Question about panerais

Why is it that the bracelet/bracelet models get overlooked so often?

I know that with panerais its all about the straps, but the bracelet is soooooooooooooo nice. I have recently been graced with a wonderful 40mm bracelet model chrono which I found absolutely fabulous. My friend didnt know much about it (he bought it because he liked it) but after asking around my friend Laurance was able to tell me that it actually had a great JLC movt in it.

Good point, Roger. Personally I love the Panerai ONLY on its original SS/Ti bracelet!! :thumbsup:

They make a great bracelet quite expensive to buy separate,but myself prefer Panerai on leather.

I don't claim to be an expert but I believe 40mm Panerai chronos use either a valioux 7753 or a zenith el primo movement. The only JLC movement used by panerai is in the 8 days line.

Is it a pam 72? I owned one for about a year and regret selling it!

I have to admit, IMO most PAMs are too big for bracelets. Even the straps sometimes get big (e.g., see some of the examples Johnny has posted - note I did not say "horrible examples" :lol: ). But a bracelet on a 44 mm PAM would make the whole package seem enormous in my view.

My impression, somewhat like Rockrolex, is that Panerai's just look too bulky with a metal band, which has nothing to do with the quality of the band itself of course. Although Rolex offers a yellow gold Datejust with a leather band, to me it just doesn't look right and I guess that is because I always see Rolex with a metal band. So maybe this is all just conditioning. I wonder too if this "tradition" by Panerai has it's origins in practical concerns. Given that their history is creating dive watches for Italian frogmen, I suppose that they might have gone with a rubber band originally just because it is easier to adjust when you are putting on and taking off various kinds of diving equipment all the time. This is just a guess on my part because I have never asked anyone at the company about it. One thing I admire about the Panerai's is that they are quite legible--their dials make it easy to read the time and I understand they have outstanding lume too. Good question. :thumbsup:

Haakon, I've gotta disagree with you on one point. I've got a TT DJ on a leather band and I think it makes a great looking dress watch.

LOL. Well, I didn't mean to offend your personal sense of style, but I trust you understood that. I think this is the first time I remember seeing a two tone datejust on a leather strap though. I am going to have to lay down because the world is changing too fast for me! :cheers:

I gotta back up Mike on this. The only watch Panerai has put a JLC movement in is the 190 8 day. All the chronos are Valjoux and Zenith models.

I quite like the look of the bracelet, but for me, only on a non-historic model. The bracelet gives it the ability to go in and out of the water without fear of ruining the leather, but then again, I prefer the leather hands down.

I think the bracelets make the Panerai's look too large. I tried on the 40 mm with the SS bracelet. Was thinking it would be a replacement for the Sub. BUT, it just doesn't look right to me.

The 40mm auto Luminor has the same movement as the 44mm Auto Luminor, and I beleive that is the Valjoux. ( As evidenced by it's characteristic "wobble" )

The bracelets are awesome, but straps are what these watches are historically based on.

Here are a few of the outside movements that Panerai uses/has used.
Frédérique Piguet chrono
Zenith El Primero
Zenith Elite 680
JLC calibre.
"high beat" Zenith El Primero
GP Alarm

along with the many based on the Valjoux and Unitas/ETA movements. :cheers:

Yes but they each have an exclusive deal with Panerai to supply the movements.

It is an amazing bracelet that Panerai make. Maybe I'll get one when I lose my marbles enough to convince myself a couple of grand is just fine for a bracelet. :dummy: :chuckle:

When I'm in a bracelet mood then its Rolex for me all the way. I think the oyster is the most comfortable bracelet on the market, even if it isn't exactly the most stylish. :thumbsup:

Hey, don't discount some of the aftermarket bracelets. Daren had one and he said that while it was a b!tch to size, once that was done, he said it was totally comfortable and just as good as OEM. (but don't quote me).

I like the bracelet myself, but wouldn't wear it on my historic.

I'm still a strap virgin myself. Got the OEM black gator on still but it is very comfortable. I've asked Greg Stevens if he can make me a strap or two in the coming weeks. I think a Crazy Horse and something else. Not sure yet..

Greg makes some beautiful straps. For me it was down to a Crazy Horse or a Gabomagic and the Gabo won (greg's keepers are too wide for my taste).

But the CH is a beauty. Look at his Primo as well. Daren has them both and he says they're stunning!
