That is Elder wood pith. It is a soft wood we use to clean pivots and our oiling picks. You just poke the pivot in, and it cleans any grease off. Very useful, and a must have.

You have to wait a second for the pic to load.

I don't think I can order this wood as it will likely be confiscated by quarrantine.

My guess is it is something like balsa wood.

Quite interesting to have a slice of tree used to clean fine watch parts and tools. Who would have thought that would be effective.

Basically, pith. Some Watchmakers use it to store needle oilers, rest movements on it, wide variety of stuff really. It is kinda like a soft non-marring work surface.
