I do a lot of diving and used to do it for a living. A backup timer is always useful though its not necessary for recreational diving. Im still old school enough to have a rough plan of tables when I'm diving just in case. My GMT has held up like a champ up to 40m.
Also, love my Garmin descent for the actual diving. highly recommended if you're into that sort of thing.
