buy a high-end road or gravel bike and go for a bicycle (bike) ride...now who would have thought I'd say that!

Seriously, I've been riding for about 30 years with a group of guys around the same age (clubs are out there). we ride 3-4 hours each Sat and Sun. ride solo two weekdays in the early AM (you have to build up to all that) and it's not only good for the body and mind...it's great socialization too. Have become good friends with many of them. I can be stressed out or down and then go for a ride...and when I get back I honestly can't remember what I was upset about.

It's not too cold. You just need the gear. there's also indoor riding like Zwift...check it out.

or join a gym and do something you like...exercise is the pill you're looking for

How do you snap yourself out of feeling really, really down?

I probably don’t have a good answer. I’m not sure anyone does, but 2 things for me:

Music
Science Fiction

I do work out too. I like to ride my bike several miles a day, but this time of year, I don’t ride as much. By the time I’m done with work, it’s usually dark outside, and I don’t like to ride at night.

Talk to a good psychiatrist to get a diagnosis of your situation. It will help you assess what steps you could take to improve your mental state of mind. If you have a clinical depression (and not just the winter blues, or whatever), you may not be able to just ‘snap out of it’ and there is no shame at all in that. A good psychiatrist won’t just simply prescribe you a pill but will also discuss other things you can do to heal.

Good call on Zwift, I was unfamiliar with this previously. As for exercise though that is something I do on a daily basis for a living so unfortunately it wasn't the missing piece for me.

Take a step back. Breathing techniques. Mental list of positive outcomes and successes. Move on to next goal.

Others said it, but do see a recommended therapist. Some people need a third party to point things out. Or a prescription medication, even if temporary, could help. Feel better!
