I didn't like the idea of engraving, but your watch is making me change my mind. Superb job!

That is a true work of art, engraving is becoming kind of a lost art. There is not many things that people own anymore that engraving would be done on. Enjoy you piece of art!

Absolutely stunning! Thanks so much for sharing - the caseback looks every bit a work of art as the watch itself

Rolex should offer a service such as this - JLC does it for the Reverso, so why shouldn't Rolex, even if it on a few models?

Wonderful work by the artist. Did she give you any guidance with respect to protecting the case back? If you lay the watch flat face up with the bracelet below the case back I assume it may damage the engraving.

It's a very good point - I popped into Rolex St James Square to request the caseback to be removed and asked this very question. They said that they wouldn't request the back to be replaced but the chap on the front desk did make a point of advising me to ensure this was written out on the service request before leaving the watch with them. That said we have some seriously good independents in the UK so it's likely i'll use Rolex at service time so shouldn't be a problem. Incidentally, Rolex refused to remove the caseback...unsurprisingly.

In my case the warranty has now expired but given I had the caseback removed then this most certainly does void the warranty. It's an interesting point though, not sure how safe it is to engrave whilst the caseback is still attached to the watch, must depend on the tools used but i'm glad it was done this way as I didn't have to be parted from the watch in this instance.

While the caseback was gone, what did you do with the watch? Was there another caseback put on to protect the movement or?
That would have been the best solution but in the absence of another caseback I simply put the case (containing movement) straight into a sealable bag but with a couple of those dessicant gel sachets to make sure any moisture was kept away from the movement. The back wasn't off for too long, probably just over 2 weeks in total, so should be fine.

All hand, the close up macro shot should give you a clue as it looks almost hand drawn at that level. This was something I really wanted in the finished article.

Not cheap but not overly expensive and less than I had budgeted. Less than £400.

I whole heartily agree, in this day and age where technology and machinery rule the roost it's refreshing to see some old school techniques still being performed.

Rolex do offer a customised engraving service, all you need to do is talk to your AD and they should be able to arrange. I did explore this option initially but there are just no examples of their work anywhere so i didn't feel comfortable in the end pursuing with them.

She didn't but i'm one of those OCD watch owner type people so that isn't a problem. Mine are either on their side (as in the last picture) when off my wrist of in the watch box/safe on a pillow so no worries there. I'd imagine the bracelet could well mark the back quite easily though you are right.
