Financial Regrets at a Young Age

As the title suggests, do you have any regrets regarding your finances at a young age?

Ie. Shouldn't have bought this watch/car/etc, should have started investing sooner...

Nothing other than I should have bought realestate at an earlier age.

I was investing at 16 thanks to my dad. Time in the market, don't time the market was one of his favourite sayings. He taught me to accumulate dividend growth stocks and not pay too much attention to "noise". This simple strategy has worked well for my family today.

All sorts.

Can’t even list them. I’ve wasted endless money.

But the same faults in my personality have helped me in other ways. So I’m relatively at peace. I’m pretty well set up at 43. I hope I’ll be saying the same at 63.

When i was in my 20's I was a spending bitch and stupid...wasted money on motorcycles....in 1984 i had 5 bikes at one time....well one was my ex wife's. I SHOULD have saved saved and saved. Its just sheer luck i followed a Mormon real estate developer back in 2001 that I have what i have today. He bought condo's in North Scottsdale and my wife had access to repo's from Wells Fargo. I bought repo condo's in Kierlands for nothing.....and sold in summer 06 in a bidding war. Hope for the best plan for the worst.....In today's cold civil war climate who the hell knows what will happen next....but i expect the worse.

I am in my 20s now. Currently spending on silly things... but when I was even younger, I wasted money on baseball and Pokémon cards. Sigh. I have not learned.

As a young man I spent most of my money on wild women, fast cars, and cheap liquor.

The rest I just wasted.

Financial Regrets at a Young Age

Women, cars and liquor = BAD.

I could have retired at 40 had I just not spent the money.

But I did and it was fun. Met my wife via my escapades and settled down on 2 of the 3 and the cars have extra seats now.

All I can say is if you are in your 20’s is delete TRF now and never look back!!

I spent a good portion of my 20s leading a very active bachelor lifestyle that was the envy of most of my heterosexual male friends and acquaintances. Sure, I could've stashed away some of the money and bought property earlier. But at least my wife knows I'm far less likely to have a "mid-life crisis" b/c of regretting a lack of "opportunities back in the day" for youthful indiscretions.......

That being said, one of my great regrets is buying a Cartier Santos Round Automatic as my first "nice" timepiece, instead of choosing to go with a vintage Sea Dweller. Ah well.......

Not buying the bottle of A.H. Hirsch when I saw it at the liquor store for $1500 like 6 or 7 years ago. Not stocking up on Crown Royal Cask 16 or any of the Japanese whiskeys.

I’m still making stupid mistakes. But you’ve got to enjoy the ride as well. Saving is important, but it’s only part of the equation.

Any time I got a bonus as a young professional, or any kind of influx of money as I aged, I always put 50% away. Paid off some current bills, and then blew the rest.

I like spending. It’s fun.

Buying a house with my partner and breaking up 1 month later is right up there.... house then nosedived and was worth 70% of it's value a year later due to being in a city with a very niche economy that crashed.

Lesson learnt though so not a complete waste of money, just a very expensive lesson!

Not that I am thinking about getting a divorce, but my wife spends 110-120% of my income every year.
I think the most a court would award here is 50%..
If i was divorced I would have 70% more income!

I don’t get my spuds mashed over the past. It’s done, can’t turn the clock back. Learn from it and move on.

I feel like I am entitled to make mistakes as I am in my 20s... I feel like I tried to do it all correctly; went to college, finished top of my class, got married, bought a house, went back to grad school for further education. Thus far I feel like I’ve always done things according to a rule book. Spending and splurging on things is likely to be the only thing I’m doing that “I am not supposed to”.
