No matter what, the Daytona will be THE Rolex for me. I am thankful to have one at the moment, and the 116520 will always be on top of my list.

The Daytona 116520 SS is the "GRAIL" in my Rolex stainless steel collection. And if and when they come out with a ceramic version in SS....I will love mine even more. ($$$$$).

The Daytona is beautiful piece but let's be honest its way over priced for a SS watch! You can get GMT IIc for $8400 and it looks just as good if not better because of the ceramic IMO. If the Daytona was the only SS sport watch with updated clasp and PCL's like it once was that makes things a little different. Most people rarely buy that watch for the crono function so what does it really offer more than a GMT or Sub. Nothing. Even though it's a beautiful piece supply and demand is what made it most desirable. Everyone wants what that can't get. Some people and places who are not in the loop are still holding on to this like its a rare piece! Although I can admit it's harder to come buy than a Sub.

Had a modern Daytona and let it go. Frankly, it just didn't do it for me. I see them in dealer windows all the time. I'm kind of interested in the vintage models, but the prices are just too high for me now (I missed that boat).

I love my black dial SS Daytona. I use the chronograph function all the time; sometimes for my own amusement to time how long people ramble on during lectures or presentations, but also for road trips, cooking, and other projects.

My wife bought me my Daytona for an anniversary gift in '98. I wore it almost daily for over 10 years in my heavy construction business and it is a rugged piece. I bought myself a II-C a few years ago, and not long afterward, a Speedy Pro. The later additions get nearly all the wrist time now. The Speedy is much easier to read, and daily winding is its only drawback.

Just wish they were a bit bigger, esp in this day and age and as its a chrono.

The Daytona...How times have changed...
The first time I saw a photo of a white dial, SS, Daytona, I thought, "That's a beauty!"
I saw one in an AD about two or three years ago. I was told they were very hard to come by. The price was then around $10k. I thought, "that's a beauty." I wasn't in a position to shell out that much, though. From that point on, every time I saw a photo of the watch, I thought, "maybe some day." Earlier this year, I bit the bullet and asked my AD to track one down. By then, the price had climbed to $12k. Waiting cost me two grand! Anyway, they had no trouble and a few days later, I took that beauty home. It is not the most practical chronograph, from a legibility standpoint. But, for my purposes, that's not an issue. It's an elegant, perfectly sized watch (for me). A nice blend of sports watch and dress watch. It works fine as an everyday watch or a special occasion watch. I say, wear it wherever and often. Very accurate. Very comfortable. I feel it's low profile, too...when I've worn my Sub, I've often received comments. So far, the Daytona has not elicited such attention. Once, I complimented a guy on his SS white dial Daytona...he was surprised, as no one had ever done so before. We watch lovers know it well, but, I think, it is not as instantly recognizable as a Rolex to the non-enthusiast. I plan to hang on to mine. When I put it on, I think, "that's a beauty". It is a pleasure to own...here are a few recent pictures: |

It is a great movement and overall a watch I really enjoy wearing. I have the SS black dial, and in my area you don't see them a lot although now that I think about it I am the 3rd person in my boxing gym that I know who has one, haha.

The UK ADs still make out its a waiting list of years, but most have one in the back and if you have cash you can get one.
My view is the watch is now over priced for what you get but the watch still looks cool, |

I had a SS Daytona white dial for a period but let it go. As it turned out the white dial, polished bezel and PCL weren't for me. I also didn't like the no-date feature. Still it's a stunning piece, with any dial combo, maybe just not for me.
I did like the Heritage model portrayed on this site some time back. Really very very nice. On the other end of the spectrum, I've been eyeing a WG black diamond dial on brown leather strap model here locally. Again, a stunning piece but probably too high profile for my tastes. |

i think it s still nice to own one , prices of today are more or less the same like the prices of yesterday and the premium you had to pay.
so nothing really changed.

I travel monthly to various watch shows and the "Daytona" is in demand People still willing to pay higher than the average Rolex sport watch % wise and...sellers expect higher margins than what they would normally expect from - let's say - a steel Rolex Sub or GMT So..unfortunately used prices have not come down... I am willing to pay $8.500-$9.000 for a full set right here in the forum and.. I was offered two...both used for about 10% less than I can buy new. About AD's having one on display (?) I am regularly visiting AD's here in south Florida...also in England, Germany, Italy...even in Greece with the mother of all economic crisis... there is none to be seen on display ...the least they will sell me a new one there is $11,700...which is high. All in all... every spring when time for a "short sleeve shirt" approaches the Steel Rolex Daytona chronograph...still is the "secret" dream for many. |

Times have changed since Basel 13' as the Daytona I want the most is made of a new metal...namely Platinum!

Bought mine two years ago. It is my number 2 watch behind my sub, followed by an AP 15300 and a JLC MUT moon. So it is in good company. Wear it to Indy and American Le Mans races, it just feels right.

I really like the Daytona. It's a great watch and holds it value. I just can't get one until they introduce the new model with a ceramic bezel on SS. Otherwise, the current bezel is very prone to scratching like mad and would drive me nuts.

"More available" is a relative thing and it's mainly due to the hefty price and the more competition of the less expensive, recently redesigned models. The shortage is to a certain extent artificial dwelling on its undeniable history and the other part is true due to relatively limited production and high demand. Daytona has surely fallen as a victim of its own success in a way. I own SS one for the record.

SS Daytona
Visited 2 AD's in my neck of the woods both of which I've purchased from before. Didn't have them on display but both had them 'in the back' for me to try on.
One told me I can be on a list and the other offered it to me on the spot...picked this up a few days ago, brand new. |

Tourneau had a few used 16520s and a 116520 but they wanted astronomical prices...I've found their used selection is wayyy overpriced... After all this, I'm starting to think the daytona is a little small for my liking. Anyone think rolex would make a Daytona II? I think 42-44 mm would be perfect for this watch |
