I am in the market for a good writing utensil, what do you suggest I get? I would be in the market for something that looks good and is durable enough for daily usage in the office and out in the field (Real Estate market)......
So what do you suggest?

I have the Montblanc Meisterstucks, the small ones ("Classique", I think is the style), in black resin and platinum. I have the ballpoint with twist mechanism and the rollerball which you remove the pen cap and can place it on the other end while you are writing.
The ballpoint is very convenient to use on-the-go, you just twist a little and the tip comes out, like on a Cross pen. The rollerball, which writes incredibly smoothly and effortlessly, and makes my handwriting look better for some reason, is less convenient, but it is more elegent to use since you can remove the cap with a flourish before you write like it's a fountain pen. That might be good to use on your clients when they are signing an offer or an acceptance.

Wow. Where did you get that? I thought the only resin color was black.
Now if you only had a GMT Coke in the picture instead of the black bezel!

Montblanc Starwalker is about the coolest pen I own, among a bunch of Meisterstucks, all rollerball.

Bordeaux is no longer available. My (former) AD still has some left. I bought a rollerball and a matching LeGrande ballpoint for my wife. I'm saving for the mechanical pencil for myself.

What's the type of pen you want to use? fountain pen, ball pen, rollerball or pencil?
Majority of people will opt for ballpen or rollerball - as they are the most convenient ones. If you want to write with style, fountain pens - you can have so many different coloured inks, as well as different pen nibs to show your penmanship.
When it comes to pens, the equivalent to Rolex is Montblanc, and there are several good Italian brands (or craftmen) e.g. Montegrappa that are equivalent to Patek in the watch world.
So far the quintessential equivalent of Rolex sub is Montblanc 149 pen - i.e. the cigar fountain pen. It's big, fat and nobody would have missed it. However, I personally like platinum (149 only comes in gold) so I would have gone for the 146 Le Grand, which looks more modest.
If you want to pay for more exotic pens, MB's Writers' series limited edition pens are pretty good too. Good examples of pens like the 1992 Agatha Christie and 1991 Hemingway's command very high resale prices (aren't the case for later LE pens though). Of course, the next higher up collection is the Patron of the Arts series and they are like $3-4k for the pen.
As for definitive source of pens - Fountain Pen Hospital http://www.fountainpenhospital.com in NYC.
Below is my meagre collection of the Writer's series. (From left - Schiller BP, Wilde MP, Verne FP, BP, MP, Dickens BP, Dostoevsky FP, MP, BP, Cervantes BP, Dumas BP). If anyone is selling a Dostoevsky rollerball, I'd be very interested.

Wow, I thought a $8000 watch was extravagant. $11,000 + for a pen is a bit steep

I am a big fan of David Oscarson pens, they are all done in the style of Faberge (brilliant glass enamel, 18 or so layers of it!) made out of all natural materials (18kt Gold, and other gems & jewels). They are all limited edition, usually out of 88 or 128! He has been featured in the Robb Report a couple of years in a row for being the best of the best! I have met him personally and he is a very nice man who is as obsessed with pens as we are watches :chuckle: Each pen is hand-made in London, England. I consider them more art than pen, but, they work just as well :chuckle: Here are a couple of mine...

Mont Blanc is nice but getting pretty pricy for a plastic pen, refills are getting expensive too. For a nice pen that writes well and you won't be upset if you lose it is a Parker. Nice pens and refills are not so expansive that you won't want to write with it. Mont Blancs, especially the roller balls go thru ink pretty fast.

If you do decide, PM me and I'll see what I can do. The jewelry store which is closing is a Bailey, Banks and Biddle. But they are only reducing prices at the selected stores they are closing. The retail on the Meisterstuck rollerball is I believe $375.00 and they are taking 30% off and then another 10% off the reduced price!!!

I really like Cartier. I've used a Cartier Diabolo rollerball for the past 15 years. I'm shocked I haven't lost it yet! Fountain pens have to be refilled often so that makes them less practical for everyday use; ball pens are just dead common (in a UK sense of the word). I'm fond of the Cartier Pasha too. Pelikan makes a beautiful line of pens as well. I'm not fond of Montblanc since they seem to be in every mall luggage shop. In addition to learning not to lose your fine pen you have to be careful letting others borrow it. Even if they return it, many people don't know how to unscrew a cap on a fine pen. People try to just pull the cap off or push the cap back on. That drives pen nuts like myself mad!

On the roller ball, NEVER put the cap on the end of th pen. It was not designed to go there & you can split the resin very easily:thumbsdow

Talking about the caps on the top of pens, I recently got a new car, the salesman had a Mont Blanc roller ball, when handing me the pen to sign, he always kept the top in his hand, I lightheartedly pointed this out to him, asking him if he was worried that someone would walk out with his pen, he replied "That it was the first thing he was taught at the dealership" Ill have to remember that.

I use my MB Rollerball at work. The first couple times, I just handed the whole pen to my client & dang near keeled over in panic when they try to jam the cap back on the end.
So Now, I hold the cap in my hand while they sign & then take the pen back.
I use the pencil at work all the time. I never let it out of my sight, but occassionally one of the partner comes in & will grab it to jot something down. Every FREAKING time he just tossed back onto the desk. If I told him it cost $300 he would crap, but if he breaks it, he's buying me a new one.

or you could go for an incredible brand from Japan called Nakaya
http://www.nakaya.org/eindex.html
You can get them in the US from this fellow in LA
http://www.nibs.com/
I own the portable writer, knocks the socks of any MB ( I own 3 MB'S by the way!), totaly hand made but a small team of artisans, takes around three months to hand laquer the finish and has in fountain pen circles one of the finest nibs avalible.
Either route you go you will end up with a pen tuned to your writing style, incredible, I cannot recommend them highly enough. Plus, so exclusive, you will not see many around apart from in the hands of experienced fountain pen enthusiasts
The portable writer is in between a 146 and 149 in size. I would recommend the finish I have, Kuro tame-nuri, it looks almost black but has an undercoat of red urushi ( the natural lacquer used in the finish, the body is ebonite as opposed to the plastic in an MB)
here is a picture of it next to my Cockpit

I have a Montblanc which was my father's pen. It is 20 years old or so and is made of stainless steel. It will take a rollerball or ballpoint refill. I have thought about finding out how much it's worth but how would you go about finding out?

Frankie - I had a 149 and I got rid of it because I didnt use it enough. For everyday writing, it was too bulky. I would definately go for the Classique, and as for BP, RB, or Fountain, thats all personal prefrence. If you really want a daily writer, the MB Classique is the best.

While maybe it's true that the practice is not the best for the pen, I can vouch for jamming the hell out of the cap onto the end for years with zero issues.
My only MB is the carbon fiber model shown in early pictures, so maybe that's a lot tougher as it's a CF cap vs. resin & obviously the rest of the pen is stainless steel...so no worries w/ the metals strength...but again, no issues from me & I use the pen multiple times every day.
Personally, I don't like the feel of the pen without the cap on the back...seems too short & light IMO (I get flashbacks to writing w/ one of those mini space pens as a kid). :thumbsdow
