Have a friend who’s on the “list” for one. He got the call and was told he needed to spend 10k in the store to get his watch and he did it. Can anyone please tell me what the difference is?

The first is bribery, the second blackmailing.

Then your friend has more money than sence,or must be sixpence short of a shilling to spend a extra 10k to get any watch.

I think it’s possible the OP was joking. Anyone who’s been hanging around here long enough would know $5,000 wouldn’t get it done….

While I 100% agree with you and would never pay over retail for a current model watch, how is this any different than one of the "Trusted Sellers" on here that charge $10k over MSRP and "we" all line up to applaud them?

There’s absolutely no difference. If you spend 20k net on a grey market purchase for a watch vs spending 10k on a watch and 10k on jewelry at an AD. Spending 20k at an AD is actually a better use of your resources because it helps build spend history and a relationship. Don’t forget the used watch dealers are sponsors here. 5k isn't enough. SA would make more money off of you selling useless jewelry. Go grey and save yourself the headache.

This was precisely my experience at AD in S. America in 2022 to buy a sub. I laughed said no and got the sub a few months later from an AD in the US without the crap jewelry and junk watches I didn’t want. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I would argue (correctly), you are better off spending the extra money with the AD. Both options stink but one is definitely the lessor of evils

The noun in this sense is from 1755. The term in the sense of "to give a gratuity" first appeared in the 18th century. It derived from an earlier sense of tip, meaning "to give; to hand, pass", which originated in the thieves' cant in the 17th century. This sense may have derived from the 16th-century "tip" meaning "to strike or hit smartly but lightly" (which may have derived from the Low German tippen, "to tap"), but this derivation is "very uncertain". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratuity |

I still see so many people insisting that many if not most Rolex “go out the back door” with zero evidence but that’s another story. |

Why would anyone buy other watches or really anything from an AD that refuses to sell them a Rolex? If they deem you unworthy of being sold one product they supposedly sell, it seems very hypocritical and demeaning for them to say, but we’ll sell you this Omega or JLC. I would say, you either want my business or you don’t. If you don’t, that’s fine. I’m out.

Well that's up to the person willing to pay, myself would never applaud any seller charging 10k over retail. But today Rolex watches have become little more than ££€€$$ object things and little more, now sold to the highest bidder willing to pay.

Ha, indeed. Bribery isn't okay in any situation and is a question of ethics. I'm sure Rolex would swiftly yank their AD status if they got wind of such practices. In many industries, don't people get fired and/or jailed for such behavior? Sad.

Give me the tip and I will order you a watch. I will use my magic with a few dealers to get it for you quickly
Just note that my personal rule is to never pay more than retail. And I have another rule to never pay an exorbitant retail. I had some other rules but I forgot them … |

This is a normal practice in some Eastern European countries. With zero spending history, you can get a nice watch by paying something on top in cash. However as many pointed out above 5k will not be enough for SS Daytona.

Sorry to break it to you but $5k isn’t cutting it for a Panda. If it was enough people would just do that instead of paying an extra $15k on the grey.
People have spent way more than that on jewellery and other watches. Not to mention, the sales person would be putting their job on the line for $5k and have to justify the allocation to upper management.

First ask yourself this why are some willing to pay crazy money for watches like the Daytona. As the Daytona must be the most hyped Rolex watch ever. And although it's always been hard to get at retail, mainly because of Daytona hype.Yes it has a great movement but must be many thousands of them in this world today, and all basically the same except for a few purely cosmetic details. And if there was no hype over the Daytona it would not be the premium price, and if people stopped paying these silly money for them, prices would go down, but today Rolex watches have become just ££€€$$ objects and little more today.

Bribery may also take the form of a secret commission, a profit made by an agent, in the course of his employment, without the knowledge of his principal.
