Newspaper article - Sydney Morning Herald
Hi there,
Its been a while but thought this interesting. In the SMH today was an article about purchasing watches via auctions. Attached to the article was a photo of some watches which I thought was interesting as I've not come across them before - atleast two have dials with Rolex logos but the watchbands, linkages to case, inserts etc - well I'll let you be the judge. Top left looks like a daytona dial - but the insert, band connection etc? Anyway thought this might be of interest and if anyone can shed further light on the photo I would be curious. http://www.smh.com.au/executive-styl...03-10ba6n.html |

I am no expert but they all look like a bunch of really bad fakes. The top left looks like a Daytona dial with a Yachtmaster bezel. Below that is a terrible Navitimer fake. As for the others they are just odd looking watches with a Rolex logo stamped on the dial.

I think it's an unrelated stock photo of some fake garbage.
By the way, that tsuba in your avatar is a work of art. Yours? |

Fakes.
Care is required to be exercised when purchasing even at public auctions.

Hi Alex,
(offtopic) that particular tsuba unfortunately no - its sitting in the Ashmolean Museum in Cambridge as far as I'm aware. But I have managed to obtain one which is the same design (took 6 years) - and much nicer in my view. (another, not -inexpensive way to empty the wallet) Back on topic - the SMH lifted this article from 'Dmarge' (new to me) but you'd think they might be a bit more careful. |

I wonder if the editor knew that that was a picture of a bunch of fakes, especially given the caption.
Watch auctions can serve up a smart new timepiece for daily wear, or a canny investment.
