I've never paid over retail but would consider it if the premium was too bad (sub 20%)

In my mind, if i spent 2+ years on a waitlist to acquire a watch at RRP, between how i value my time and annual price increases, 20% over retail today will likely be the same as retail 2+ years from now

I dont understand people that currently pay triple retail for some pieces, but i imagine the premium you're prepared to pay for anything is relative to how much money you have at your disposal
If the choice was paying $10k over to a grey dealer or buying $10k worth of stuff i dont want, all while kissing an ADs back side, I'd likely go grey and call it a day

The retail price of anything tends to become irrelevant if you are unable to access it
If you spend a bit of time around Porsche or Ferrari owners and you come to realize that pretty quickly

Well done! It really does look great.

I am getting my Christmas bonus next week. I will be buying a Batman GMT. I will pay just over 20k for it. Justification? I have been waiting on a Datejust 36 for 5 months, no telling how long I will wait on the reference I really want. My SA is trying to steal me towards other references that I am not interested in. I have the cash and I don’t plan on selling the Batman, so why not get exactly what I want. This will be my first watch over $500.

I will be buying an unworn Batman next week when my Christmas bonus comes in. I will pay $20.8k for it. Justification? I placed an order for a Datejust 36 5 months ago, I am still waiting on that. My SA keeps trying to push me towards references that I don’t want. By going with the market price I get exactly what I want. I have no plans on selling it, so price doesn’t matter as much to me. This will be my first watch over $500.

I paid over MSRP. Justified it by the fact that I would have paid over $10k more now (13 months later).

FWIW it was a 116500 black dial. Without a significant purchase history, it was never going to come from an AD. So it was grey and over MSRP or not at all.

In my family we are 3 generations of Rolex lovers.
At first during the 60s Rolex begged my family to go and try their watches on.
A decade later we were offered always hefty discounts to buy “tool” watches
During the eighties and nineties we were offered gold watches with an easy 30% off
Up to 2008 28% to 30% off retail was normal
Life was good with many Rolex watches destined to be given as gifts to the next generation
Last time I bought was 3 years ago, three beautiful Daytona chronographs were bought in France,
a stainless, a 2Tone and all gold Gold, with 10% off retail at the store and another
20% off at the airport with the VAT return.
Today there are a few Rolex new models I would like to have but will not pay a premium
or be in a list - I’ll wait to purchase again if ever the bubble bursts.

So yes, I overpaid but I also was paid over.

I could have taken the profit and called it a win but I like watches :)
Exactly this for me too. Traded in royal oak at more than 2x purchase price to put towards an inflated price DD40

Have not paid over msrp
Absolutely would

My collection is still small. I was considering paying $30 for a blue sky dweller, but that’s day date money. I think I’ll buy the DD instead

Never. But not against it at all. This weekend I just paid about 10K over MSRP for a new vehicle.

I pay over for all of my Rolex watches and have for years. The percentages are varied but I watch the market and I buy/sell/trade quite frequently. With the hyper inflation of prices over the last four years or so most of these purchases result in me making money off my later sales or trades. I very seldom cash out but usually just roll over to a different watch. With the money made the purchases typically are less based on what I have in my trade. You tell me a new SS Daytona-C with the white dial is worth 43k, I think I am into mine for around 25k, then ok. I remember when that watch was in the upper teens and people were saying it was a bubble and they would not pay that for the watch. I bet most of those same people would buy one now for that even if it was just to flip. It is funny that so many take the moral high ground about not buying from the Grey market when really it is about not being willing or possibly able to pay the money. But there is a lot of judgement on others for doing it. Mind your own business, buy what you want and can afford and be happy for our members who through whatever means decide to purchase a watch that makes them happy.

When I bought my 114060 unworn & bnib, I paid 750.00 over list from a trusted seller here. Thought that was pretty reasonable.

In January 2021, I paid about twice-MSRP for a 124300 Turquoise dial OP 39... I paid over $12k at the time, and its MSRP was over $6k.

I've never paid over MSRP for a new watch but I did just pay almost $14K for a 16710 Pepsi does that count? :)

I paid 12K over retail for a white dial 5711 nautilus.

At the time it felt like a bit much…

The most I've paid over MSRP would be $10k for my 126710BLRO. My justification to it is well, the market rate IS the MSRP for me as I have pretty much zero spend history and I'm only mostly interested in SS professional models.

Never Paid anything over MSRP …

In fact when I did get a Daytona offered to me at MSRP and I passed it on to a Member from the Forum who flew down from England for a day and picked it up at MSRP.

Second watch that I passed on to a forum member here was a GMT root beer picked up by the lucky member at the dealer at MSRP at San Francisco.

In my experience everything worth owning seems expensive at the time (Real estate, stocks, certain watches & collectables etc) and then a decade goes by and I wish I had bought more!
