A lovely gift. I had a Montblanc rollerball in the late 1980s. However, when I was visiting the ladies room at work it fell through a hole in my skirt pocket and was flushed down the toilet, never to be seen again. True story!

Montblanc makes a great pen - like Rolex (and any finely engineered and manufactured product) it takes a great beating and keeps working, and will be, after years and years, a still beautiful piece.

That is, unless you flush it down the toilet.:bartmoon:

My girlfriend, way before my wife came around, and I think I had another girlfriend in there too somewhere, gave me the bordeaux colored pen for B-day in 91/92?
so its 16/17 years old and 3 refills later ( i think) still going. I dont use it much anymore
since I stopped working and its a miracle I did not lose it.
She paid 88 dollars? back then and I thought that was crazy for a pen, I get them free in hotels. ....I would never pay that kind of money for one but some people think they are worth it.

I've had this Meisterstuck Ballpoint since 2003, and I've gone through plenty of refills along the way. I believe I paid $225.00 (I think they've since gone up in price), and for me it's been worth every penny. I always wanted one when I was younger, and I truly do love to write. No other pen I own writes as smoothly or feels so comfortable in my hand. I carry the Space Pen in the picture with me pretty much everywhere I go. It is extremely compact when closed, but expands into a full sized pen, and can write on just about any surface, from any angle. It's extremely convenient to have it. If you're looking at Montblancs, I would stay away from the rollerballs and fine liners, and go with a ballpoint instead for every day use.

I carry a gold plated space-pen as well. Really it's a good pen for all the reasons you cited, compact and doesn't poke a hole in my pocket.

I also have my grandfathers Schaeffer pens from the 1940's.. there is a robust pen collector community out there.

I've owned this one for about 2 years - Meisterstuck Solitaire Carbon Fiber Steel. Love the pen...it goes everywhere with me. I've always wanted a MB, but could never bring myself to buy one. I think the classic black are sweet...but I'm a sucker for carbon fiber & steel.

Looking back, I don't think I would pay this kind of $ again for the pen ($500+), but I'm glad I did it back then. It didn't feel like I was spending that kind of cash at the time due to the fact that I got HOT on a craps table in Vegas...in less than 20 mins I was up a little over $1K...when it ended, I walked. I bought my wife a new iPod she wanted and I got my MB - win/win (literally). Cheers.

I disagree. While I'll admit I baby my pen, I do remember the first week I owned it a friend borrowed it while signing something in my kitchen. Sure enough it went flying out of his hand and it was like a slow-motion car wreak as I watched it fall to the ground & bounce a few times off my ceramic tile floor. I was petrified it was going to be ruined...but sure enough, not a scratch or mark on it. That was my only real 'war story' with this MB, but it came through with flying colors (and that was no sissy drop by the way). Cheers.

Eric, I decided to take some more pictures of mine: the engraving on the clip and a hand shot, if such a thing exists for pens (similar to the wrist shot?)

Tools: I have that same burgundy generation, but mine has a nasty crack where you unscrew it to replace the ink. I don't care much for the pen because it only accepts fine liner or roller ball cartridges. I'm a much bigger fan of the ball point because of the smoother writing. If they made a cartridge that wrote like a bold needle point I would be all over it. So unfortunately this pen sees no use.

I don't care for MB pens. I think them the Cadillac Seville of the 70s. If you knew what crap they were, you wouldn't buy one. Respectful regards to all that disagree.

I have a few thousand in nice pens. The only ones I love right out of the box are the made by ST Dupont. That said, remember, we regulate watches and you also have to "regulate" pens -- adjust nibs. I live close to a nice pen shop, they have turned a scratchy, skipping brand new $400 piece of crap into a pleasure to use. Whatever you buy, don't be discouraged if you don't like the performance - adjust or change out the nib.

Edit: Two other points. 1) Rollerballs should be purchased by the style one appreciates. The pen is the case in this instance, not the pen like a "fountain pen." They are all the same in my view. 2) Not enamored by Parker either.

Sorry for not getting this up earlier, but here's a shot of all 17 of the Writers' Series ballpoints.

They are (left to right): Hemingway, Agatha Christie, Oscar Wilde, Voltaire, Alexandre Dumas, Dostoevsky, Edgar A. Poe, Marcel Proust (my favorite), Friedrich Schiller, Charles Dickens, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jules Verne, Franz Kafka (my least favorite) Miguel de Cervantes, Virginia Woolf, WIlliam Faulkner, and GeorgeBernard Shaw:

I have a half-dozen or so more Montblanc's, but the Writers' Series are the most fun to collect. The boxes they come in resemble books and would look really cool displayed on a shelf.

I had to get about five of them off e-bay, but the rest came from a great stationery store/Montblanc boutique here in Houston.

I like Pelikan pens but feel that Mont Blanc is in the same excellent league. Fine pens are like fine watches. Cheap ones do the job but don't give you the satisfaction of ownership or the joy of using a precision instrument.

Mont Blanc now has their name on a line of watches as well. Has anyone seen one of these?

I've always wanted a MB and I finally got one from an online vendor. It's a rollerball, Classic black and gold. Still use Pilot G2 07's for daily use.
Seems fine writing instruments and watches go well together.

I have a few (9 total), I prefer ball points and roller balls for daily carry, but have a couple of 149's in fine and extra fine for use at home and office. For me they have been robust and reliable. My oldest I bought new 30 years ago and it still finds its way into the rotation. My latest additions are the George Bernard Shaw fountain pen (fine point) and ball point. For those thinking about this pen I strongly urge you to do it. It is a fantastic pen, especially the fountain pen. I hear that Mont Blanc is raising prices October 1. (I think more reliable than the rolex price increase predictions)

I have one of the Fisher Space Pens like a few of the previous posters.

My Dad gave me a Mont Blanc ball-point in High School. I used it for about 5 years, but left it in the sleeve pocket of a flight suit which I washed, and never saw it again.

I guess with pens I am like those guys who question the need to spend a bunch of money on a Rolex when a Citizen or Casio will do. I get all of my pens free from vendors. I did spend a few dollars on Rotring mechanical pencils. I use a .9mm for day-to-day use, along with a blue ball point for signing stuff. I'm an IT guy, and a fancy pen seems like a lawyer type of accessory. I suppose if I had a nice one I'd change my tune.

At one time I used a .9 mm Cross pencil. Something went wrong with the mechanism, so I mailed it to Cross to have repaired or replaced under their lifetime warranty. They sent me a .7 mm replacement, along with a note that they no longer sold nor serviced .9 mm pencils.

Now I use a .9 mm plastic Pentel pencil, and my pen of choice is BIC.

Gentle reader,

2 Black Meisterstuck pens (one marked E Germany!) and 1 Black Meisterstuck pencil. The pen marked E Germany was purchased for $59.00 new on sale in the mid 1980's and cracked after a long nasty drop on a concrete plant floor. It cost $70.00 to repair at the Montblanc store at Lenox Square in Atlanta last month. The other pen and pencil were purchased for around $80.00 new in the early 1990's long before Montblanc decided to pull them from office stores and raise prices. I have all the original boxes as well. I also purchased a pen and pencil set for my father for $80.00 each in the early 1990's and one pen for my wife. I'm shocked they have "appreciated" in "value" so much in recent years but then I paid $150.00 for a blue Tudor Date Sub with Rolex Sub band 15 years ago and am shocked at what they bring now also.

Respectfully,

Mr. Manners

I bought her a Meisterstuck Legrande (161) Bordeaux (ballpoint) for our anniversary. The store gave me an extra refill and it's a good thing too because the ink refill in the pen was sporadic and I replaced it for her the next day.

I have a Meisterstück that I bought over 20 years ago but I write with another fountainpen. The other pen is 'the' Fischer Space Pen.

Not a huge fan of Mont Blanc..
Id rather spend less and buy a Pelican or spend a little more an buy an Omas.
Im not saying their pens are bad, but for the money, better can be had.

They certainly are a great pen, I just gave mine away to a friend who really loved the look and way it wrote but could not afford one, she loves using it.
As a collector I have to say that there are better made pens out ther for the money but that does not matter, there is something special about Mont Blanc, that is why a 149 is on the way for me:thumbsup:

If you want to go a bit left field and get a truly hand made pen though then look to the land of the rising sun!

There is a company in Japan that makes the most exquisit fountain pens, Nakaya.

It takes on average three months to make one of the Urushi pens, they are made of the old fountain pen material, Ebonite (a hard rubber) this is the material that was widely used at the birth of the fountain pen.

The barrels and cap are hand turned by one man on a lathe, the barrels are then sent to be hand lacquerd (The Urushi part) this can take three months or longer to complete, you can go from the very simple clean look like I have to hand painted designes to your specifications, some have fragments of abalone shell pressed into the finish to give the appearence of a starry night!

Each on has it's gold nib hand tuned to your writing style (the order form comes with a very detailed questionare on how you write and use your pens, from this they tune the nib to write specifically for you)

All of this comes at a starting point of $335 for the basic black, though I would highly recommend going for one of the Tamenuri finishes like I have that start at $460. This finish is spectacular and my photos do it not justice at all! In my example the first coat is red, this is then followed by many more coats of black (this lacquer is a natural resin from a tree) over a period of time the black becomes sligthy translucent so as to show the red underneath, it is like looking into a still pool, it really is stunning, the depth and the shine is something to behold. Oh yes, this pen is hands down the best writer I own as well!
Here is a link to their site
http://www.nakaya.org/eindex.html

Here are a couple of picture of my example, this is the Portable writer and is about the same size as a 149.
the pen and the exqusite hand made wooden box it comes in:

The nib in comparison to my MB and waterman:
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/ianmedium/Penreview005.jpg

My old trio (only the Nakaya now remains, I now have two vintage parkers, a vacumatic from 1945 and a duofold from 1928 as well as a conway stewart from 1955, a 149 will soon be joining this stable:thumbsup:)

While I like my bordeaux Meisterstuck Classique and think it's attractive, for me, it's not a practical writing instrument to use daily. It feels too big for my hands (maybe because I'm a female?) and it also feels heavy (hurts my tendonitis). Nonetheless, although I stick with my Pelikan pen for daily use, I wouldn't be without the M.B.

Latest purchase is the 2x 100 year historicals in the middle. The fountain pen is an excellent writer!

I have a MB Meisterstuck (the big one - Le Grande) and I love it. It's my second MB - I lost my first one in court when I was a very junior lawyer. I must have been feeling nervous and mislaid the pen with everything else that was going on.

Other great fountain pens to consider are Pelikan, Conway Stewart and Omas.

Watch and pen love ofen go together - not sure why. Perhaps they are both items you can employ to express a bit of individuality.

Anything is worth the money if you are willing to pay it! I loved my old MB and will love my new one when it comes, is it the best made pen I have? No. Does it have the highest quality materials? No the standard ranges precious resin is a joke in the pen collecting community, precious resin = plastic and you can get some very fine Pelikans at at least half the price with better build and plastic!

But that misses the point I think, there is something about them that makes you feel good, the nibs are very nice, again I have better nibs on other pens but it is still nice to use

I must say I prefer my hand made Nakaya in all ways over the MB but that does not stop me getting another!

Ha, ha...you sound just like me (until I bought my MB). I use to lose pens constantly and was somewhat hesitant to spend any amount of 'real money' on one for that reason...but as you can imagine, the minute you purchase I fine writing instrument, your mental aspect of keeping tabs on your pen instantly changes.

Pens remind me of sunglasses. For years I refused to buy a 'nice pair' because I was constantly losing or breaking my cheap glasses. But after I had Lasik done on my eyes in '99, I decided to bite the bullet and once and for all get some quality glasses. Sure enough, I still use those sun glasses on a daily basis and haven't lost them yet.

I also have MB Classique and Le Grand ballpoints. Surprisingly the ballpoints are pretty bad. They put out small blobs of ink on loopy parts of my handwriting and aren't the smoothest to write with. I've tried medium points and fine points and I've bought refills thinking that I just had a bad insert, but they were pretty much all the same. I can't believe they make such a great rollerballs and can't seem to get the ballpoint insert right.

I haven't tried any MB fountain pens, but I did recently get a Waterman Phileas fountain for $38 based on recommendations
at www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/

The Waterman writes like a dream. I have 2 Cross fountains and I never liked using them since they don't write very well or comfortably, but I now use the Waterman whenever I can.

I carry my MB with me as often as possible. It's nice to whip it out when signing a credit card bill in a restaurant or a store.

P.S. I like your choice in watches. I recently got my IIc also.

Latest acquisition - MB 75th Anniversary LE 149 F nib. Same to the standard 149 except the extra stone on the cap, and a 75th anniversary nib.
BTW, heard that MB has discontinued the British Racing Green ink. If you like this ink (I do), go stock it up. Currently this 149 has MB violet filled.

Funnily enough I was "given" a Montblanc pen when I bought my Yachtmaster. Five years ago I went into my local AD to get a pen for my girlfriend who had just finished her Masters degree at university. The manager knew I liked Rolexes and came up to deal with me personally. Whilst I was looking at pens he said that they had a YM in and if I bought it he'd give me any pen free of charge. I bought the YM and ended up with a £500 Montblanc for the gf.

They can be great writers - I don't think they have gotten to where they are by marketing alone although they do a great job of that. Sometimes you need to tweak the nib and there are a couple of people who can do this. I've heard that the results can be excellent. Do you use fountain pens at all?

I've got a Mont Blanc ballpoint somewhere but the Pelikan Souveran M800 that I use (their equivalent of a Meisterstuck 146) is the smoothest pen I have written with. There are many beautiful options out there.

It's funny though, this is what some people believe:"Mont Blanc, while quality pens, are declasse - too much of a vulgar class totem like Rolexs, BMWs, Louis Vuitton bags, etc."

I haven't used all these pens, but this is what I believe:

< $500USD: MB 149 (famous, large pen. Looks like a cigar)

$500 < $1000: MB Solitaire Doué Stainless Steel

$1000 < $2000: MB Writer's Edition, Agatha Christie

2careless
8 August 2009, 08:39 AM
Hmm if you want new then $500 can't quite buy a new 149. FPH has it at $570 so probably will have to search around e.g. in MB boutique sales.

I would say that for most high value fountain pens (>USD 500) once you ink it, the value drops by 40-50% on resale. So either buy it used and do use it, or buy it new and put it into the vault and wait for 10-20 years, or buy vintage (e.g. the safety simplo, 138, 136, 246 etc). There are a few LE models that had appreciated substantially e.g. Hemingway, Christie, Proust, Medici, Octavian, Prince Regent. However, by and large pens will never beat other investment classes.

I think only 100 made. It's not an official MB LE pen, rather, it originated from a MB boutique in US. All you get is a paper cert saying it's to commemorate the inauguration and the engraved pen. Serial number is the normal production numbers, box is normal 149 box.

I'm not so fond of Mont Blanc. The smaller series pens all have a plastic compression snap lid, that lets go after a time. I've ruined a few suits with them. Then the larger units (Le Grand) have threaded lids which I much prefer, but I don't like the 14 carat nibs; too hard although more durable. I've owned a couple of them but never use it anymore I understand that the old 149 was a great pen but that the newer ones are inferior. I've never owned either.

My favorite pens are Pelicans, the 800 series, in size similar to Le Grand. Threaded lids, plunger bodies, 18 carat nibs. I've had that pen for sixteen years, carry it all the time, and, from a writer's point of view, love it.

What model is it you have? A nib change wouldn't be too hard to fix. You could probably try to trade it. People, as far as I'm concerned, generally prefer the broad or the medium nib.

Can't speak for the fountain pens as all of my Montblancs are either ballpoints or rollerballs. I don't think anyone can make a serious argument that a Montblanc that costs $500.00 is five hundred times better that a $1.00 Office Depot special but, like wearing a Rolex, I can justify it in my mind and that's all that matters. I've also noticed that some of the Writers' Series pens have appreciated dramatically over the years.

Speaking of the Writers' Series, this year's pen - the Thomas Mann - is out and it is one of the best-looking models they've done in years.

Best,

If you goto the MB boutiques, they won't give discounts to walk-ins unless they are on sale (usually 10%) or going bust (which started to happen recently).
For b&m shops, try 10%-15% (you gotta ask :-). There are B&M shops with a big Internet front e.g. www.fountainpenhospital.com. You can get some pricing and they are usually 20% off. However, FPH is not supposed to sell you a pen in general production e.g. 149, 146 since you're from overseas. The shops here in Australia don't discount so I buy overseas from trusted dealers.
My belief is that the retailers get their stock from MB at 40-45% off retail price.

Yes, the Agatha Christie is really hard to find now. I remember that I had to buy the Hemingway and the Christie on E-bay to complete the Writers' Series and that was over ten years ago.

As an aside, I picked up my Thomas Mann today, making #18 in the series. I have them all in ballpoint, complete with the boxes, booklets, etc. I like the ballpoints because I agreee the pens were made to be used (kinda like Rolexes are made to be worn). I carry/use mine at work and I'm just not sure the fountain pens would hold up to the daily grind.

Best,
Skip

Yesterday I went buy a jewelry store that is closing and once carried MontBlanc pens(they sold out). They still had up the display materials and asked for and was given a clear acrylic cube for holding a MontBlanc pen. It looks pretty cool with my MontBlanc pen in it!!!

I'm expecting another delivery next week... One of the only 2 Writers edition that's based on the 149

As for the Thomas Mann, I'll buy when FPH starts discounting them.

The Agatha is my grail I simply loved the ballpoint version seen in the movie "The Ninth Gate" with Johnny Depp. Any of you guys see it in the movie too??

Stunning pen you got there! And the quality of those photographs are incredible. What camera are you using?

In fact, I recieved my second Montblanc today. A brand new (although, from 1997) MB 163. Complete with box and papers!. It is not a Writer's Edition model, but good enough for me.
