Hello to all. I am new to this forum and this is my 1st thread. I want to buy a Rolex, but I could not find it in any dealer in Uruguay (where I live). I will probably buy it in US. My favorite Rolex (since I was a kid) was a watch that my grandfather had. Datejust model 1601 year 1970 with jubilee. Searching in the internet I saw a very similar model, but I could not find anywhere what is the difference with the 1601. It is very similar. It´s the DJ model#16030. Please see the picture below. Can somebody explain me the difference between these 2 watches? Thank you very much.

The 1601 is an earlier model DateJust than the 16030.

The movement in the 1601 is a calibre: 1575 and the 16030 is I believe a calibre: 3035.

The 1601 does not have a quickset date but the 16030 does.
The dial on the 1601 is called a 'piepan' dial as it has a 1-2mm beveled edge on the dial. On the other hand the 16030 has no edge and the surface of the dial is uniform around the edge (perimeter).

Both are 36mm wide cases and both have a plexiglass crystal.

I personally prefer the 1601

for the 1601, the '1' indicates the traditional rolex 'fluted' bezel... for the 16030, the '3' indicates the 'ribbed' bezel in your photo... also, the 160X series will have a plexi crystal and the more recent models will use synthetic saphire... btw, i also prefer the vintage pieces.

1601 will carry a solid gold fluted bezel. Like in Swatty's picture.

The 16030 has the machined bezel in Stainless Steel. Here is a close up of the one on my 1603.

See the difference between the two bezels?

Don't let anyone tell you a machined bezel is made out of gold.

Thank you very much everybody. For the responses, explanations and pictures. All beauties btw. I am still trying to find one for me. The problem is that they are expensive in Argentina. I am travelling to Florida in September, so maybe I will try to find one over there, or buy it in ebay. The problem is that it is not a very good idea to buy a Rolex without knowing the seller. If somebody knows a good 1601 deal/watch please let me know. Thank you again. Kind regards. Federico

Gracias! Abrazo

Am sure some of the sellers listed in the sticky above would be able to source and ship you one. Post pics if you find something interesting and the guys here can help you judge for originality, etc. All the best with the hunt.

I find my slo-set date to be pretty annoying on my 1601/1603. I would get the quick set if the price was close.

Hola Federico! Bienvenido a bordo! Espero que disfrutes mucho de este Foro!

Hello! Welcome aboard! I wish you´ll enjoy this Forum.

What!! You got your Rolex stolen in Buenos Aires?? How comes that!!

I guess many Rolex owners (included the suscriber) can tell you some hair raising experience with their watches being taken here!!

That´s a sad present malady, specially with Rolex brand.:banghead:

I wish you can get the Date Just you are looking for.

Remember that high local prices of brand new watches, are due to high import taxes plus an additional tax to luxury items.

Best cordial regards, Abel.

I found this old thread, and I am also learning on vintage DJ.

Both are stainless steel 316L based, acrylic crystal, 3053 movement, quickset, comes with either jubilee or oyster bracelet at the AD when purchased. Numerous variation on dial choices, if lumed its tritium.

16013 is Rolesor (14k or 18k after 1982)
16030 is ss engine tined bezel.

Can some one confirm for me please?
I'm new to vintages and have been reading on these.

I also have a question on bracelet fitments. Is jubilee or oyster decided upon purchase, the AD fits it there on the spot? Are they listed on the papers?

Are these cases the same on the 1601, 16013, 16030 ect. Will a 3135 movement work in other cases ???

No. None of those cases will accept a 3135.

1601 takes only a 15xx movement.

16030 takes only 3035 movement.

All are different specs.

Would a bracelet from a 16030 work on a 1603? I have a 1603 from '59 that I would like to get a new bracelet for.

I like these, https://www.everestbands.com/collections/datejust, but it says they are for the 16xxx series watches.

Thanks guys!
