What can you tell me about this?
So TRF, I recently inherited this from my grandfather who recently passed away, For a man with hardly a penny to his name I was surprised to see this gifted to me in his last wishes, I'd like some information on this piece if possible please, The first being
Is it genuine? Also if it is genuine just some general information regarding age etc etc I know the bezel is 18k white gold apparently but I shall have the jewellers confirm this. I want to open the back but have no tool to try, I shall be taking it to my local jewellers now for verification on this. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust You might be able to make out the numbers of 1601 and the serial of 3400608 in the photos |

You have a very nice 1601 Datejust with a pie pan dial. The serial # would put it around 1971-72

Be very careful taking it to a "jeweler" to authenticate it. I've seen times where people have taken a watch to someone that had no business opening a case or removing a bracelet and the watch gets damaged.
Nice watch, and it's authentic.......no worries. Looks as if your grandfather wore that watch VERY sparingly

Well I took it took my local jeweller who like you said Jason wouldn't open the back case to show me the movement in fact his exact words were "I'm not 100% sure unless we send it to Rolex itself"
Mentioned something that the dial should say "Swiss Made" instead of just Swiss, Ideally I want to get the back off at home, If anyone has any homemade techniques on opening these? Pretty safely |

Looks like it says t swiss t for tritium. My 1972 oyster precision has the same marking on the bottom.

Very nice Datejust and you are right to proceed cautiously. Have it opened professionally by someone with the correct tools and experience.
As an aside, calling yourself Lord Lucan is a little disturbing. Unless you are the real thing, which would be a whole other story. |

Hahaha I hate it when it comes to these nicknames on forums, It was literally a case of at the time the missus mentioned that I disappeared "like Lord Lucan" when she asked to for a lift.

A funny Missus... for her sake I hope you don't have some of the other qualities attributed to his Lordship...

Just send it to RSC and get a full service, this way you'll know it's real and have ppw in your name, although I have no doubts it's real but you seem like a worrier since you want to go to the crazy next step of taking the back off at home and probably ruining the watch.
I'd also hunt for a pre-loved jubilee and wear the heck out of it, but that's just me... |

Plenty of good Rolex certified watchmakers in London. & less $ than RSC by far. Service papers won't help value much and the cost of RSC service will be a big part of watches value then. Just my opinion. If you plan on keeping as heirloom then no problem with RSC. m

Its genuine, and in VERY good condition. Mind you that although the watch is in stainless steel, the bezel is in White Gold. To my eye, the case has been polished, and the bezel is very sharp for a gold one of that age ( pan dial ) , ( changed ??? ) especially when the bracelet seems that had collapsed from use ? . But still, its a very nice watch. Enjoy

Sorry about your grandfather.
It's nice he chose you to pass it on too. That is a very nice date just, I too think it deserves a bracelet. I love that pie pan dial along with the plexiglass. Congratulations on a great looking watch. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
