View Full Version : My Deepsea 'Review'

After wearing this watch for a few days I'm ready to give my personal 'review' of the watch so far...
To be honest, I'm a bit torn. While I love the look of the watch, I have to be honest and admit something... it's not 'that' comfortable. It's a bit top-heavy feeling and you really feel the weight when you rotate your wrist for anything -- even if you tighten the fit pretty tight.
I've gotten quite a few 'looks' and even a couple of sub owners stopping me to ask, "why is your watch so big?" hehe. Both didn't know what the Deepsea was. Most people when they see the watch are really impressed by it. It just 'looks' like this big, impressive watch. It has a much different look than subs or the SD. It's just this big HULK of a watch.
But again... I'm going to give it a few more days to try and get used to it. But right now I have to say that it's not very comfortable. You know how when you wear a watch that just fits 'oh-so-right' and you practically FORGET you're even wearing a watch? Well, the Deepsea isn't one of those watches. It's heavy. Really heavy.
I'm going to give it a bit more time to see if it's just something I need to adjust to. But I wanted to give my honest feedback on it.
Here's a photo I just took...

It looks great on your wrist!
I'd like to share my take on this. I have a really small wrist, so my 42mm Seiko Atlas is probably proportional to my wrist as the SDDS is to yours (based on that pic). The Atlas is heavier and thicker than any other watch I have. When I think about it, I definitely know it's there.
However, that's only IF I think about it. Since I've gotten off the mental block that there's a huge chunk of metal on my wrist, I've really fallen for this watch. It might be the most comfortable bracelet watch I own, with the way it wraps nicely around my wrist. When I'm going about my daily activities, I don't even notice it. Hopefully the DS will be the same way with you.

Man, the DSSD looks very good on your wrist. As for the weight, it will take some getting used to. I am sure you will love the watch.

I think I will experiment a bit with different fits, etc. The beauty of this watch is the self-adjustable mechanism. So maybe I'll try a little looser and later try wearing a bit tighter than usual.
Thanks, guys!

Also try wearing the watch on the place where it belongs, on top of the wrist just behind the little boney bit. Personally I also wear my watches as you have it in the picture but officialy that's the wrong way and makes it move around a lot. I do love the look of the deep sea and it looks good on your wrist. Probably just needs some getting used to but I think tighter and higher up the wrist might be the best place as it won't interfere with your hand as mutch and will just sit on top of your wrist in stead of hang down from it.

Thanx for your honesty Johno... I really do love the look of that DSSD... Your point is noted: it may be pretty, but it is a substantial watch to say the least... and be sure you are ready for the weight! Noted..... many thanx. :-)

i wear my YMII daily so i now exactly what you mean
i imagine my YMII is even heavier than your DSSD
but you will get used to it, trust me
after two months of wearing my 260 gram watch daily, it feels great on my wrist now

I am going against the grain here. Nice looking watch, but it looks too big on your wrist. Anyway, if you can get used to the heft, than I guess it's a keeper.

Excellent suggestion!
You know, I always wear watches 'low' like you noticed. I'll have to try wearing it higher up.
I also think the weight is taking a bit of getting used to because I *love* my Milgauss GV and I keep swapping back and forth.

It's not surprising to me to hear this with how thick the watch is. It does look great on your wrist but I predict this watch will not a be a daily wearer for many for this reason. It will be the kind of watch you can never forget you are wearing. JMO.

Well, the good thing John, is that since you payed MSRP for the watch, if you decide to sell it, you will not take any loss. Hec, you can probably sell it for more than you paid and make a small profit.
I kind of wondered if the new SD would be too top heavy and how it would fit. Would it flop around? Seems to me for the thickness of the watch, it actually coule be about 2mm larger in diameter.

Take a good look at the current market... Breitlings have been selling like crazy. Especially the big ones like 48mm. I have seen "small" elderly men wearing a Bentley. Looks rediculous... I have one myself and sometimes it is just too irritating to wear. Rolex had to hit this market. I think Rolex made a great watch here to keep customers loyal. I am waiting for mine to come in.

When I used to wear my Super Avenger (48mm) around (pre-hormone growth) Rolex owners they used to make fun of the Breitling brand due to their size. Look at Rolex now, only a couple years later. LOL.
I personally don't like the undersized dial with the oversized case.

I am 6'4 and 275 lbs., so naturally I got into the Breitlings and Panerai's. But, now my Rolex's get all the wrist time, and when I do put on one of my Super Avengers or Bentley it looks weird to me. I truly cannot wait until I get my DSSD. Congrats on the pickup, and enjoy Greece. The watch and scenery are truly magnificent!

Even with all titanium on the case and bracelet, my 45 mm x 18 mm Seahawk II Pro 3000 tends to make itself known on the wrist. It is FUN to wear a big, in your face watch, but you are aware of it.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/2002AudiS8/NewT100BallTriesteTritiumTubedWatch.jpg
Running contrary to that is my Rolex GMT Ceramic. Even though it is gold, and heavy in weight, the balance is so fine, that the watch disappears on my wrist. Most of the time that is good. But some of the time, it is more fun to have a "shock and awe" level watch on your wrist.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa73/2002AudiS8/DSC00319.jpg
By the way, would you mind measuring the actual dial size inside the REHAUT RING from 9 to 3??? I'm trying to find out whether the dial is actually bigger than on my GMT Master II C, or if they made the watch bigger, but not the dial. MUCH APPRECIATED IF YOU DON'T MIND.:joy::clap::cheers:

I agree with Skippy's suggestion of wearing it behind the wrist bone. Before I trained myself to do that, any watch over 34mm was annoying to me. Since I've started doing that several years ago, it allowed me to jump to my 36mm SMP, and now my 39 and 40mm Rollies. 40mm is upper limit for me and the caseback of the Submariner still sits higher than I would prefer, so that thickness is upper limit for me as well, although the GMT2C sits nicely.

While visiting WEMPE's the jewellers in Madrid, last week.
I was very fortunate to be shown a DSSD that was waiting to be collected by its new owner.
And though its a nice looking watch and extremely well built. Its just too big for my wrist and would probaly become to uncomfortable to wear on my small wrist.
So I shall no longer be getting one.
By the way this will of been the 3rd DSSD that WEMPE's in Madrid will have sold!!!!!!!!!!!
Has any been seen or sold in the UK?????

Looks good on you. As far as resale goes, I went to my AD in Texas and he said that when they get one in they are going to try to get 19k for the watch. I told them they are absolutely nuts because we're starting to see some flippers already so I don't think the watch will command a 10k premium. But if it does you are in good shape!

This watch is larger than most other watches but it doesn't look too big for your wrist. I agree, it's a bit heavy and kinda difficult to get use to but with time you will not notice it. You only feel that way now because your previous watch was probably smaller and lighter. I felt the same way coming from a Daytona to a Brietling GT. WOW what a difference in size and weight. The more I wore the GT the better it felt. Good Luck and give it some time.

Any chance of a photo against standard size model or explorer or gmt - I am intrigued by the relativity - eg new YM looks huge
Yours looks fantastic by the way - I have the puniest wrists ever so even the smallest can look large so that prob rules me out (not that they are easy to come by!!)

The DSSD is the replacement for the Sea Dweller.
They are changing the whole line of watches over the next few years. The Sub (WG and TG) and the Deep Sea Sea Dweller are the new ones this year. The GMT IIC was last year (I think??)
