the bezel just reflects the quality of the mechanism. If it were a little smaller and less I would definitely keep it.

I've learned to raise my left hand slightly higher just so it doesn't scratch the keyboard, table...etc.....I find it less stressful on getting scratches and cheaper to not get them polished all the time. Good Luck!.

Great review! I was like you, having bought the GMTc, then disliked it, wore the Sea Dweller. Now I love the GMT, and it is my daily wearer. The SD is in the box for now, probably will be passed to my son some day.

Pete - excellent review. I had concerns about the polished center links but after two months of ownership, I am over those concerns. I wear the watch daily and it has become a part of my daily activities (except showering and sleeping).

I love my IIc and am so happy with my selection. I'm glad to read others share my excitement and love for such a beautiful watch.

Once again, thanks for sharing and excellent review.

Hi Pete. For all the specific concerns you noted, you could consider downgrading to a ss GMTII. After being in a love affair with my non-C GMT, the IIc offers everything I've been missing... all of the bits you noted, thicker, beefier case and polished links provides more presence on the arm. Though I would prefer the red 4th hand on the new IIc. But, I am happy you kept it and remained in the IIc club!

Cheers!

As a TT IIc owner of just 3 weeks, I continue to search out others' views and opinions regarding the watch. I found your observations most interesting and informative, Pete. While initially zeroing in on a TT Sub, after researching and learning of all the improvements in the IIc, I switched. The concerns many note, e.g., polished center link, bling factor, etc., were, to me, de minimus compared with its enhancements, IMHO. Besides with a TT, who am I to worry about "bling.!!" :lol

Great review, thanks.

Excellent review, and youve had yours around the same length of time as i have.... However i have followed BO, and am trying to flip it or trade it now. Though i concur with some of the things you have said, especially in the bracelet, crown and cyclops, im still heading back to GMT II or root beer (if i can pull off thiss TT)

Nice little writeup. I have a SS IIc on the way to replace my SS II I have now. I have many of the same reservations, in particular I do use the bezel for a timer and leave the time zone changing to the GMT quick set 12h hand. So hopefully I won't dislike that change too much. For me the time zone changing is much more important than the timer, it's only a crude timer anyway.

The green hand and writing I have come around 180° on that opinion. My current GMTII seems to have that hand pop out there and I used to really like that. But at the same time I do very much admire the no date Submariner for the clean no clutter dial. Lately sometimes I catch myself admiring the dial when the minute hand is covering the red 24h hand and thinking that looks very good.

Also of the opinion that it would be nice to not have the polished center links, but even though I really admire the old flip-lock clasp I am very much looking forward to all the improvements in this new clasp and the solid linked band.

Pictures Sunday if I can get the camera stuff together.

I received my ss GMT IIc this week and have been having a hard time taking it off my wrist for the Daytona! I guess it's the new car vs 10+ yo Daytona that WAS my everyday wear. I think it's beautiful and definately not too much bling. My buddy has the the ss Yachtmaster with the polished center links and it too looks great.

I'm keeping it :)

Great review.

I just took delivery of the SS GMT IIc today and have found it better than any of the subs & explorers I've owned in the past. I still love the old blue TT sub I used to own. Maybe I'll get a TT GMT IIc if they make it in blue.

I personally do not own one. (saving up) maybe the wife will do somthing around the holidays. Regardless, I do have two associates who own the Stainless Ceramic GMT the other the two-tone, After viewing both of these watches for some time, I am convinced that this is the most amazing watch Rolex has introduced to date. Anyone agree or disagree, sate your case?

Completely agree with this review. Having just switched from Sub LV to the GMT IIc, I must say he captured how I feel exactly. The supercase is so much more substantial and comfortable. Then, the band and clasp - far superior to what I had with the LV. The sub is functional and works, but I love the solid links, the solid clasp, etc.

It's been quite a while since I wrote the original review in this thread. Anyway, I just decided to have a look at it and was surprised to see so many replies. Thank you everyone for the positive comments.

By way of an update:

Although I have had periods where I have been fed up with the polished centre links enough to seriously consider selling it, I still love my GMTII-C and have now sold almost all my other watches (the others just do not compare to this one). I have given the watch a few more dings and dents and it has held up very well to some quite careless everyday wear.

So, I can actually live with the one aspect I do not like. Even though they are not really polished anymore, they do look a bit scruffy as the thousands of tiny hairline scratches are invisible on the brushed links but swirl in all different directions on the centre links.

At some point I intend to ask RSC in London or Bexley if they will brush the centre links for me. I realise that they may refuse but cannot see why they should - I am after all a fee paying customer. If they agree, I will let you know and those who are not buying one because of the polished links (I know there are plenty) can then go ahead and buy with confidence.

I think the watch is Rolex's best ever but still cannot understand why they are pursuing the polished look. Virtually no one had a problem with the all brushed links and in contrast plenty hate the polished look so it seems a no brainer to me. Rolex if you read this: get a grip!

In summary the watch is close to perfection and the one real problem actually easily fixed.

...as you said, the half-link extension in the clasp is a feature that I really love. It´s SO practical to me, that everytime I get my GMT-IIc out of the watchbox, it ends being on my wrist for days...

The new styled clasp is a huge improvement on comfort at the Rolex line, over the old thinner clasp. Watch feels smooth on the wrist, and it´s a very 'plus' for wearing.

About the polished Center Links, I like it as they are, but I have to admit that it gets scuffs easier. Although I have seen a member of this forum having his Bracelet brushed (don´t remeber who) and I recall he saying that polishing the area around the coronet in the clasp was quite tricky..
...just to throw out an idea, I guess it would not be cost-efficient, but maybe asking to buy a whole new bracelet could be an option? a brushed one, I mean.
But afterall, yours is already scuffed, so it might be better to polish this one, and get a polished other as replacement - or for other occasions, maybe...

Anyway...Just enjoy your watch!

Wear it well!
Erwin.

Lately sometimes I catch myself admiring the dial when the minute hand is covering the red 24h hand and thinking that looks very good.

Strangest thing just happened. I have never thought about the clutter of the gmt hand. Right after I read this post I looked at my gmt-c and the minute hand was covering the gmt hand. Really weird, it did look nice but then it would not be a gmt right?

Anyway, I had a gmt-II and sold it for the C, after 2 months no regrets.

Great review. I too struggled with the polished links hated them at first. I ended up buying a cheapy Hong Kong polished bracelet and sported it on my 1675 for a few weeks before getting a GMT IIc. the scratches made it look less shinny even more so when I did the unthinkable and took a 000 steel wool to the polished links and made them way less shinny. I have not had the balls to do this to the GMT yet and probably will not. Four days into the lifetime of this watch and it looks better and better ever day. The clasp itself is truly amazing and I have not yet been able to capture its true beauty in a photo.

I totally agree that this is the best watch that Rolex has produced in a long time. I had owned a Submariner some 23 years ago and sold it to get a GMT II because of the extra functionality for time zones (I travel a lot). I once had my GMT ripped off my wrist jumping from a C130 in the British paras and found it on the DZ grass later. Muddy and not a scratch on it. I have worn it daily since with one Rolex service.

I have loved the black and red 1987 model but I bought this new version last week and am blown away with it. The quality of EVERYTHING is improved. It's not just a small incremental change it's a very well thought out upgrade to a successful formula and the engineers have done an awesome job.

I also think that we will be seeing a lot less counterfeiting now with the new bezel and internal rim lettering and that's good for everyone.

I agree with your comments on the polished center links.......just wear the darn watch and forget it! On the green time zone hand, I think the red was certainly easier to see than the green, although I prefer the green with my glasses on!

This is set to be a high value piece for the future and a great investment. I know both my sons will have a hard time figuring out who gets the black/ red or the ceramic when I kick the bucket!

(Is that why they are suggesting parachuting again?.........:wlae: )

Great review, thanks! I have recently discovered this watch, too, at the recommendation of my AD as an 'in-between' the Sub and DeepSea. I was interested in the SD, but since they are no longer available, he suggested the GMTIIc. It is really growing on me, but has one problem for me..the cyclops. I don't mind the polished links, but if I get the GMTIIc I will have the RSC remove the cyclops. In my mind, it will be close to perfect for me then. Just my opinion.

For me, the polished center links never bothered me. Probably because I've been wearing Breitling's for over 10 yrs; the entire bracelet is polished! In due time, the minor scratches gave the watch character. I love the watch - hands down over the Breitling or my IWC.

the polished part of the clasp is really scratch prone.

the polished parts are really shiny and can attract attention.

the feel of the bracelet is excellent

black ceramic bezel is really classy

the hints of green are ok but red would be more visible.

the blocky case is ok and fits with the larger numbers on the bezel

conclusion: the watch is really a dress watch and not an everyday watch.

FAO Munichblue - your AD has done a stellar job on brushing the PCL's - does anyone think it will be possible to replace the bracelet with one from the new ceramic sub with the glidelock? Just curious.

And a brilliant initial review - My GMT IIc is causing me an incredible amount of pain.....

It's a wedding present from my fiancee and I'm not married for another 2 1/2 weeks so I can't wear it!! I can only get it out of the box to show friends if they come over but it's staying locked away until I'm married. :crying:

Be careful about that. Another member tried this and discovered, much to his shagrin, that the AR coating is in 3 places! On the underside of the crystal, in the exact shape of the cyclops, again on the upper side of the crystal, in the exact shape, and then again on the cyclops itself.

Thanks for the original post and write up Pete.

..Guess I'll add and keep this thread going along...

It's been fun to go back and see that you got your watch when it was still a fairly new offering in the Rolex line up (got mine in JUL 08)...

I recall the torrent of comments and opinion regarding the GMT IIc when it came out...."Love it..hate it" and everything in between. At first, the comments seemed much more negative. Hindsight always being clearer, I suppose redesign on a model that was beloved and unchanged for decades would generate such strong feelings.

Over time it seems many have undergone a similar change of heart with the GMT IIc such as yourself. Though I do know there are some who have taken the time and $ to brush the PCLs, many seem to have grown comfortable with features they previously thought were ugly or unbefitting.

Me? I liked it from the gitgo and it's still one of my faves!

Great read. I too was initially pained by the sight of the hair line scratches on the bracelet. But I eventually got over it.

Personally, I think this is the most beautiful watch in the range. I also have a Sea Dweller that was intended to be the daily and the GMTIIc to be the weekender. Just over a year of ownership of the GMTIIc, it's now my daily (including weekends). The Sea Dweller is only worn at night or when I want to "dress down".

Good review. My only comment is that when you have to travel in different time zones or deal with entities located in anopther time zone, the GMT II comes in very handy IMHO. Problem is that most people don't like fiddling with setting it up. Once you have done it a few times, it's easy.

The polished part of the links takes some getting used to. I have a Cartier Pasha that has polished center links and are pretty scratched up from years of normal wear and tear. Over time you just forget about it. I do like the brush job that MunichBlue did on his GMT IIc.

First post for me.

Pete. You echo my sentiments. I sat along time in the shop looking at the new green sub, a second hand pepsi GMT-Master, and the new GMT ii C - a black sub was on order for me and deposit paid.
I walked away with the GMT ii C, and later that night, in fear and horror, I took it off and placed it on the coffee table in front of me, eyeing it with suspicion. Day two, I tried it on my right wrist, and saw a different perspective. Day 2/3 onwards and I cant take my eyes of it. It took some time to come around to the new shape, and the bling factor, but I certainly am v happy with it. For me, the comparison side by side with the older GMT (which is the watch I thought I really wanted), left no question.
I think the bling factor is something I see more in the mirror reflection of the watch, than the way it really looks. The reflection in the mirror somehow seems to catch all the sparkly bits.

I believe that the things we love the qiuckest, will fade the quickest. Music, films, people, and instant bond, or liking of something often fades faster than a love that grows over a longer period. (Granted, this is not always true)

Not an everyday watch?? I have the TT and I agree it might not be everday watch but I get over that. The SS is everyday for sure. Leather band is what I think of for dress but then again I rock what I got.

Great Review. This and the SS YM II is by far the best "new" Rolexes on the market today IMO

Original review and subsequent comments all provide so much useful information. Thanks to everyone for detailed and thoughtful insights. So glad joined this forum. Deciding soon whether to get SS or TT.

Pete,

You have covered most of the reasons why the GMT TTc is one of my favourites.

A recent acquisition of GMT II C SS is extremely satisfying: solidity, function, design, workmanship, all top level. Can't take my eyes off it. Not worried about tiny scratches either. This one is a keeper!!!:clap::clap:

I've worn mine every day now since acquisition in May 2010. At first I found the little hairline scratches in the PCLs a bit distressing, like "oh no, look what I've done. I can't even look after this." But after more than a year of daily use, the little scratches have formed something of a patina - like a wedding ring. I feel the watch has gained some character.

Incidentally, at the time I was making the decision to purchase, the PCLs were one of the reasons I went with the TT rather than the SS. I thought "well if there is going to be a matt/shiny contrast might as well make the most of it". It's one of the reasons I think TT works so well on the GMT-II-C. The other, as Directioneng's photos capture so well, is that the gold finished bezel numbers look stunning in gold, just STUNNING.

Pete,

Very nice review. But sorry, I’m still not convinced by your and others’ comments.

I still do not like the IIc and am looking for a mint condition 16710 Coke. Just different strokes for different people.

The GMT II C SS.

Took my girlfriend in for the first time to a Rolex AD. She locked on to the GMT II C SS and said "That is the coolest watch in here." This from a now WIS. :read:

There you have it.

the gmt2c is really a solid watch. 20 years down the road and its still going to be a solid watch.

i love the new GMT and was very close to buying it. in the end i purchased the green sub for the exact reason you stated. i don't mind being different, but too much bling gave me pause. that said, i think it is absolutely stunning and love your review. thanks so much.
