What EXCITES you most about buying a new watch?
Hi guys,
I guess you've got the gist of my question. So what part of your watch-buying spree do you enjoy the most? 1. Is it the hunt? 2. Is it the anticipation from the seller or AD (assuming of course that the seller is genuine and the watch will definitely arrive!!!) 3. Could it be the trading up of your existing one in exchange for the new one? 4. Or maybe the selling off privately of your existing one....waiting in eager anticipation for the sale to materialise and then taking the plunge for the new one? 5. Well, perhaps it could be just that you get up one fine morning and make a beeline straight for your AD and pick up a watch....rather boring, uh? 6. Better still, the planning and plotting....the anticipation....the "should I" or "shouldn't I" scheming? 7. Or, hey, just tell the wife straight to her face: "Honey, I'm getting a new Rolex tomorrow from my AD!!!!!" Go on, fellas, let it all out....what EXCITES you most when planning the purchase of a new watch? JJ

First, I have to say I've become more discriminating in what I buy. I used to buy a watch as soon as I decided I liked it... and ended up with a bin full of expensive watches that I never wear. Now, I let the initial interest wear off before I decide to make the purchase. I try to only buy watches that I'll really enjoy for many years, since I tend not to sell watches, but rather just keep accumulating.
So what excites me most about buying a new one these days? I guess a lot of it is still the "thrill of the hunt" -- finding the right price (I'm no longer as loyal to one dealer as I used to be), and then there's looking down at my wrist while sitting in my office and seeing that new aquisition peeking out. I must say, though, that no purchase -- of a watch or anything else -- has excited me as much as when I bought my first Rolex, almost exactly twenty years ago. When I bought my GMT II, in April '86, the thrill lasted for months. I've been wearing that watch all week in celebration of its 20th birthday. We're having a party this weekend. :-) |

What excites me is knowing I'll be able to take hundreds of pictures of my new watch and post them on TRF at the least excuse.

You're preparing us for the next acquisition, aren't you, JJ? You're in the hunt now, right? That's what this is all about.
But in answer to your question, for me it's the hunt for the right one at the right price. Like Peter, I am not a flipper, so I have to determine which watch I want to have for the duration. And at this point, I am pretty much done with the watches I want. There are a couple out there that are on the "someday" list, but at the moment I am quite satisfied with my collection as it stands.

I was actually thinking of having a "lunch" for the watch, at a restaurant, but figured I'd be all alone at a table with my GMT and his watch siblings. If we could get a few people together, then I'd do it. :-) |

For me it's the hunt, the anticipation and the planning behind the acquisition. Like Peter, my GMT was my first one and no other has offered the same excitement since. I have learned that the more time and thought I put into the selection, the longer my fascination with the watch lasts. Ultimately, it seems like I enjoy the events leading up to the acquisition almost, if not more, than the watch itself in some cases.

EVERYTHING!!! It starts on the 'should I', then looking at different options; the hunt; waiting for 'the call', sizing it and also trying to explain to your wife why you need another Rolex!

Let the record show that aside from the little Ed/Peter exchange, that this is one JJ thread that didn't get horrendously hijacked (yet).
Could we actually be starting to take BKL seriously? Nah, he's still the king tosser/flipper! |

Not sure, the hunt/selection is great, but the feeling you get when the transaction is done, the watch is on your wrist & they hand you the box & paper work. It's all so rewarding.
However, when I came home with the new Watch Time last nite, my wife said she may have to hold an Intervention for me. ( I did tell her it had been out for 2 weeks already, what are you talking about)

Sorry to go off topic guys, but does anyone ever notice that JJ never answers his own question?

The thrill of the hunt much more than the kill and trophy.
