When I was 18 years old I took up scuba diving. We were on a check out dive and my dive master had his watch on. I stopped him and reminded him to take off his watch. He then proceeded to tell me how his “Submariner” was designed for scuba diving. I was studying mechanical engineering and was fascinated by this watch. I went back home and went to the LSU library and started researching this brand Rolex. I was amazed and decided this is the watch for me.

On our next dive the dive master let me wear the watch to monitor my bottom time. OMG, I was hooked. I went to the local AD and my world was rocked. I couldn’t come close to being able to afford this watch. So I decided one day this will be my watch and I will never wear anything else.

Life proceeded, marriage, children, expenses…. Each time I checked the prices they were just out of reach, more important things to spend my money on.

31 years later my second wife, who knew the entire story gave me my Submariner for my 51st birthday. It is my favorite watch. It doesn’t get as much wrist time because of my collection but is still my favorite.

Another vote for stainless Submariner. Whichever model works for you, date or no date.
The watch is good for ALL occasions and is an icon for a reason. If I could only have one, it would be that.

The current GMT "Pepsi" is the greatest watch Rolex has ever made, IMO. It's absolutely perfect. Proportions, colors, wearability, plus you can switch between factory oyster and jubilee. It's great.

Daytona 116500. Can be worn dress up or dress down. Just as tough as any other Rolex so can be used for beating as well, and can go plenty deep enough for 99.9% of people.

I sold mine as it didn’t get much time as part of a collection, but if I were to go back to just having one watch, it would be the 116500 without any hesitation.

Don’t think there’s one perfect watch, that’s why almost all of us have a collection of various sizes. If I had to pick only one watch to wear daily forever? I’d probably go with a VC Overseas dual time black dial. The bracelet/leather/rubber strap changes allow you to dress it up or down, black dial goes with everything clothing-wise, the GMT complication is nice for travel, and since it’s not a Rolex I feel like it’s more under the radar than other pieces for occasions where you don’t want to draw attention with an expensive watch.

I want to say something like the Smiths De Luxe, but it’s not perfect for me because it has no date (and, after having no-date watches, they irk me in their lack of functionality).

I’d like to say the watch I actually have, the 1675 — and it would be very, very, close:

But I miss the functionality afforded by the 3185/6. It’s definitely not the 116710 because the flat crystal make it hard to see and it’s shouty bezel is too gauche.

I’m going to say something like the 226570 — with the caveat that it should be 40mm (the 16570 fails on many fronts — not limited to the lack of Explorer hand). I’m on the list for one again, and I’m not sure that I’d pick my 1675 over it.
