I was pursuing Jules Verne sets on Ebay until the recession.

Thanks!
I am a bit reluctant to buy from ebay - 1. not proficient enough to be able to distinguish fakes from reals on low def photos typical of ebay.
2. on sealed sets you don't even see the pens, rather have to trust the seller completely - or, is this customary for sealed sets?

If there are trusted ebay sellers please pm me :-)

Can one reasonably expect an official Montblanc dealer to discount if asked? If so by how much?

2careless
28 December 2008, 03:04 PM
If you're in Australia, Melbourne Pen Depot in Chadstone is doing their annual sale - this year only at 10% off, while previous years were 15% off. I have checked Taft, and other retailers - they don't discount Montblanc...
My belief is that dealers in US are not allowed to mail order or sell their pens overseas for current production models. However, it doesn't exclude you to get a feel on their discounts. e.g. www.fountainpenhospital.com. They'll email you their prices.

Just a humble suggestion, try a fountain pen with an oblique nib. This will improve the appearance of your handwriting in an astounding way. You can get a Pelikan FP with a OF nib for about 100 - 150 and I promise you it will inspire you to write.

You have to hold them at an angle, but the line variations and flare is just superb.

Might I also recommend the Fountain Pen Network which is a great forum that I have been a member of for some time now. Great people!!

I write better with a fountainpen....others can actually read what I wrote ... :chuckle:but a ballpoint is just much more practical for my work. The best ball point is the broad Mont Blanc refill.

Some really cool pens...keep 'em coming!

I have one MB and thinking about getting more into pens. I've seen this forum and wondering if you know of any others out there? Is this the best? Any specifically dedicated primarily to MB (like TRF)? How are the discussions regarding pens? I know I could just check them out...but I'm a lazy man and don't want to waste my time trying to determine if the pen forums are decent and worth spending some time in. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

I like the burgundy colour - is this easily available? Only saw black at the AD.

Went into the MB AD in Sydney to have a look. Know jack about pens, the lady there was quite helpful but no discounts unfortunately.

I also have several questions to ask you gents:

1) Out of the fountain pen, rollerball and ballpoint which one would be best for everyday use?

2) How often do you actually use a fountain pen? Is it more of a collecting thing than a practical object?

I did like the feel and flow of the rollerball - the one using fountain pen ink, felt classy. Ballpoint felt like any other pen.

I also enquired and was told the same thing - bordeaux/burgundy colour was discontinued in 2001.

Would you please let me know (PM if you like) where you can still buy these from?

And would you say a rollerball or ballpoint is better for everyday use?

I guess you misunderstood my post (granted, I'll admit my post was pretty pointless). I was merely commenting (in a joking manner) about the fact that a personal statement was made regarding the history of the pen but the sentence ended with a question mark. Kind of like me introducing myself at a party by saying, "Hello, my name is Moby33?"

:chuckle: It's been ages since I asked if I could post my non Mont Blanc pens! So! Here we are...

Currently I don't own any pens that are not made by David Oscarson. He is well known for creating very artistic, beautiful pens, out of all natural materials (in the style of Faberge, which has inspired all of his work, including the outside which is all multiple layers of brilliant glass enamel). Each of the pens are made out of solid 18kt Gold, and manufactured completely just outside of London England. He has been featured in the Robb Report 2 years in a row, which made us all proud :chuckle:. He's a very friendly guy, I've had the chance to have dinner with him here in Vancouver. Currently I own pens from 7 of the 11 limited edition (usually out of 88 or 128) collections that he has made, but I have a couple more on order! I've included the link to the photos on my Flickr account, if you're bored enough, you can read about them... or you can read the same at www.davidoscarson.com :dummy:

:chuckle: It's easy to get addicted to his work, that's for sure. Everyone who I've shown them to has ended up buying multiple pens :dummy: The nice thing is you can *usually* pick your number if you have a special day, year, etc, and the pen is not made until you order it. Prices have gone up in Canada to about $6000 each but in the USA they are still around a very reasonable $4500 (when you look at the materials, workmanship, etc).

I have had a Bordeaux pen for 17 years?....looked for a Bordeaux rollerball a few years back and was told they are no longer made and would have to look for one on ebay....where did you find it?

I also enquired and was told the same thing - bordeaux/burgundy colour was discontinued in 2001.

Would you please let me know (PM if you like) where you can still buy these from?

And would you say a rollerball or ballpoint is better for everyday use?

Sorry it took a few days to respond. I popped into the store (former AD) where I bought these Bordeaux colored Montblanc pens to see if there were any more. There are. There is one rollerball and one ballpoint and several different LeGrand, all in the Bordeaux color. They even have a mechanical pencil  but I asked them to hide it in the back because I want that one for myself someday.
While I was there I also found that they still have a very nice (IMO) Root Beer GMT on a jubilee bracelet. :lov:

PM me for store details if you're interested.

I have a stainless steel Mont Blanc which I believe is 15 to 20 years old. It was my father's pen and have put away for safe keeping. I did take it to a Mont Blanc store but they were not familiar with the model!!! I also own a Meisterstuck and use it everyday.

I own the Meisterstuck ballpoint in bordeaux. My understanding is that although the bordeaux has been d/c'd, some stationary stores might still have inventory. (You might try Altman's, Joon's, Fountain Pen Hospital and Art Brown, all of which are based in and around Manhattan.)

The Oscarson's are nice, but bring on the vintage Montblancs.

Hemingway's and Agatha Christi's are always appreciated!

What is a good starter pen? Brand, type, etc. for everyday use.

Thanks

Hemingway's and Agatha Christi's are always appreciated!

Hmm, Hemingway's are getting more and more expensive nowadays, in the vicinity of like USD2500 or so for a good mint example.

Christie... I see that one can get replica clips... be very very careful about them.

I'd love to get a Hemingway or Christie or Proust, budget permitting, even a Dumas or Fitzgerald would be nice

Currently waiting for a Verne and Dostoevsky BP delivery. Can't wait

Don't have any MB's, but do enjoy my Sailor's and Conklin's. There's something timeless about writing a letter with a FP.
