Hi,

I do not know how to remove the bracelet so I can see the serial number.
Can someone help me, please? I have owned it over 10 yrs. and would like
to sell it. The potential buyer wants the serial number.

If it is an open lug design, just stick a pin, needle, really tiny screwdriver, or some such object into the lug hole. Actually, your first choice would be a wooden toothpick, but that might not be strong enough. Push the end of the pin that secures the bracelet to the case far enough in so that the pin, which is held in place by spring tension, recesses into the tube surrounding the pin enough so that you can slide the bracelet away from the case. Try not to launch the pin to the other side of the room while you are doing this. Some people like to put tape around the lug hole to avoid scratching the case.

The end of the bracelet that you want to remove is the 6 o'clock side. :cheers:

I just received my first Rolex watch (it was a gift). It is an Oyster Perpetual Date model and I'm told it is a 1957 vintage.

Where can I find more information about this watch, particularly about the movement. I haven't been able to remove the band to get the serial number (as described in the above post). I have a tool to press the pin but the band doesn't come off. The band is pretty tight in the lugs and I don't want to force it. Do I have to press both ends of the pin at the same time to slide it out?

I inherited a Sub which was purchased in 1981, but the serial number on the warranty starts with 616xxxxx. So, how can I determine the date of manufacture?

I have 2 questions about this. I'm finding two conflicting Rolex Serial #/Year charts. One is the one you show, the other is this:

Which I have also seen in several places. They don't match up. Why is that?

Also, the one you quote has a very weird hole between 1948-1951 and I haven't been able to find out why that is. Not only does it not have date/serial number correlations, but the production numbers seem off. From 1948-1951 (3 years) there were 81,936 Rolex’s made, but from 1947-1948 (1 year) there were 99,677 Rolex’s made. Is it just me or does that seem fishy? It would make sense if I heard about them changing factories or something weird happened in that period that stopped production for a while, but I don't see any mention of it anywhere. Please advise.

None of them are totally reliable all any can tell you is a rough indication when a case was stamped.And not when a completed watch was made, and these Internet codes only work with the faster selling models like SS, with the gold models there could be quite a overlap for several years.

Your bound to get this kind of thing when end users try to come up with lists like this after the fact. They had an interest but Rolex did not, or doesn't care to release records they may have kept. But Rolex was just trying to sell them, they weren't trying to collect them.

Not sure if any list is more recognized as being more accurate than another, but then again like Padi said it's only an approximation anyways.

A question, how does one know which case came in which year for these years since ref numbers overlap in 68 and 70? Also 70 and 71?

I think you can attribute that to the fact that these are only case stamping serialnumbers. These serial numbers in no way indicate when the complete watch was put together. Remember some models well sell slower than others. So there is bound to be some overlap.

Not to mention this list was put together by end users and not by the manufacture so there's going to be some guessing.

Anyway this was my guess based on how I understand it.

Thanks Dan, just that say a 68 watch could also be classified as a 70's one or vice versa based on those overlapping numbers which is a difference of 2 years, so would require more knowledge on the dial, etc to date it precisely I guess.
