ive been wanting to buy a vintage rolex for a while. thus my 1st post here.
excuse my dumb questions.:chuckle:
i want to expand my knowledge of 30s and 40s pieces.do all watches from this period have a serial # ?

The Oyster case serial numbers from this period are usually on the outside of the case back. By the later '40s, they are engraved between the lugs at 6:00. SNs are usually not found in certain watches cased locally (these are invariably non-Oyster cases).

For instance, the case back of the watch in my avatar looks like this:

Note the case SN (dating it to about 1938) above the case reference number.

are there any serials on the inside back ????
i saw a watch with a 4 digit number there but no other number anywhere

No. In the early '40s the case reference number began to be engraved on the inner case back, but the SN remained on the outer case back, before they placed it between the lugs at 6:00.
