View Full Version : What's your favorite pen?

I just commented on a recent thread and I mentioned my passion for pens, particularly, Mont Blancs. I have quite a few and love them all, even a Mont Blanc highlighter. My favorite is my Sterling Silver MB fountain pen.

How about you guys? Fountain pen, ball point, roller ball, or just plain old Bic?

Let me know. One we all have in common is that us Rolex owners are passionate about our passions.

I used to have a few Crosses in high school and college. I have a Montblanc cool blue starwalker as my only nice pen these days.

I like using fountain pens, but don't really have any expensive ones. That may change. I have my eye on a nice Waterman.

I carry one of these space pens everywhere.

I know it's not cool or fancy but it fits in my pants pocket and is handy to carry anywhere.
In fact I have a theory. Since I started carrying my own pen I no longer use the public pen at the bank teller, gas station or post office. I didn't get sick this winter either (Knock wood).
I'm no germ-o-phobe but I wonder if there is any correlation between health and not using the same pen as every other runny nosed person at the bank window.

I had one of those space pens when I was in high school. They still are popular and can still write upside down, through grease and underwater. Cool! I almost forgot about them.

Mont Blanc Le Grand ballpoint and pencil.
I've got long fingers so the extra size of the Le Grand fits perfectly.
Also very fond of Graf von Faber Castell's Perfect pencil. just beautiful.

My favourite pen? It must have the following qualities.:read:

1. As long as it writes....who cares.

2. As long as it's from the office stationary....who cares.

3. When I'm on my lunch break, I just leave it on my desk and never have to worry about anyone pinching it....so who cares.

4. End of the day, I still leave it lying on my desk.....and it's still there the next morning.

So who cares!! :rofl::rofl:

On a day-to-day basis, I rather like the Cross Townsend - the brass barrel gives it nice weight and balance:

To be perfectly candid, though, my cheapest pen is a Waterman Phileas, and the smooth ink flow more than makes up for its lack of heft:

Bill,
I bought a space pen for my wife a few years ago. She loved it. It always rode in her purse. After a while she lost it so I bought another. You're right , nothing fancy but it does it's job well.

My pen favorite? I still have a Mont Blanc rollerball around somewhere, but quit using it years ago. My favorite is whatever I can dig out from the bottom of my purse or kitchen drawer that isn't dried up. It's usually emblazoned with some pharmaceutical company mishmash....

It's amazing all the gunk that will attached to the writing end after sitting in a purse for a week or two. More than once a wife has handed me a pen and it looked more like a bottle washer.:dummy:

I sell pens for a living, so I do not really have one favorite. I can say I prefer fountain pens over ball pens and roller balls.
Having said that, in my regular rotation of pens,or what ever is inked up, I go between a Dupont,Pelikan,Cartier,Montblanc or Visconti.

I draw the line on ball points. My dailies are the Mont Blanc and Colibri rollers on the left. I like the Colibri because I can fit a modern Pilot G2 gel refill...I like the way the ink flows on those. When I'm on the move I have a number of Cross pens that fit nicely in a shirt or in the Day planner and are easier to replace if lost or taken.

I also have my Grandfathers every day Scheaffers fountains that he used in the 1940's.

And on a serious note here, too - I don't use pens very often; only to sign things and write checks and do the grocery list. An expensive pen would be a waste for me. Plus, I would lose it, I'm sure. Now, a nice watch is more up my alley because I always have to know what time it is to keep track of my life! And I can't lose it because I don't take it off.

A few months ago I wrote about how I once flushed my first Mont Blanc - a gift - down the toilet. (this was years ago.) I had a hole in my pocket. Please don't ask for any more details.

I use a couple different mont blanc rollerball pens with medium ink. One is the rubber starwalker with metal lines. It costs too much and isn't that comfortable writing for long periods. While the pen is big and slightly too heavy, the tip where you put your finger is tiny. I love mont blanc because the ink. I am a lefty and the ink dries before I smear up the ink as I rub my hand over it. I like the feel of a G2, but my hand has ink on it and I manage to smear the page slightly. I am also impressed by the way the ink screws to lock into its place and never jiggles or rattles around. How do the other brands compare in ink refills? Comfort? and Price?

If I were inclined I could go buy a Mont Blanc right now.

Certainly on a day at the range I have spent $300 on ammo.

But there are so many things I'd rather have for $300 I will never own a Mont Blanc. I have some Cross pens in my desk where they have sat for 20+ years unused which I received as a gift.

Right now my pen is a Delta Elite from Staples. That is about the most I'm willing to spend on a pen.

You can buy the pocket clips for the Space Pens now. I have a black one that cost quite a bit of money and I keep it in my Palm Pilot Wallet with the pen clipped in the pen holder.

I also like this pen as it is so versatile. This is the one item though where I don't care enough to get the best.

I am aware of the fine writing pens out there but MY pen has to always be Montblanc. I have had 10 over the the last 12 years. I have a MB 221 which is a vintage fountain pen that is currently being shipped to me now. Fine writing is really based on writing with a fountain pen. It takes practice and can get messy. Ask me how. I also have a Vintage Mont Blanc retro that came out in Rollerball form recently. Pictured is my MB 221 thats in transit. The MB ballpoint and rollerball are better for daily use.

As far as a "decent" pen, my very favorite was a 25 year old Pelikan 200 series in blue marble that just broke. I sent it back to Pelikan for repair and the service person told me they no longer have parts. They will attempt to fix it, but if they are unable, I was told I'd be sent new upper and lower parts. Blame it on an abnormal pattern of axon-firing, but the last time I checked new upper and lower parts constitute an entirely new pen. Am I missing something here? :banghead:

My favorite pen seems to change with the weather and what kind of ink I am using at the time.

For now I am carrying a MB 149 with a fine point filled with Parker Quink blue! It is just excellent for taking meeting notes at work and the color of the Quink blue is very sweet when it comes to color variations and the overall appearance of the documents written with it.

A few weeks back it was the MB 147 Traveler using MB Blue/Black and before that it was a Sheaffer Nostalgia with a flexy fine nib laying down Delta Blue. By the way if you can get Delta Blue do it. Everybody I talk to is having a hard time keeping it in stock this year.

I suppose that is one of the great things about collecting writing instruments. The just never gets old as there is so many choices available. It's kind of like owning a GMT II with the Oyster bracelet, all three bezel inserts and the super Jubilee! You can change it so many different ways it always stays interesting!
