If only it were that simple Faith! The debate is long on this subject.

I'm in FAVOR of medical marijuana. Hell, I'm in favorite of legalizing it too!

We have a friend that suffers from a debilitating case of RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis). She was on all types of steriods including prednisone. Serious pain and serious side effects. She once asked my wife and I to help her commit suicide because of the pain and suffering.

Fast forward two years and she is now an active member of society who just happens to smoke a little dope in the mornings to alleviate her pain. Is she cured, no way - but she is happier both physically and mentally and I'm honored to call her my friend.

It's against the law here in Florida but I'll be damn.

No argument from me here. As a psychotherapist and certified substance abuse assessor for the state of PA, I have had the experience of facilitating individual and group drug & alcohol counseling. I have seen clients and their family members physical, emotional and financial lives destroyed by chemical abuse. I know I have posted this before, but it bears repeating: drug use is an insidious, prevalent and highly destructive problem. There is no positive ending except abstinence. When one begins to use, it is largely a roll of the dice as to who will be an experimenter and who will become an addict - and you may discover your truth too late. Stay away so you never have to make this discovery . . .

No question. My family has been damaged by the effects of drug abuse, and it's the worst kind of pain.

But denying someone a medication that can help alleviate pain and other symptoms is unethical, IMO, especially when it's done for purely political reasons. :2:

They look happy because they aren't smart enough to know that what they have there is 100% Grade F Crappy Schwag.

For the record, I'm all for legalization, but the whole notion of "Medical Mary Jane" is just utter BS. Inhaling burning leaves will always carry side effects, including the risk of cancer. For medical uses, a drug is also useless when you cannot know or control the amount of the content -- in this case THC. Smoked marijuana may have 1% THC or it may have 15%, you just don't know (aside from all the sticky crystals hanging on it, lol). THC may in fact have medical value, as the government's studies admit. But, it needs to be reduced to an actual medical form to be effective and predictable.

If you're for marijuana being legal -- e.g., because it's no worse than alcohol or any other reason -- then just say it. If a state wants to legalize it, then just do it. Pretending it is medicine is an insult to science.

Just to let you know, MOST medical users do not smoke it. Ingestion is the preferred method. Many are in candy (peppermint patties to be exact - go figure)

It's pretty bold of you to state it's not a medicine. Insulting to science or not, it has been used by Native people for thousands (yes thousands) of years as a medicinal substance. Then again, if it's not a little white pill....

It is presumptuous of me to assume you've never been exposed to anyone that has used medical marijuana? I'm sure if you had, you wouldn't state it to be "utter BS". To see friends or family suffer in great pain, and then see results because of marijuana is all the scientific data I need (psychosomatic effects notwithstanding).

And on that note, I'm going to refrain any further comments on this highly debatable topic. Just remember, "knowledge is power".

No, it's not BS. Sure there are those who would hide their true intentions behind the curtain of medical marijuana, but all you have to do is talk to cancer patients or those afflicted with AIDS to know for a fact that the drug helps them deal with nausea, pain, lack of appetite, etc, etc.

That is not BS, just hard fact.

Over and above that, I also think pot for recreational use should be decriminalized. Way too much money is spent trying to stop its use, with next to no success. You cannot control the use of a drug that can be grown in your home. Trying to do so and wasting billions of dollars in the effort is fools folly.

Now that's BS.

I don't mean to ruffle any feathers. And I'm not being bold, I'm just repeating what I learned when I had to work on some controlled substance legal questions recently.
http://www.justice.gov/dea/marijuana_position.html

While I am all for legalizing it, and I certainly agree that the enforcement strategy is a bit silly, I do agree with the DEA's argument that smoked marijuana isn't "medicine" in the clinical sense. That's all. Doctors prescribe medicines in specific amounts. You cannot do that when you do not know the % content of the active ingredient.

But, it's all good. I guess any path to legalization is better than none. But I don't like the farce of, say, pretending you have glaucoma when really you just want to smoke up.

Governments tend to be a bit, well, ehhh, hypocritical. Alcohol is legal (and in most countries a substantial contributor to the Treasury) and so is tobacco. Both are potential slow killers. Yet they are not outlawed for economical and practical reasons. People will always find ways to get the stuff and if it's made illegal, it will become worse because other 'organisations' will step in to fill the void.

The possession of marijuana and related substances categorised as 'soft drugs' is completely legal in my country. The status quo is an extremely complicated compromise of tolerance where it is legal for a 'coffeeshop' to sell 4 gram portions but illegal to buy stock over 500 grams at a time.

Much to the chagrin of other EU countries the legality of possession for own use still exists.

What is the alternative? Throw everybody into jail with those 4 grams? Rule with an iron fist of oppression? History has taught us that this will not work, people want their drugs and will find ways to get them.

Control and education is the consensus here. Hard drugs are illegal and not tolerated but the abusers are treated as medical cases and not as criminals.

Humans are weak and temptations are abundant. If governments really want to end drugs use they must suffer the consequences. Ban ALL drugs. Alcohol, tobacco, the lot and they must be prepared to deploy a vast amount of resources to control this. And it will not work.

I had an anthropology prof. who did her thesis on this. Basically, she argued that the "allowed" drugs in a society are the ones that the particular society has elevated to some sort of totemic or sacred status. For European descended cultures this was alcohol, but for other cultures it was other drugs. American Indian tribes and hallucinogens, for example.

And on that note, it is almost 4:20 where I am.

Grow 'em if you've got 'em!

I'm ENVIOUS of our TRF friends abroad that can and do walk into a coffeeshop to partake legally. I have a peer in CA that teaches a course at a community college on growing marijuana (can you believe it).

As adults it's a thread that should be discussed with lively debate and respect for other's opinion. We have Faith to thank for opening this back up and allowing many of us (myself included) to voice our opinion.

Even though illegal the POTUS claimed he smoked marijuana to a great extent while in College now, it doesn't seem to have hurt his learning or chances in life does it. M. Phelps the greatest swimmer of all time who needed his lungs... was and avid smoker too I believe so, doesn't seem it hurt him.

I understand there are those of us who do not and will not ever partake that is your personal choice not just because it's illegal, lets be honest. Didn't the UK just publish something on this about the schizophrenia and weed? (in layman's terms) They concluded that not every human is predisposition to this problem and debunked allot of previously published stuff on that.

Mind altering drug? I don't consider taking a hit or two a nite in prep to going to bed for a good nights sleep a bad thing, or some one who is under weight to take as many hits it takes to get the munchies and again it's grown naturally right out there in the garden along with your veggies... (not yet at least) but some of you get it. Why do the scientist want to break down the natural composition of the product and make it into something it's not just so they the creators of it can charge ungodly sums of $$ for it. Yes to all you conformist it's illegal but, why are you also the mice following the pied piper?
Frans has also posted his views and the NL (?) views on marijuana so, here are mine too.

Oh yeah, the 6 volt system. When you revved the gas, the lights brightened. They changed over to the 12 volt in 1967. One of my beetles was a 61 with four-inch (no lie) shag carpeting everwhere! Great thread here!

I know both recreational users as well as medical users. All mature adults who are very successful in their careers and contribute to their communities in positive manners.Yet the government thinks they should be incarcerated in cages.

If anyone still thinks the continued prohibition of cannabis has ANYTHING whatsoever to do with health or "protecting the children",they are seriously misinformed. It's all about power, control and money.

I am hopeful I will see prohibition end in my lifetime. The amount of money and lives wasted in this fruitless "war" on a plant saddens my soul.

It maybe hard to believe but I have never touched any drugs apart from coffee and alcohol.

 Ditto.
Well, no illicit drugs, I have had stuff prescribed for me.

Did anyone have a chance to attend any concerts from way back when that were noteworthy? I had a chance to see Hendrix at the Spectrum here in Philly and he was incredible.

I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers back in '79 in Santa Barbara, and I've seen Santana twice. All excellent shows. I wish I could've seen Jimi.

These videos bring back great memories . . .

Alvin Lee was such a good guitarist, but you don't hear about him.

Hi Lucy D.
I was a youth in my prime! All of 16 years old. Went down with my older sister & our friends for the whole weekend in June...we got all 3 day tickets!
It was quite a show...saw them all, Mamas & Papas, the Who bashing their stuff, Hendrix burning his guitar, the awesome Janis Joplin, Dead, Airplane, the cream of the music crop at that time...and diverse styles of music, jazz w/ Hugh Masakela, soul w/ Otis Redding, sitar music w/Ravi Shankar...except I fell asleep during his sets....very hypnotic.
No problems, no od's, no killing, a good time was had by all. I'm going watch my Pennebaker dvd...it's very good.:smokin:
