Without a police report contiguous to the alleged theft, there was no theft, from Rolex's point of view. As has been intimated, one could very easily sell the watch, keep the box and papers, and then years later, report it stolen, and potentially, get it back from Rolex, were it to be sent in for service. That is why they require a police report, contiguous to the alleged time of loss or theft.

Out of curiosity, why would you or anyone, for that matter, NOT file a police report.......

And, who is the owner WOULD be the operative question......and a 2 year plus post "theft" report is not a very credible methodology of establishing ownership, having box, papers and the original receipt in hand notwithstanding, absent also having the actual watch in your possession.

Now, if the theft were just now discovered (say, you had last seen the watch some 2 years ago), that would be different, however, as you have now established otherwise, on this, a public forum, presenting your loss as such would potentially have a very bad outcome.....
