I have to admit that this is one of those treats you just don't get everyday, but the truth is... it is. Vintage is the way to go if you simply cannot satisfy the Rolex Hunger. My favourite Vintage models have got to be the 5508's. I just can't keep my eyes off of them. What's your favourite vintage model? No reason is required, I just wanna know what you like when it comes to vintage:clap:

I like the vintage DateJusts.
Lots of variations in markers and hands and those pie pan dials...
Personally, modern can't hold a candle.
I have to say that may favorite vintage piece is a 1680, but any vintage Sub will do!

Yes, still looking. There are a lot of 1655's about but they seem to have issues with dials, cases, crownguards etc.
I can't believe how many 1655's I've come across where the crown guards have been polished unevenly. :banghead:
Anyway, I've saved my money so it is not a real problem.

yeah all things being equal my list goes by personal prefence, if we're talking cost then a paul newman daytona or a comex sub would have to be first on my list because of their overall value, Mark rvan and Pav listed my grails, but as far as desire alone this would be the order of my dream pieces:

oh boy!
there are so many great vintage models to choose from that its very hard to narrow it down to one..
I love all non-crown guard model subs and gmt's..the 6542 gmt is just a super-classic~
of course the 6538,6536 etc.. these watches are just icons of the NCG world!
then of course I also love the 1655 and 1665
and then there is the slightly small on me 6202 tog..which would be a favorite if it where a little bigger on me..
I would say the main reason I love vintage rolex is that anyone can go buy a Rolex..
but how many people are going to own the same model as you if its 30 years old!!!
not many..

30 July 2009, 08:09 PM
I still love my 6534...it's nothing special and probably something nobody else would choose but it was my grandfather's and it's a part of my family history and what got my father and I into Rolex watches.
I'm also a bit partial to some of the older subs and gmts.

Just about any black face Sub; dateless is perferable, Maxi dial too. Matte. Gloss face and white-gold trim characters on my 5513 are okay, maybe a bit too precious for my taste, but I do like my watch. Were I prone to envy, I could get envious of that grouping just above me! Except for the Daytona. I admire it, and that's a very handsome Daytona, but I prefer the simple, straightforward, businesslike face of the Sub.

My favorite is not the most expensive or the most sought after but its my favorite. The Rolex Gmt 16750.It has to be because having owned most all of them at 1 time or another I keep going back to it.My 2nd favorite if you can have 2 was my 1970 root beer GMT on a 2 tone rivited bracelet. I have never seen another 1 and it was faded, well worn, and unique. Not everybody and there brother had 1.
I miss that 1.

I like my 16750, but usually prefer to wear a no-date Submariner or Explorer. On these cleaner dials, I find it much easier to tell the time at a glance.
Here's my 16750 though:

I saw not one, but two Rolex in the wild today--one, a GMT circa 1980 just back from service that was stunning, the other, a Milgauss 116400-V. You know what? They were both show stoppers. Absolutely beautiful. Forced to choose, I couldn't.
It's all in the eye.

Well lobo 58, here's a 66 GMT just back from servicing by Rolex in Melbourne. The total cost was $1700 US/$2050 AU, a lot, but included a new bracelet, bezel + insert and hands with all the other bits needed. The Brisbane dealer was very helpful, the watch came back early, and under estimate,[a first for anything in my experience!] as apparently the balance wheel had plenty of life left. To me it looks brand new, only the slight marks where the old design of bracelet rubbed under the lugs and of course the serial number telling me it isn't. I now have its' authenticity checked, not that I am looking to sell it. I'm no photographer, also, my ISP is a bit erratic, but here goes. I have never kept it original, merely changed the bits I thought would improve it for me as a tool watch. Wasn't the interest in them in the old days, a different story now!

Personally my favourite is the acrylic crystal GMT series - either the 1675 or the 16750. Hard to choose between the two - the 1675 has the runs on the board, but the 16750 has the advantage of the newer 3xxx calibre movement and quickset date...
