Hi guys.
I have an older 73-74 Rolex.
I would like to insure or mabye sell my watch and need to get a price evaluation , but the certfied dealer i Norway coulden,t help me with this. They said i would have to send my watch to Geneva (accidentaly where I was born)....
I prefere not to send my watch by post.

Is there any other way to have this done?
(I dont have the original papers for it.)

Thanks,
Mem

Post detailed pics of the watch. What kind of rolex is it? Also, if possible, post pics with the case back open.

Pics will certainly help, also you may want to try another AD (Authorised Rolex Dealer)

If that is a genuine Comex 5514 then it could be worth quite some money.

I don't think your AD would have an idea about that as this would be a collectors watch.

There is no Comex on the dial but from I read here http://doubleredseadweller.com/comex_5514.htm the early ones did not all have Comex on the dial only on the caseback with the three digit serial no. at 6 o'clock as yours has.

I guess someone else will be along shortly with more info. I advise until you know if this is genuine or not do not sell or change anything about the watch.

Oh Its real,
but I would like to get some papers that verifies it.

Unfortunatly Its not in its original condition as I had it serviced at the AD. They changed the Bezel, and the original glass. but Im glad to say I have all the parts they removed.

I tried to post some pics of the original parts but Im vaiting for the "moderator" to accept my posting (or so a message said)

I would really be more comfortable if Iinsured the watch, but no one can tell me what its worth so Its a bit of a problem for me...

Don't lose those original parts! You are lucky they did not touch the dial. Your RSC (Rolex service center) should have provided you with a service receipt and it should be noted on there the model of your watch ie Comex 5514; this will help build some provenance.

There must be some vintage watch shops in Norway I would have thought, maybe they can provide a valuation, if not Norway then somewhere else in Europe. It is a very collectible watch so only specialist dealers will be able to properly value IMO.

Not much else I can help you with from down here I am afraid, you might get some more responses once the guys in the US wake up. nice watch:thumbsup:

That is a very rare piece (as you probably know).

Some AD's will give you a valuation, some will not.

My suggestion is to take it to a reputable dealer of vintage Rolex in your country, Norway and get him to do a written valuation. Surely the insurance company could rely on that valuation, as long as it is from a reputable vintage dealer (not authorised Rolex) and printed on the dealer's letterhead.

Welcome and

I think the first thing I would do is have the watch verified with known COMEX collectors. Much information on these pieces is held close to the vest(with good reason).

They can point you in the right direction to have the watch serviced (RSC) and properly documented and verified.

It might involve a bit of an expense, but in the end could prove well worth it.

Reputable dealer........easyer said than done. I have never seen a dealer i Norway who specialises in vintage or collectable watches.

I just talked to my insurance company and they also told me that they would not accept a statemant from people or shops abroad......:dummy:

Please let me know if you hear of anyone in Norway who might be able to evaluate my cool comex:thumbsup:

You will have to bite the bullet and get it back to Rolex HQ for appraisal and the gentlest of movement cleaning if necessary.

It will make the difference between a big question mark and a watch that's worth a heck of a lot of money.

Since you are not looking to sell, just to value it properly, the starting point has to be official authentication.

There have been PLENTY of experts burned by dealings in the rarest Rolex market and if anyone out there wishes to contact this person with offers then you do so at your own risk. Don't go starting a thread here about your woes as you'll get no sympathy from me.

I'm realy hoping I dont have to go back. I asked the guy who did the service it 5 years ago or so and he hadent even noticed the comex stamp and had absolutly no clue.....

First of all there is no question mark: My father gave it to me, and you can guess which company he worked for when he got it.....
Second I'm simply trying to get it verified by someone and get a best guess price...initially for insurance purposes. No need to imply that I might be dishonest........yet anyway... though I understand why.........

MemErr buddy Mem...welcome to The Rolex Forum(TRF)...

Orchi was traveling to Norway about a couple of weeks ago...n Orchi missed the opportunity to know this watch earlier...:banghead:

Potentially...you are in possession of an EXTREMELY RARE...yet ILLUSIVE COMEX Diver watch Ref 5514.

IF so...it's EXTREMELY HIGHLY...prized.

You could be holding...possibly a watch which may be worth for EUR50,000...
OR MORE or less...:cheers::cheers::cheers:

good !
if the back is loose, check the inside for the case number that should be engraved...

Just my opinion but I was under the impression that all Rolex service centers have access to "the Rolex database". Sydney RSC certainly does for tracking prior service work and also for checking for stolen watches. Any RSC can certainly verify the authenticity of a Rolex. They can certainly contact Geneva to validate the Comex connection. I am not talking about an AD I am talking about a RSC.

For valuation purposes Rolex probably will not be able to assist as they are not in the second hand market. For valuation my advise would be Christies in London as this is the sort of watch that they would typically sell.

I just talked to my insurance company and they also told me that they would not accept a statemant from people or shops abroad......:dummy:
I think they will accept a valuation from Christies.

keep us posted.

WOW!!! that is definitely destined to be a family heirloom...
congratulations on such a wonderfully historical time piece!!!

to the experts... would it be a good idea to have this particular specimen polished/restored to it's original glory? or would it be wiser to leave it in it's current condition?

snow_rocks
5 July 2009, 10:57 PM
Leave in current condition. Walk the watch into a Rolex Service Center for an appraisal and evaluation. Not expensive compared to what this watch could be worth.
