Hi, I bought a pen recently which has a gold plated clip. The clip has discolored significantly (see attached). I would like it to be like golden again. Can I rub it with things like Cape Cod cloth or I would risk further injuries?

The only time I've seen Gold change to color like that was when it was exposed to very high sulfur/sulfur compounds. Acidic of course, but the Gold turned more of a dingy grey/black color.................. Strange.

The gold itself doesn't discolor... It is the metals that it has been alloyed with that are oxidizing..

A couple of rubs with any polishing cloth or even silver polish will have it looking like new again..

That's great!! I have a few pairs of GP cufflinks that I would like restored...you just policshed it with a jeweller's cloth, that's it?

Yup. Rubbed it for like 30 seconds and I'm really amazed that it does work. However, I'm told that every time I wipe that cloth onto the surface I would be removing a little bit of the gold plating so only use it sparingly.
