View Full Version : Melbourne: Raising a pint for the Queen! 13 June
Gedanken

Seeing as how we're having a long weekend on account of the Queen's birthday on 8 June, I'd like to propose a Melbourne GTG on the evening of Friday 5 June, what with it being poet's day and all too.
Steve, Gerry and I were throwing some ideas about the other day, and one place that came up was Cumulus Inc: http://www.cumulusinc.com.au
Their wagyu bresaola's killer, and so's their cassoulet. They've also got a magnificent roasted lamb shoulder that's big enough for four people.
Anyway, Cumulus only takes bookings for eight or more people, so let's get the numbers up!

You see, Peter, the problem is that Sydney's just too much of a quiet country town for you guys to keep up with us Melburnians. :bartmoon: We party animals have absolutely no problem with getting together on the 5th and the 13th.
I do believe that the Press Club is on the cards at some point, so we could hook up there when you're in town.

How many birthdays does the Queen celebrate in a year?
In NZ, we have Monday the 1st June off and that's been marked down as Queen's birthday!! :chuckle:

Actually the 13th works well for me, but I can't do both really, as I do now have another private engagement for the 5th June.
So if the consensus is the 13th June is the way to go then that would be great, especially if we are going to host a blow in from out of town :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Question for you Melburnians, Saw a good deal for accommodation on wotif mystery hotel, the description states its a 5 star hotel in the CBD and has just undergone a 40 million dollar renovation. Any ideas as to which hotel it might be?
Oscar
28 May 2009, 06:59 PM
Pete,
Both hotels you mentioned are great. I have stayed at the Grand Hyatt many times with the wife. It has recently completed some major refurbishments. They spent millions.
The Park Hyatt is sort of up the road a bit, whereas the Grand is sort of more central Melboune.
Just my opinion.

Uhh, guys. we've hit a bit of a snag. I called to make reservations at Cumulus, and while they can take the reservation, I didn't realise that it's a fixed menu for reservations (tapas is only for walk-in customers) at $70 a head, and they want a deposit of $20 per person upfront.
Now if everybody's cool with this I can make the reservation, but I'll need everyone to commit since there's cash involved.
Alternatively, there's a place called Steakhouse at Docklands. The steaks are good (Kai's been there too) and the prices are decent: http://www.steakhouse.net.au/newquay/newquay.htm
Whaddaya say, guys?

Yeah, I was a bit taken aback by Cumulus' inflexibility. Personally I'm happy to go for a nice ribeye at Steakhouse and unless there's any violent objections let's shift the game plan that way. I'll wait 24 hours before calling either place and making reservations.

Nah, don't get me wrong, Michael - I'm just having a whinge about this deposit system that more and more restaurants seem to be having these days. I doubt they'll refuse to redistribute the deposit, and if they do I'll just tell them I'll cancel the whole booking - it'll be their choice whether they want to make a couple of hundred bucks or blow it all for a little bureaucratic BS and I'm fairly certain who'll blink first. You just take it easy and rest up.

James, thank you for organising this GTG. It was a fantastic gathering. The food was excellent, while the restaurant itself needs to improve on customer service and their pricing transparency :dummy:
Also, very happy to meet Peter and Deanne, Carla, and Brandon. Hope to see you all again next time.
