For the same money, I'd pick the newer version of a Rolex model. Rolex is pretty conservative about making changes (in the case of the bracelets, just plain "late to the party"), and those changes are usually worth having. I still expect a Rolex to last more than one lifetime, so I consider pre-owned to be great values. My 50's and 60's DJ's still work fine without the improvements of the last 50 years.
As to collectibility, Rolex makes so many of each model and for so long that predicting collectibility is a sucker's bet for models as recent at Zenith Daytona's. I'm hoping to pick up a Daytona in a few months and will be looking at the Zenith Daytona, but the reason will be about saving a few $'s on the somewhat older versions.
