Hi,
Newbie here so be gentle as I dont know most the lingo

Basically my Dad has asked me to find out how much his Rolex is worth, he has a Milgauss 1019 identical to this one apart from it having a white face.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Does it come with Box and/or papers and any service history. It also depends on the condition. These all increase the value of the watch as it is more complete. I would not like to give an estimate ( it is very valuable though) but i am sure others will be along to help.

About USD40,000.00 if including box and papers, but this is going from a sale of a NIB piece from about September last year. Perhaps factor in a 20% hike by now, but if without box and papers, but with a certification from an RSC, USD40,000.00 would still be a fair price.

He hasnt got papers, he bought it second hand in 1979 for £200. It was last fully serviced by Rolex in 1998 and had a new strap fitted. The actual time piece is near enough mint though.

I would recommend that your Dad gets it serviced again and keeps the Service documents as this proves authenticity and is very attractive to buyers. If he does that then as Lee said you have a very valuable watch- how much did you think it was worth?
Good Luck

I've just rang him again and he actually has a full service history, he just doesn't have the original receipt and box.

We both have no idea what its worth really, he was just intrigued as everytime he goes into his Jewellers the shops manager is all over him telling him that if he ever wants to sell his watch to go see him, and then when he asks what its worth the manager wants to know how much he wants for it! He thinks they are trying to rip him off

I think your dad is right on. It sounds like they ARE trying to rip him off.

Great news- the Jeweller will probably try and rip him off. If you have the service documents then that is nearly as good as the box on papers- but not quite.

Check this link from a sale in new york in April
Lots 146 147 and 148, just click on the numbers for the details

Hi Tommasi,

As with anything vintage condition is key. If I'm reading correctly yours is a black face? I'm not sure there's a significant difference in pricing from one to the other, but recent asking prices for white hover in the 21K to 23K euro range (no B&P) Supporting paperwork is a plus. Might be a good idea to check with an RSC about a current service (keeping it original) and re-up the documents.

As others have said, if selling is a consideration and all is well, you are better off listing on a vintage forum.

Post a photo if you can.

In this chart over Rolex Price Evolution (http://www.minus4plus6.com/PriceEvolution.htm) you can see what the Milgauss cost during the years.

As you can see, it was a good investment! :chuckle:

As for price, I would second the Euro valuation given.

No it has a white face-I'll post a picture in the next couple days, I'll have to go my Dads to do it as he is a bit of a technophobe and has no idea on how to do it!

Nowadays he only wear it for special occasions, funerals, weddings, etc. Its funny really seeing he used to work in shipyards and he used to actually wear it while he worked!

I was thinking 'white'
I'm much happier now that you show it to be a brushed steel (aluminium I think).
That is a beautiful classic Milgauss dial. Don't ever sell it, I can well understand some salesperson jumping up and down to get you to sell it. :banghead:
The dials with the 1/5th second markings (such as yours) are better IMHO than the 1/2 second markings which appear on some 1019 models.

I'm just glad my Dad asked me to do some research when he did, I don't like the idea of some unscrupulous salesman trying to take advantage of him!

Is the value still the same as the one quoted earlier in the thread? Thankfully he has no plans to sell it but he really should get it insured!

Lol-x
7 July 2008, 09:54 PM
I would estimate the value to be somewhere around the $30,000 to $40,000 mark.

My Dad is now wishing to sell.

What would be the best way to go about this? I'm in the North East of England, are they any specialist auctions nearby?

Cheers

Get a broker. The last thing you want to do is try to hock that on eBay or here and get burned by someone that won't pay.

That's not the type of watch you sell on your own. They'll take a percentage, but you'll know the obtained money is legit and you won't have to worry about scammers.

 I agree.

But, going against the grain here, I think do try to persuade your dad not to sell (unless you really need the money). Although it is good to get the money, I think that watch has a story about your family. You should ask your dad about his story about this watch and should be part of your family and your future generations. That is worth a lot more in my opinion.

I wouldn't sell it either, but then you're on a Rolex forum, so you know the advice you'll get.

Cheers for all the help btw guys. Unfortunately he needs the money as he is no longer working, so keeping it is not an option

Try to keep it for another year then put it on auction and lets hope for the economy is getting better so the bankers can buy more expensive toys :D

Bonhams is another auctioneer in the UK that does vintage timepieces.

Best of luck to your father. Quite a nice investment his original 200 quid will bring him!!

Just my opinion but one of the better ways to sell is through one of the big auction houses Sotheby Christies or Bonhams. You will get an international crowd bidding. On an item of higher value (like your milgauss) they will negotiate commission, insurance and other fees. Just ring them up and they will tell you the procedure

Just to let everyone know, I've decided to sell through Bonhams, so if people are interested in the watch it should be on auction in June. Thank you for all the help

A watch like that takes a very specific buyer. It might take a little while to find the right person or entity to purchase it.

It had an estimate of £10-15k though the site didn't offer any further details.

I saw a very nice and complete set 1019 sell for £17,000 in 2010. It was priced at £18,750 but cash talked.

take it down to Burlington Arcade, one of the dealers will pay you £2000 and sell it for £30000 :chuckle:

seriously i'd hang onto that unless the money is needed
