Lol

Money does not equal happiness above a certain threshold of needs being met.

This has been studied over and over again.

OP, if you have current and future security, go with the job you prefer including the people you’d rather work with.

Worry about the superfluous Rolexes later.

I love money. I love everything about it. I bought some pretty good stuff. Got me a $300 pair of socks. Got a fur sink. An electric dog polisher. A gasoline powered turtleneck sweater. And of course, I bought some dumb stuff too.

Reminds me of an interview with a first round NFL player when asked what he was going to do with all the money, he replied:

“I’ll spend 90% of it on wine, women and partying… The rest I’ll just waste on insignificant things

How long is former boss willing to wait for you to assess options?

Steve Martin, you have $200 for charity?
Buy a TIMEGRAHER for Paul.

He was just promoted as assistant to Charles and needs an instrument to participate here.

Money
Get away
You get a good job with good pay and you're okay
Money
It's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team

I think the point, above, about retirement status is key. If that’s taken care of, anything else is gravy; do what you love (if anything).

Job = Giving up my time for money.

If I’m giving up my time, someone is going to pay dearly. I’m a mercenary when it comes to work because my time is my most important asset.

I've been thinking about this a lot.
I've never been a big wage earner. Very small house. Never owned a new car. I've often felt like I "lucked" into Rolex ownership. Imposter syndrome? Love what I have but I could certainly never buy another one.
Now I find myself looking for another job.

I'm barely even thinking about pay. Mostly just considering what I want to do all day and what kind of environment I want to spend my days in. I have ~8 years left and I don't want to spend them bored or unhappy.
Not surprisingly I'm getting the most attention from engineering offices just like what I left and hardly any attention from the auto dealership community which is where I had been thinking of transitioning to simply because I like cars and thought it'd be light and interesting.
Is money important? Yeah sure but not worth being miserable over.

Gotta be Happy with the job and if you know or like your Boss then that's a plus.....I've worked as a Police Officer on 3 occasions and back & forth as a Contractor overseas. The P.O. position definitely pays at least 1/4 my contractor positions but I've enjoyed playing COP.

How important is money?

Important, but so are other things.

I think you need a decision tree Paul.

First, figure out how many more years you are realistically going to work.

Then take the amount you have lost to date on furlough and divide that by the number of years you have left to work. And IMOP, that is the pay cut you have already taken for the hope of maybe coming back to your current job. Then throw in another 10 months of furlough as a possible scenario and rinse and repeat.

Next, try to verify that this new competitor was on sound legal footing in hiring your old boss and is ok to hire your. For example, is there a covenant not to compete that would prevent you from working with the new company? Because is there is, you may not want to take on a lawsuit.

Next, as others have said, think about what items you may be able to negotiate with the competitor, such as a stake in the business, bonuses, comp time, and maybe Rolex allowance.

Last, as other have also said, try to factor your age in. If your current no paycheck employer never hires you back how many other opportunities will be out there a year from now.

Best of luck my friend.

Good point on non-compete here.

If you do have one, and signed any kind of furlough agreement, make sure your state’s legal rulings on enforceability.
