SUb or Milgauss as 1st Rolex ?
Hi,
This could easliy be a very silly question (especially to this well informed community), and there is the whole 'personal preference' thing, but i'm now in the market for my first Rolex - pressie off the mrs for my imminent coming of age (40th birthday !!!) ... I'm not planning on ever getting rid of it, and it's something i'll keep 'forever' so it's obviously a big deciosn and a lot of £££ for me to so i'm after any useful advise i can find :-) i've been tearing myself up over the last few weeks as to which to go for ... The money is there to spend but which should i go for .. i think i'm down to a choice of 3 : Sub no Date - new (why is it so much cheaper without the date ?) Sub with date - 'slightly pre-owned' Milgauss - 116400GV - i think this is the ltd edition one ? i'm sure a lot of you will have to cast your mind back a long time to your first Rolex purchase, but if you can put yourself in my shoes, which of these would you go for (and can i expect to get one with the £££ i have ?) Arrrgghhhh !!! so many questions, i've lost plenty of sleep already and i'm driving the mrs crazy ... hope that dipping my toe in this fountain of knowledge will help :-) Thanks guys ! |

For the first one - I'd go with a Sub Date (either a 16610 or a 116610LN).
IMO - the GV is the perfect 2nd watch There is a possibility of a new Sub ND from Basel 2012... But no one really knows. Have you tried all three to see which one you like best? |

Go for the 16610 Submariner Date or the Milgauss-GV. Both gorgeous watches!

If you happen to equally like them all, get the one which you can get the best deal on.

perhaps consider the 16610lv, it comes with the maxi dial and the green insert can be replaced by a black one if you prefer it all black..

sub seems to be the revered, the most recognizable and versatile - the obvious choice
which is why I would opt for the Milgauss |

Milgauss GV - this is not a limited edition. Just one of the versions of milgauss with the green glass. Buy the one that SINGS to you the most. If you stay long enough here, you might get the infection anyways and collect all three! haha :) |

Although Milgauss was my first, I'd suggest the Sub if you're only getting one.
I bought my Milgauss specifically for a dress watch. I then caught the bug and wanted a second as more of a daily wearer. I got the GMT, but Sub would be good for ths too. |

I vote for Sub Date as well....
If you have to choose only one, why not get the one with the best features? Including a date function on a timepiece is a complication thus requires the watchmaker to spend significant more time making the watch - this where that price difference is justified. Sub Date at 40......great classic choice in my book. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk - Eddie - Certified Watch Nut |

i think you need to LOVE the ND for what it is, otherwise, you might end up feeling it's not all that.
so, my guess, since you're asking for opinions, is that it comes down to the SubC or GV....they are so different, it really is a question of trying them on. you could also consider the black dial milgauss (non-GV). it's a bit cleaner and a little less "special", making it, imho, a more well-rounded and classy affair. good luck! |
