Your favourite FEATURE in a watch...

Hi guys,

What would you consider the best and your most favourite feature in a watch?

Personally, I would love each and every watch to have the 3185 movement of the GMT-II and Exp-II wherein the small, hour hand can be moved independently.

Just think of the convenience, not only whilst travelling, but also during change over with the start and end of daylight savings.

What's your favourite feature?

My favorite would simply be the hacking feature. It used to come in handy when I was time anal. Never check anymore, but I like the seconds to stop while I set the watch. :thumbsup:

Fair point, Daren, but you do realise that virtually all modern day watches already incorporate this feature.

Yes I know this, but that is why I like modern watches. I really would not worry about it on a manual wind, but on autos that is an important feature. Hey MONKEY, you asked for my favorite and I told you. :chuckle:

I love the moon-phase indicator. I think it's a very classic item (although not particularly useful, except for planning full moon dinners with the wife) that completes the look in a dressier watch. After I bought my Rolex, a watch with this complication was next on my list!

As an aside, I plan to post a review of my Master Moon sometime soon. :thumbsup:

Thanks, Al. Another feature I really like is the Power Reserve indicator thingy. Wish Rolex would come up with such a model.

I like watches with simple, classic looks. There's no particular mechanical feature that I want in every watch. That's why I like having a wide variety of watches. But I know that one thing I consistently AVOID in watches is much embelishment.

While, unlike Peter, I love complication watches, I find that I hardly ever use the chrono feature, which at this point I only have on quartz watches. The only time I use the chrono is when we walk for exercise and when I sit on the beach, to know when to turn over. I do like the RC capability of one of my Casios - that's how I set the time of all my other watches. All my Casios have memory to store phone numbers, etc. That's a great feature which comes in handy when you need to get to your passport and other numbers quickly. As for other complications, I like the multiple time zone feature on my GP ww.tc and JLC Master Geo.

But the features I like best are those on my GMT-II: the ability to change the hour hand quickly and independently of the minutes and seconds, and the 24 hour hand that lets me keep my watch set to home time when I travel.

Ooh, tough one to pick. My non-hacking Seiko Diver's definitely makes me appreciate the hacking on my SD and DJ, and with the travelling I'm doing these days, I've really got the GMT on my mind.

Tell you what I'd LIKE to see, though - a flyback hacking function that brings the second hand to the zero position when you pull the crown out.

Don't mean to pick nits here but there's a good number of movements that don't have a stop-seconds feature.

Most F. Piguet and Lemania movements (used by a number of brands) and a good number of proprietary movements, like a lot of JLC and Zenith engines, don't hack.

Seriously... I do like the hacking but the quickset is the nicest feature of the 3185 movement. Since mine has been running non-stop for over 30 months now, the quickset comes in handly only when changing to daylight savngs time, although if I want the 4th hand to keep up, the quickset becomes moot.

Hmmmm....you got a good point there. I've never had a watch without a centre sweep. I think I'd feel naked without it!! :chuckle:

I've got one watch like that. It's an old (1963 vintage) Corum gold dress watch. Very plain, no luminova, manual wind, just two hands and a stick dial. It's a beautiful dress watch, but I don't wear it any longer. For me, it's just too simple. It's the only watch I own that has no complications at all. All my others have at least a date function. Many have much more. But I would never get rid of it. I inherited it from my stepfather 38 years ago. It has a lot of sentimental value, if nothing else.

For dress, I wear my YG DD, for semi-dress (suit), I wear one of my DJs and for everyday, well, we all know which one that is. :agree: Mainly because I like the complications of these watches.

Real simple features I like in a watch are good lume and water resistance.Probably a hang up from being in the Army doing many things in the dark and treating the watch as equipment. :boring:
