What makes a complete Watch Collection??
I am looking to grow my collection. I currently have a GMT II "Coke", Explorer I "39mm" and GMTIIC. What would be other good watches "Rolex" to help round out or complete my collection. Do you think a DayDate? DateJust? Explorer II? Etc... Just looking for opinions! Thanks!!!!

Are you just interested in what's collectible to others or what's a well rounded collection for you?

Only you can decide what you want. It's a personal choice. Pick what you like best and would wear the most.

Just my 2¢ - here's my idea of a plan: Starter set: Sub, Explorer, Datejust Next level, add: Daytona, Day-Date, GMT Final level, add: DSSD, YM-II, Milgauss And if you still have money, begin your dive into the Vintage models...

A datejust IMO. Good value for the money and a rather low profile yet it screams good taste!

Some collect the same model different versions.
Some collect different models. Some collect different brands. A complete collection is a collection that meets the collectors needs and desires, there is no right or wrong answer. Get the watch or watches that you like the most.

The answer is: NOTHING. There is no such thing as a complete collection, unless you buy one of every model they sell.
What I have seen is that there there diving diehards, GMT diehards and others. Diving diehards collect only diving watches and they have a couple of gmts. GMT dieshards collect only GMTs but have couple of subs and others collect all kinds. Sometimes you fall in love with a particular model and buy different year models of it. It is for you to decide where you fit. What ever watch attracts you, that's the one to get. It does not matter if all you have is 200 SS models. You do not need to vary your collection. You can have 200 TT watches and it doesn't mean you need to add some SS. What you like that you buy. Me personally, I am repulsed by some Rolex models likethe Daytona and the Datejusts and Daydates - I would not buy them even if they were 90% off BUT I am drawn like a zombie towards their diving series and I love them. |

A watch you can swim/dive in, a watch with multiple timezones for travel, a watch for a suit, and, if you're keen, a chronograph, Apart from that no further watches are necessary, unless you want them.

Me personally the Rolex part of my collection has been built with a LV Sub (throw the black dial on if you don't like green, you'll love the maxi) and a SS Daytona. The third Rolex has been rotating between GMTIIc, TT sub, Seadweller and Milgauss. Then I throw some a mix of Breit-bling, JLC, Chopard in for good measure.

IMHO, no collection should ever be complete without the legendary, iconic and timeless, Rolex Submariner.

For me a complete collection depends on the collector. If you live a life where you have a casual day job and enjoy doing rock climbing on the weekends then something like a GMT and Explorer II will probably give you all you need.
If you have a formal office job, have to attend black tie events and the most casual you get is a polo shirt and some smart shorts then you probably need a dress watch, a sub and a DJ to round it all of. Most WIS will probably always want more but I believe when you have a nice watch for every occasion you encounter then you are as complete as you can get. Obviously nice for a black tie even is something like a Patek whereas nice for white water rafting would be something like an Explorer II. Personally, despite being a WIS, I have a list of 5 watches which I consider to make a perfect collection for me. |
