No question about it, many current Rolex buyers are value/investment oriented and will sell to protect their downside loss at some point if the market starts to correct. This begets yet more selling and more downward pressure on re-sale values.

It will be interesting to watch; I remember the bounce-back after the GFC and the growth since then hasn't stopped. Wish I picked up a Kermit when they were aplenty and selling for $5-6k regularly.

In the meantime, my only Rolex - my Pepsi - isn't going anywhere, so we will ride this one out together :).

$60bn wiped off the ASX today. I think the change has just started.

Exactly

I just hope all these eager buyers check their 401k balances before they rejoice over lower Rolex prices

Its the newbies who are panicking. So many of them bought their watches as "investments."

A 401k is a qualified retirement plan that allows eligible employees of a company to save and invest for their own retirement on a tax deferred basis. Only an employer is allowed to sponsor a 401k for their employees. These contributions are typically deducted from your salary on a pre-tax basis.

Short selling in the Rolex market. Yea, what could go wrong I think this arbitrage technique is also a bit more effort than it's worth but that's just one humble man's thoughts

I guess Poe's Law got me good.

I know what a 401k is, it was commentary on the distinct lack of retirement planning in this country. I'm sure plenty of people wishing for a market crash so they can more easily buy luxury products don't contribute to any retirement savings.

Ah - I see. The quotes should have been a clue - but now those folks know now.

I always maxed out my 401k contributions - would have also done a Roth IRA but they didn’t exist back then.

All that sounds good, but have you thought about diversifying by adding some Hulks to your portfolio?

We live in interesting times, especially in the UK.
I thought Rolex's plan was to look at the longer term and not rump up production in good times to even out the bad. The ADs have so little to sell it won't matter if the economy was in a downturn as even if fewer people were buying they would still sell them all. If they doubled production during a boom they could be left like Warren B says naked when the tide goes out.
It's too early to say if today is a blip or not. Fingers crossed.

I hope you’re right.. but just because it’s always happened before doesn’t mean it won’t happen again.

That is my point. I will not buy above MSRP, and I wear the watches I buy. If they go up in value then that is a win.

I’m retired now so can’t add in a tax deferred manner - but the H-VIX (my own tongue-in-cheek proprietary tracker) had a bad day - prices down 10%. How’d you do?

Rules of "investing" in watches.
1) Watches are not an investment
2) If you ignore 1) then make sure you buy a watch you like and would wear because when it drops in value at least you have a watch you would wear
3) See 1)

I've always been an index fund person, so while I'm not adding any Hulks, I'm good for the year. These little blips in the market don't bother me.
