Greetings,
I'm new to the world of Rolex but am looking at picking up one in the forseeable future as a little birthday treat for myself.

Just a quick question if I may: How does a Datejust 1601 fit into the scheme of things? I personally like the look of it but not sure if I would be better holding off until I can put some more money together.

Any advice/thoughts/etc most appreciated.

From one Pete to another welcome to TRF well I would say it all down to personal choice.The DJ have a fine range with many dial options,take a trip to your local AD try a few on.Try a few of the sports watches ask plenty of questions but the one that smiles back at you on your wrist,then thats the one for you good luck in your hunting.Now regarding the 1601 thats quite a vintage piece from the late 50s early 60s and uses a low beat cal 1565 now IMHO the 15 series movement were the best that Rolex ever made.The only downside now is parts availability,but movements are quite bullet proof and can be repaired by most competent watchmakers You can check most of the Rolex range at.http://www.rolex.com/en/

And as for which to get, Padi has it right. Go for the one that gives you the biggest smile, especially for your first one. After that, it will just be a matter of adding to your collection. Good hunting and keep us posted on what you finally bag. :cheers: :cheers: :clap: :clap:

Just to add on to Padi's point, for a watch that age, I would actually recommend looking up Phil Gore at Ferntree Gully Watches (www.ftgwatch.com.au). That guy's very careful and does fantastic work (I've had my fiancee's grandmother's watch serviced by him), and he knows his Rollies inside-out and will have absolutely no problem servicing the movement.

There are a couple more watchmakers in Melbourne, but Lol-x was telling me that the guy Antiquorum uses can be pretty rough on dials, and there's another fellow in Glen Waverley I know who's a bit on the diodgy side, so I would recommend avoiding both of them.

The only thing is that he doesn't have pressure-testing equipment, and you might have to source out some seals because he doesn't have a parts account with Rolex. However, if you're not planning on diving with that 1601, he's definitely the man!
