Well, it appears to be real opal at least. Are you looking to sell or install on a DD?

That is the issue with dials. The dial itself may be factory OEM Rolex...BUT if its "refinished" its not really a Rolex dial. I am a purist so if its not a factory dial I dont want any parts of it. Not saying that this is the case with this one, but if I could not get confrimation I would pass

I wish I had a way to put you in touch with Eric Ku so he could see it in person. I think most folks here would trust his opinion, presumably someone will be able to help you out there and put you in contact.
Even if it’s not factory original, that’s a striking dial, and a beautiful piece of opal. Learning that it’s a single slab, not pieced together nor chips in resin, was a big step imo. I wish this was my “problem”! As to my earlier issue about the ‘bowed out’ date window, I happened across the below pic of an unmounted onyx dial, which seems to have a similar shape. Perhaps this is simply a trait of some stone dials, and we usually just don’t notice it because of the cyclops? As to the glue being unfamiliar, could it be that his experience was with stone dials from say, Stern or Singer, while this one is from, e.g., Lemrich or Beyeler? Did more than one maker produce the stone Rolex DD dials, or are they all from a single source? Anyone know? I am SO curious about this! (Can you tell? ) . . |

Do the colours change / move / flash when you tilt the dial back and forth. Does it appear to be alive with movement? If it's just a two dimensional colour, opal it ain't. Opal like that (looks like black opal) is three dimensional - the colours seem to move. When you add some moisture (lick it) do the colours become more intense? The blues and greens should appear to be dancing with each other.

I appreciate the offers to buy the dial, I've had several inquiries and highest being $5k.
Im going to have to pass on the offers. I think if there is a chance this dial is OEM from Rolex(hoping to confirm soon), then it has to go to auction after its installed inside a beautiful and pristine DD. If it is original, the potential is in my opinion $60k... or more. Or I might just hold on to it... I've grown very fond of this dial. Hoping to be in contact with Erik Ku soon. Thank you for the replies. |
